Understanding Hard Interaction in QCD and the Search for the Gluon Spin Contribution to the Spin of the Proton

In the following discourse unpolarized cross sections and double helicity asymmetries of single inclusive positive and negative charged hadrons at mid-rapidity from p + p collisions at p s = 62:4 GeV are presented. Measurements for the transverse momentum range 1:0 < pT < 4:5 GeV/c are done with PHENIX detector at Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC) and are consistent with calculations based on perturbative quantum chromodynamics (pQCD) at next-to-leading order (NLO) in the strong coupling constant, s. Resummed pQCD calculations including terms with next-to-leading log (NLL) accuracy, yielding reduced theoretical uncertainties, also agree with the data. The double helicity asymmetry, sensitive at leading order to the gluon polarization in a momentum fraction range of 0:05

<p> The following thesis comprises the study of six resonances in the Na^23(p,γ)Mg^24 reaction, using a 40 cu. cm. Ge(Li) detector. These resonances are at proton energies, Ep = 512 Kev, 987 Kev, 1020 Kev, 1174 Kev, 1318 Kev and 1416 Kev. The decay scheme and branching ratios have been found for each of these resonances. Also the gamma transition widths have been found for all of these resonances, except the 1416 Kev resonance, and these transition widths have been employed in calculating the reduced gamma transition strengths for the above decays.</p> / Thesis / Master of Science (MSc)

The Extraction of the Spin Structure Function, G2 (And G1) at Low Bjorken X

The Spin Asymmetries of the Nucleon Experiment (SANE) used the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility at Jefferson Laboratory in Newport News, VA to investigate the spin structure of the proton. The experiment measured inclusive double polarization electron asymmetries using a polarized electron beam, scattered off a solid polarized ammonia target with target polarization aligned longitudinal and near transverse to the electron beam, allowing the extraction of the spin asymmetries A1 and A2, and spin structure functions g1 and g2. Polarized electrons of energies of 4.7 and 5.9 GeV were used. The scattered electrons were detected by a novel, non-magnetic array of detectors observing a four-momentum transfer range of 2.5 to 6.5 GeV*V. This document addresses the extraction of the spin asymmetries and spin structure functions, with a focus on spin structure function, g2 (and g1) at low Bjorken x. The spin structure functions were measured as a function of x and W in four Q square bins. A full understanding of the low x region is necessary to get clean results for SANE and extend our understanding of the kinematic region at low x.

In this thesis a production of J/ψ meson in pp and heavy-ion collisions was investigated. A comparison between Monte Carlo generator and data by ATLAS experiment at CERN was done. PYTHIA version 8.2 was chosen for the Monte Carlo generator. In the first part, comparisons of several configurations of PYTHIA were used to establish the best matching of the Monte Carlo to the data using collisions with centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. Choice of parton distribution functions was found not to be important, while presence or absence of initial and final state radiation were proven to have an important impact on the result. In the second part, correlation of J/ψ meson and the jet production was quantified. Anti-kt algorithm with R = 0.4 was used to reconstruct jets. Pairs of muons were used to identify J/ψ meson candidates. Only less than 10% of J/ψ mesons were found to be associated with jets. 1

The correlation between the carbon-proton and proton-proton coupling constants have been studied in various 13 systems. Isocrotonic acid-carboxyl-3C, crotonic acid- 13 13 carboxyl-3C, and 5-norbornene-2-carboxylic acid-carboxyl-3C- 1,5,6,7,7-hexachloro were synthesized and their carbonproton coupling constants were analyzed. Nmr studies showed the magnitudes of the carbon-proton coupling constants to correlate well with analogous protonproton coupling constants, although the values of the couplings were larger than expected. The geminal olefinic couplings were considerably larger than all other couplings, but they were self-consistent. The signs of the carbon-proton coupling constants also were in agreement without exception with the signs of analogous proton-proton coupling constants.

Solid-state NMR Studies of Ion Dynamics in Proton-Conducting Polymers and Composites

High resolution solid state 1H NMR is used to investigate proton mobility of Nafion, Sulfonated Polyether Ether Ketones(S-PEEK) and their composites, which provides better understanding of their proton conductivities. Proton exchange between sulfonic acid groups and water was observed in these materials. The proton mobility is dependent on both the temperature and the water content. Variable temperature experiments were used to determine the activation energy for proton transportation which generally increases with decrease in hydration level. The preparation of Nafion/SiO2 composites can cause large difference in proton diffusion coefficients and proton conductivities in dried states. This indicates that the amount of dopants needs to be optimized to minimize the blocking of proton diffusion pathways by dopant particles. Detailed information on the control of surface hydroxyl groups in Nafion/SiO2 is obtained through the combination of 29Si and 1H NMR. Although hydrated Nafion/ZrP composites show reduced proton activation energy, they present lower proton conductivity at 35°C than unmodified Nafion. For composites dried at 160°C, both the conversion of monohydrogen phosphate into pyrophosphate and the protonation of monohydrogen phosphate have been observed, which could be one of reasons for the decreased proton conductivity after rehydration. Under high humidification, a single or multiple sulfonic acid proton environments was observed in S-PEEKs, which explains the small proton conductivity difference between some of S-PEEKs. However, the observed conductivity difference for S-PEEKs cast from different solvents was attributed to distinct mobilities of polymer chains. In the crosslinked S-PEEK, not all the crosslinkers of ethylene glycol are fully crosslinked. Proton exchange between residual sulfonic acid and hydroxyls of the crosslinker was observed, which is the primary reason that the crosslinked S-PEEK, with very low residual degree of sulfonation (13 %), still shows proton conductivity comparable to those of S-PEEKs. / Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
