Life History and Psychometric Personality Factors Differentiating Prisoners Convicted of Violent and Nonviolent CrimesReuterfors, David Lawrence 12 1900 (has links)
In this study violent and nonviolent prisoners were differentiated on the basis of life history and psychometric variables. Life history data were collected from institutional files and from a biographical questionnaire. Psychometric procedures consisted of the Mini-Mult Prisoner Questionnaire and the Bender-Gestalt. In summary, the variables included in the discriminant function suggest that the violent subjects were more psychopathological than the nonviolent subjects. The violent subjects evidenced behavioral problems at a young age in appropriately expressing anger. They appeared to have limited behavioral repertoires in attaining their desires outside the immediate gratification through aggressive means. They were also more emotionally alienated and less socially skilled. The violent subjects received more negative feedback
during childhood and were incarcerated at a younger age, They were more overtly hostile and also more lacking in cognitive ego mastery. In contrast, the nonviolent subjects apparently learned during childhood to repress their anger to a greater extent. They also seemed to modulate their anger by withdrawing from direct interpersonal conflict.

Psigoterapeutiese hantering van perfeksionisme / Psychotherapeutic handling of perfectionismVan Vuuren, Elmarie Janse 01 January 2002 (has links)
Text in Afrikaans / The purpose of this study was to determine the nature, origin and negative consequences of perfectionism and to set guidelines for the therapeutic handling of perfectionism.
Two literature studies were done to investigate the phenomenon and therapeutic techniques with regards to perfectionsim. A questionnaire was developed as aid to the therapist to identify negative perfectionism and associated problem areas. An empirical study was done to investigate the effectivity of the questionnaire and to compose a program and guidelines for the therapist and perfectionist.
Results of the study indicated that negative perfectionism resulted in affective, cognitive, interpersonal and behavioural consequences for the client. It further showed that it is necessary to find the origin of the client's perfectionism and to give them insight in their problem to enable the therapist to succesfully apply cognitive behavioral therapy. / The sickle cell anemia is a chronic, serious illness, considered to be the most common hereditary monogenic disease in Brazil. This disease, which is characterized by a structural alteration on the beta globin chain that leads to production of an abnormal hemoglobin (HbS), may induce in its bearers several health conditions: sickle cell crisis, infections, pulmonary hypertension, cardiovascular and kidney diseases, and many others. The brain may also be affected: strokes, silent cerebral infarcts and ischemic lesions are some of the possibly associated conditions, that may produce deficits on the development of the cognitive functions and decline in academic performances. As sickle cell anemia originated in Africa, it is more prevalent among people of African ancestry - a population which, historically, constitutes one of the most socially and economically vulnerable strata of the Brazilian society. Considering that every illness, its course and treatment exposes social relations and life conditions in a certain society; and that the expression of any disease relies not only on biological but also on psychological, economical and social factors, we deem as necessary to understand how the sickle cell anemia - for a long time subdiagnosed e little investigated - expresses itself in the contemporary society and on the lives of the patients. Adopting the psychological development as the category of study, within a dialectical and materialistic approach on the Socialhistorical Psychology; the life history method and the semi-structured interview for data collection, our goal was to investigate the most proeminent aspects of the psychological development process on sickle cell anemia patients, and their relationship with that illness. The results point to an expressive subjection of part of this population to conditions, situations and determiners that interfere and may cause important limitations not only to their psychological ...

A dor como metáfora da unidade: o diálogo analítico entre o corpo e a psique / The pain as metaphor of the unit: the analytical dialogue between the body and psiqueMarcos Creder de Souza Leão 12 April 2002 (has links)
This work reflects a theoretical study about pain as a subject, emphasizing its conceptual aspect, not only the historical-philosophical point of view, but also the medical, psychopathological and especially psychoanalytical point of view. As pain intersects various discussions, without an epistemological defined field, it is proposed as a hypothesis, to define exactly in this transdiciplinary convergency: pain as a unique concept in the psychophysical interface that has as Modern dualist way of counterpart thinking. The psychoanalysis highly contributes to interrupting this parallelism. Going through the Freudian theory from the manuscripts to the studies of hysterical suffering, current neurosis, theory of pulsions, that gradually create significant variables which tend to maintain the pain exactly in the border of the real and symbolical body, of the representable and irrepresentable; between the life and death pulsions and between pleasure and displeasure. This hyphotesis is illustrated with fragments of cases related by physicians. It is questioned part of the psychosomatic psychoanalytical thought that maintains an asymmetric relationship between body and psyche by complex theorizing, which privilege the pain in psycho determinism, counteracting what is done by the medicine, paradoxically, with the anatomic body. The pain will not be in the duality of the subject, but as a metaphor of the unity
