Projection of PM2.5, BC, NOx and VOCs from the Future Vehicle Fleet: Impact of Alternative Vehicle Penetration Versus Continual Reductions in Emissions from Traditional Vehicles

January 2020 (has links)
abstract: Mobile sources emit a number of different gases including nitrogen oxides (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) as well as particulate matter (PM10, PM2.5). As a result, mobile sources are major contributors to urban air pollution and can be the dominant source of some local air pollution problems. In general, mobile sources are divided into two categories: on-road mobile sources and non-road mobile sources. In Maricopa County, the Maricopa County Air Quality Department prepares inventories of all local sources [11], [12]. These inventories report that for Maricopa County, on-road mobile sources emit about 23% of total PM2.5 annually, 58% of the total NOx, and 8% of the total VOCs. To understand how future changes how vehicles might impact local air quality, this work focuses on comparing current inventories of PM2.5, black carbon (BC), NOx, and VOCs to what may be expected emissions in future years based on different scenarios of penetration of hybrid gas-electric vehicles (HEV) and electric vehicles (EV) as well as continued reduction in emissions from conventional internal combustion (IC) vehicles. A range of scenarios has been developed as part of this thesis based on literature reports [6], [8], air quality improvement plan documentation [5], projected vehicle sales and registration [3], [4], as well as using EPA’s Motor Vehicle Emission Simulator (MOVES) [9]. Thus, these created scenarios can be used to evaluate what factors will make the most significant difference in improving local air quality through reduced emissions of PM2.5, BC, NOx and VOCs in the future. Specifically, the impact of a greater fraction of cleaner alternative vehicles such as hybrid-electric and electric vehicles will be compared to the impact of continual reductions in emissions from traditional internal combustion vehicles to reducing urban air pollution emissions in Maricopa County. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Civil, Environmental and Sustainable Engineering 2020

The effects of articulation on the perceived loudness of the projected voice

Myers, Brett Raymond 01 May 2013 (has links)
Actors often receive training to develop effective strategies for using the voice on stage. Arthur Lessac developed a training approach that concentrated on three energies: structural action, tonal action, and consonant action. Together, these energies help to create a more resonant voice, which is characterized by a fuller sound that carries well over noise and distance. In Lessac-Based Resonant Voice Therapy, voice clinicians help clients achieve a resonant voice through structural posturing and awareness of tonal changes. However, LBRVT does not include the third component of Lessac's approach: consonant action. This study examines the effect that increased consonant energy has on the speaking voice--particularly regarding loudness. Audio samples were collected from eight actor participants who read a monologue using three distinct styles: normal articulation, poor articulation (elicited using a bite block), and over-articulation (elicited using a Lessac-based training intervention). Participants learned about the "consonant orchestra," practiced producing each sound in a consonant cluster word list, and practiced linking the consonants in short phrases. Twenty graduate students of speech-language pathology listened to speech samples from the different conditions, and made comparative judgments regarding articulation, loudness, and projection. Group results showed that the over-articulation condition was selected as having the greatest articulation, loudness, and projection in comparison to the other conditions, although vocal intensity (dB SPL) was not statistically different. These findings indicate that articulation treatment may be beneficial for increasing perceived vocal loudness.

Numerical simulations of the Dynamic Beam Equation in discontinuous media

Wik, Niklas, Niemelä, David, Wagner Zethrin, Valter January 2020 (has links)
The study examines the Projection method and the simultaneousapproximation-term (SAT) method as boundary treatment for the dynamic beam equation using summation-by-parts (SBP) operators for handling the inner domain. The methods are examined for both the homogeneous constant coefficient case, and the inhomogeneous piecewise constant coefficient case with a coupled interface. The outer boundaries are handled by SAT or Projection, the coupled interfaced is handled by Projection or a mix between Projection and SAT. Solutions are integrated in time with finite central difference schemes and compared to analytical solutions. A convergence study is conducted with respect to the spatial discretization to measure the accuracy, and the stability is examined by numerical simulations of the CFL-condition. The study shows that Projection has the same accuracy as SAT for most boundary conditions while allowing for a larger timestep. A discontinuity in the medium is found to be handled equally accurate by Projection and the Projection and SAT mixture for all but one case studied, where the mixture was slightly more accurate.

Parallelizing Map Projection of Raster Data on Multi-core CPU and GPU Parallel Programming Frameworks / Parallellisering av kartprojektion av rasterdata på flerkärniga CPU- och  GPU-programmeringsramverk

Chavez, Daniel January 2016 (has links)
Map projections lie at the core of geographic information systems and numerous projections are used today. The reprojection between different map projections is recurring in a geographic information system and it can be parallelized with multi-core CPUs and GPUs. This thesis implements a parallel analytic reprojection algorithm of raster data in C/C++ with the parallel programming frameworks Pthreads, C++11 STL threads, OpenMP, Intel TBB, CUDA and OpenCL. The thesis compares the execution times from the different implementations on small, medium and large raster data sets, where OpenMP had the best speedup of 6, 6.2 and 5.5, respectively. Meanwhile, the GPU implementations were 293 % faster than the fastest CPU implementations, where profiling shows that the CPU implementations spend most time on trigonometry functions. The results show that reprojection algorithm is well suited for the GPU, while OpenMP and Intel TBB are the fastest of the CPU frameworks.

Hudební komunikace, projekce a analogie v muzikoterapeutické praxi u dětí se zdravotním postižením / Music Communication, Projection and Analogy of Handicapped Children in Music Therapy

Lipský, Matěj January 2014 (has links)
/Abstract Music Communication, Projection and Analogy of Handicapped Children in Music Therapy Presented work takes an interest in music contents produced by handicapped children attending music therapy sessions. The contents of music were gained from the children by the method of improvisation, particularly by "concert technique". In the theoretical part we present philosophical background for the music therapy in a field of special education and research. This background thought we have found in a gnoseology of a critical realism and a radical constructivism. Afterwards the definition and description of used music therapy terminology follows. We present three music therapy models that put great emphasis on the contents of music produced by clients. These models are: the German Morphological music therapy, the Dutch Analogical Music Therapy and the Geneape music therapy model from the Czech Republic. We also discuss general possibilities of using music therapy while working with mentally handicapped clients, autistic clients and clients suffering from sight defects, because these kinds of handicaps are included in our research group. At the end of the theoretical part we explain the terms of music communication, projection and music analogy. They are always connected to the contents of music, as...

Labor Force Projections for the State of Utah, 1970-2000

Lundahl, Craig R. 01 May 1973 (has links)
This study deals with labor force projections for the State of Utah, counties and multi-county areas, by age and sex for the years 1980, 1990, and 2000, using the technique of cohort analysis for long-range labor force projections. The study also examines some social and economic implications of labor force projections for Utah. The labor force projections were derived from the age and sex population projections being prepared for the State of Utah and Utah counties by Yun Kim and Therel R. Black, Utah State University. In order to project the future labor force of Utah, an analysis of historic and prospective trends of labor force participation rates affecting various age and sex categories for Utah, Utah counties and multi-county areas between 1960 and 1970 was conducted. Since the trends in labor force participation by age and sex of the United States and Utah in 1960 and 1970 so closely paralleled, it was decided to project the future participation rates for Utah to 2000 based on the projected participation rates for the United States made by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Using the year 1970 as the base period of projection, relative ratios calculated between the United States and Utah's labor force participation rates by age and sex in 1970 made possible the estimation of Utah's projected labor force in 1980 by taking the ratios times the United States projected 1980 participation rates. Similarly, using the ratios between the counties and multi-county areas' projected participation rates in 1980 by multiplying the newly calculated ratios with the State of Utah's projected 1980 labor force participation rates. Then the labor force participation rates were applied to the projected 1980 population figures for the counties, multi-county areas, and the state, by age-sex categories to arrive at the projected labor force for 1980. The same procedure was repeated to obtain the projected labor force in 1990 and 2000. Several basic assumptions were made concerning the labor force projections for Utah: (1) the trends in the relative differences of the labor force participation rates between the state and counties will continue as observed in 1970; (2) the unemployment rates for the State of Utah will average around 5.5 percent of the labor force; (3) the economic activity and development in Utah will continue at levels comparable to those found in 1970, avoiding any major recessions; (4) the direction of the past trend in labor force participation rates of the various age-sex groups in the United States and Utah will continue; (5) the Bureau of Labor Statistics' projected labor force participation rates for the United States in 1985 will remain basically the same in 1990, and (6) the trends in the projected labor force participation rates for the United states between 1980 and 1990 will continue to the year 2000. The calculations of the labor force showed that, throughout the projection period of 1970 to 2000, the size of the total labor force of Utah increased by j361,242 workers or 89.2 percent as compared to the 1970 level of 404,798 workers. This represented an increase of 97,920 workers from 1970 to 1980, 100,823 workers from 1980 to 1990; and 162,499 workers from 1990 to 2000. From 1970 to the year 2000 the working age population increased by an estimated 590,036. The projected labor force in the decade from 1970 to 1980 showed a dramatic increase in growth for both males and females: 34,727 workers for the age class of 25 to 34 years. Increases in the projected labor force were observed for all other age groups, except for males and females aged 16 to 17 years. The overall participation rates for those 16 years and over in the state declined for both males and females, although the state had labor force increases over the previous decade of about 25 percent for males and 22 percent for females. Projected labor force growth between 1980 and 1990 was slower than during the previous decade and was more concentrated in a few age groups. The Slowdown was due to the declines in the number of births in the 1960's. The age category of 25 to 34 years experienced heavy growth, and the combined age categories of 25 to 34 years and 35 to 44 years included over half of all workers in the state. Most of the remaining workers were concentrated in the age group 45 to 64 years, The state experienced smaller increases in projected labor force growth, 20 percent for both males and females, Similar trends were evident for the counties and multi-county areas. Throughout the entire projection period, expected trends portrayed in labor force participation rates were the declining participation of younger males because of schooling and of older males because of earlier retirement, The most dramatic trend for females was the continuing movement of married women into paid employment, Generally, the participation rates showed stabilizing trends for males, while females showed increasing rates from 1970 through 2000. A further need exists for projections of Utah's labor force using additional information and industrial and occupational categories.
