Bibliographia Historica Byzantina : a historical and bibliographical description of the early editions of the Corpus Historiæ Byzantinæ (1556-1645)

Della Rocca de Candal, Geri January 2016 (has links)
This thesis is concerned with the editorial, printing and marketing history of four Byzantine historical narratives, published between 1556 and 1645, and soon collectively identified under the name Corpus Historiæ Byzantinæ (hereinafter, 'Byzantine Corpus'). The four Byzantine historians - Ioannes Zonaras, Niketas Choniates, Nikephoros Gregoras and Laonikos Chalkokondyles - enjoyed considerable popularity in early modern Europe, with a peak of interest in the second half of the sixteenth century. This thesis aims at highlighting how these four texts, despite being so popular in a number of early modern European countries (particularly in the German-speaking area, in Italy and in France), did not do so for the same reasons: in fact, depending on the country in which these books were printed, they were marketed, perceived and read in very different ways. This element is particularly relevant in light of the fact that the Byzantine Corpus represents the earliest predecessor of the Corpus Fontium Historiæ Byzantinæ, the modern resource for the study of Byzantine historical sources. Chapter 1 analyses the early formation of the Byzantine Corpus and, in particular, the figure of Hieronymus Wolf, first editor of the Byzantine Corpus, often considered the 'father' of Byzantine studies; his relation with his patrons, the Fuggers of Augsburg; finally, his relation with his publisher, the Basel printer Johannes Oporinus. It then provides contextualised bibliographical and paratextual descriptions of the editiones principes of the Byzantine Corpus, all printed in Basel. Chapters 2-5 reflect the same comparative approach, used to investigate how the later editions of the Byzantine Corpus were prepared and marketed in different European countries: each chapter provides a bibliographical and paratextual analysis of the subsequent German, Italian, French and Genevan editions respectively. The Conclusions draw together all the information collected in the previous chapters and investigate three pivotal aspects of the Byzantine Corpus: i) the formation of the Byzantine Corpus and the individual popularity of each of the four Byzantine historians based on the frequency and popularity of both individual and collective editions; ii) the distinctive reasons of their popularity, analysed through a comparison of the different approaches with which editors and publishers have presented these texts to their respective audiences in Germany, Italy and France; iii) the reasons for the rise and decline in popularity of the Byzantine Corpus in the early seventeenth century.

Unlikely readers : negotiating the book in colonial South Asia, c.1857-1914

Mukhopadhyay, Priyasha January 2015 (has links)
This thesis constructs a history of reading for South Asia (1857-1914) through an examination of the eccentric relationships that marginal colonial agents and subjects - soldiers, peasants, office clerks and women - developed with everyday forms of writing. Drawing on the methodologies of the history of the book, and literary and cultural histories, it creates a counterpoint to the dominant view of imperial self-fashioning as built on reading intensively and at length. Instead, it contends that the formation of identities in colonial South Asia, whether compliant or dissenting, was predicated on superficial forms of textual engagement, leaving the documents of empire most likely misread, unread, or simply read in part. I illustrate this argument through four chapters, each of which brings together extensive archival material and nonliterary texts, as well as both canonical and little-known literary works. The first two discuss the circulation of unread texts in colonial institutions: the army and the government office. I study Garnet Wolseley's pioneering war manual, The Soldier's Pocket-book for Field Service, a book that soldiers refused to read. This is juxtaposed, in the second study, with an examination of the reception of the bureaucratic document in illiterate peasant communities, explored through the colonial archive and ethnographic novels. In the third and fourth chapters, I focus on texts consumed in part. I turn to the Bengali Hindu almanac, a form that made the transition from manuscript to print in this period, and examine how it trained its new-found readership of English-educated office clerks to oscillate smoothly between British-bureaucratic and local forms of time, as well as to read quickly and selectively. I end with a study of The Indian Ladies' Magazine, and suggest that the cosmopolitan form of the periodical and editorial practices of extracting and summarising gave women unprecedented access to a network of global print.

Lyon publishing in the age of Catholic revival, 1565-1600

Hall, Matthew January 2005 (has links)
This PhD dissertation focuses upon the role of Lyon's printing industry in the revival of Catholicism in the second half of the sixteenth century. Lyon was one of Europe's premier cities; booming trade and tolerant attitudes had been catalysts for its growth. It possessed one of the finest and most renowned printing industries on the continent. Reputations were turned upside down by the development of evangelical activism in the 1560s. By the late 1560s the city was once more firmly placed in the Roman Catholic camp. Lyon's presses joined in the newly found Catholic sentiment. Presses produced a vast range of texts necessary for the reconstruction of the Church. From the start, the commerce of the book and the fate of Catholic revival were closely bound together. Within a decade of the fall of the Protestant regime, Catholic authors and publishers produced steady streams of violent pamphlet literature aimed towards the eradication of the Huguenot. With a powerful combination of theological tomes and a flood of book and pamphlet literature addressed to a wider audience, Lyon's printing presses held an important role in the progress of Catholic revival. Chapter one sketches core aspects of the history of the printing industry in Lyon from its inception in the 1470s until 1600. Chapter two concentrates on the production of pamphlet literature between 1565 and 1588, the years of Catholic victory and the period leading up to the radical developments of the Holy Catholic League. Chapter three extends the survey of the period 1565 until 1588 by addressing the body of larger religious books published. Chapters four and five explore the role of pamphlet literature during Lyon's adherence to the Leaguer, and then Royalist movement. Chapter six examines the production of larger religious books throughout the years 1589 until 1600. This study of Lyon's place in print culture demonstrates that our preconceptions of the book culture - seen through the predominantly German model - cannot be accurately imposed across European printing centres. Contrary to the German experience print culture and the Counter-Reformation were inextricably linked. Moreover, French Catholic authors were prepared to confront the evangelical movement in the medium of print. By doing so Catholic authors and publishers fully utilised the weapons that had brought Protestantism so much success, making them their own.

Oliveira, Danusa Almeida de January 2013 (has links)
The Research maps impressions and actions of Gaucho editors about the introduction of technologies and digital networks in the publishing market aiming to identify and discuss aspects that indicate changes in the structure, practice and processes associated with the editing of books. Literatura e educação na memória de uma cidade: um olhar sobre Thales Castanho de Andrade / Literature and education in the memory of a city: a point of a view about Thales Castanho de Andrade

Fernando Luiz Alexandre 17 April 2007 (has links)
This research is circumscribed to the brazilian education history. Its aim is to study the educator and writer of infantile literature Thales Castanho de Andrade (1890-1977). It deals with elements related to the author, his literary works, and mastery seen under the perspective of analyzing the main aspects which involved his trajectory since his formative period in the 1910 decade, the divulging of his best known book Saudade, published in 1919, till the late years of the 30 decade, when a slackening of his work is noticed. So, to begin with, we firstly located Piracicaba City, his background place, and detected some topics of the teaching establishments to which he was related such as the \"Grupo Escolar\", \"Escola Complementar\" and \"Escola Prática Agrícola de Piracicaba\". The \"Primeiro Congresso de Ensino Agrícola\" (First Congress of Agricultural Teaching), which happened in 1911 in São Paulo City is also one the themes dealt with. As a theoretical basis, we have aggregated to the analysis the propositions by Nicolau Sevcenko and Angela de Castro Gomes, who, on working about the history of intellectuals examined the literary and the press materials to analyze thinking and the historical context. They used the theoretical instruments of social history, the same option of this research. The notions of \"sociability net\" (rede de sociabilidade) and \"microclimates\" (microclimas) which Angela de Castro Gomes refers to are mentioned in this work to explain the arising of \"Bloomsbury caipira\" (countryman Bloomsbury), a local gathering together of artists and intellectuals in which Thales de Andrade took place, contributed to his entering the literary and educational fields in the 20 and 30 decades. The context of the literary production and the presentation of the published works are also subjects approached. We also inquired about the discussion on literature concept by the author, as well as about the comparison of his works with Monteiro Lobato\'s. Finally we searched about the aspects referring to the building of the author\'s profiles by the \"Piracicaba\" press. The material chosen for this research is a clipping collection of \"Biblioteca Municipal de Piracicaba\". We can present as a result and conclusion of the research, the examination of the literary production in the education field. This way the analysis is expected to answer to what extent his books were elaborated and put at the disposal of education. It is necessary, however, to take on account that the author, on doing his literary works, had as his landmark the reality of rural life as the chief purpose of his works, becoming so, a reference to ruralism. Meanwhile, searching for ideal, Thales identified himself, with the tendencies of the developing education of the time, so linking his literary project to the educational on which looked at the modernization of public education in the context of rural environment. In this sense, it is possible to get from the \"andradeana\" production a certain degree of approach between his literature and proposals by the education movements in the 20 an 30 decades.
