O foco desta tese centra-se na investigação do cenário editorial da Serra Gaúcha/RS/Brasil. Ao compreender a literatura como um sistema que se forma a partir de uma ampla e complexa rede de relações, tem-se como objetivo mapear e analisar os mecanismos de produção, publicação e circulação literária na região, sob o ponto de vista de seus escritores e editores. Inicialmente, parte-se de uma ampla pesquisa sobre escritores e obras que compõem a paisagem literária serrana do ano 2000 até 2016, com o propósito de estruturar o panorama de publicações e de produtores de ficção na região. Em seguida, realizam-se entrevistas pessoais com 25 escritores e 4 editores, com o intuito de verificar como eles percebem sua atuação no sistema literário em questão. Finalmente, as entrevistas são tabuladas e analisadas à luz da sociologia da literatura. Fatores sociais, históricos e culturais específicos da região, assim como as condições de produção, difusão, leitura e público literário, compõem os elementos investigativos desta pesquisa e colaboram para que se compreenda a vida literária na Serra Gaúcha, na atualidade. / This thesis focuses on the investigation of the editorial scenario of the Serra Gaúcha/RS/Brazil. Understanding literature as a system that is formed from a wide and complex network of relations, the objective is to map and analyze the literary mechanisms of production and publication in the region, from the perspective of its writers and editors. Initially, it is based on an extensive research on writers and works that compose the literary scenery from 2000 to 2016, with the purpose of structuring the panorama of publications and fiction producers in the region. Then personal interviews with 25 writers and 4 editors are carried out, in order to verify how they perceive their work in the literary system under discussion. Finally, the interviews are tabulated and analyzed according to the sociology of literature. Particular social, historical and cultural factors of the region, as well as the conditions of production, diffusion, reading and literary public, compose the investigative elements of this research and collaborate to understand the literary life in Serra Gaúcha, at the present time.

Monteiro Lobato é visto como editor revolucionário, entre outros motivos, por ter criado uma rede nacional de distribuição de livros e por pagar generosamente direitos autorais. Esse trabalho examina, por meio de documentos inéditos relativos às editoras, de que maneira Lobato utilizou práticas editoriais já existentes em seu tempo, reformulando-as ou adaptando-as para cumprir as metas de suas empresas. Para tanto, investiga a formação de autores e editores brasileiros, do início do oitocentos até o início do século XX, enfocando as diferentes características atribuídas às figuras de autor e de editor ao longo do tempo. A tese também advoga que intelectuais tiveram papel fundamental na criação e na manutenção da rede nacional de distribuição de livros administrada por Lobato. Finalmente, contratos de edição, desconhecidos até o momento, são transcritos e analisados com o objetivo de fornecer informações e hipóteses inovadoras a respeito do pagamento de direitos autorais pelas empresas do editor. / Abstract: This thesis brings new perspectives on Monteiro Lobato?s publishing activities between 1918 and 1925, the period when he was at the head of publishing enterprises widely considered as revolutionary in Brazil?s history of book. Monteiro Lobato is regarded as a revolutionary publisher, among other reasons, for establishing a nationwide book distribution network and for paying high copyright rates. This thesis presents recently discovered documents regarding these publishing companies, and through this material analyzes in which way Lobato took publishing practices that were already known and in use at his time, changing their shape or adapting them in order to suit his companies needs and goals. This thesis investigates the development of Brazilian author and publisher roles, from the early 1800s until the first decades of the 20th century, focusing on the different attributes each author or publisher adopts as time evolves. This thesis also sustains that intellectuals played a fundamental role on birth and development of Lobato's nationwide book distribution network. Thesis firstly acquaints the reader with present situation on the market of printed and electronic publications. Then is looking at appointed area with SLEPTE analysis used in strategic management. O corpus é constituído por três obras publicadas pela Editora Cosac Naify, escritas e ilustradas pelo referido autor: "A Princesinha Medrosa" (2ª edição, 2008), "Pedro e Lua" (2004) e "O Presente" (2010). A pesquisa se volta para as singularidades dos modos de criação e produção, a partir da análise das representações e concepções de criança, literatura e arte que concebem um determinado jogo circunscrito no polo da produção, por este autor e esta editora. Para tanto, levantamos as seguintes interrogações: no caso da literatura infantil, como as representações do leitor infantil são sugeridas no momento da criação das obras pelos autores? Como é o jogo, no polo da produção, quando pensamos neste autor e nesta editora? Como este jogo questiona (ou não) o jogo habitual ancorado em uma sociedade de mercado e de consumo? Para buscarmos respostas, tomamos como fontes documentais entrevistas com o autor, com Isabel Lopes Coelho, editora do catálogo de literatura infantojuvenil da Cosac Naify, e com Maria Carolina Sampaio de Araújo, designer. Nessa direção, o trabalho tem seu procedimento metodológico ancorado nas entrevistas realizadas, nas análises dos livros selecionados e em buscas realizadas em bancos de pesquisa sobre teses e dissertações a respeito do tema "literatura infantil". Contribuições teóricas advindas da História Cultural (Chartier, 1990 e 2001) nos mostram que ao tomarmos os sujeitos envolvidos nesses processos como fontes e objetos de nossa investigação adentramos no campo das representações próprias de um tempo ou de um espaço. Ao pensarmos com a liberdade (sempre condicionada) de cada sujeito, Certeau (2007) nos oferece contribuições sobre os modos de pesquisar, bem como um aprofundamento nas discussões acerca das estratégias de quem detém o poder (a editora). Em Ginzburg (1989, 2006), teremos contribuições para o estudo de um caso particular (um autor, uma editora), que pode ser representativo de um determinado tempo histórico. Com Norbert Elias (2001), teremos contribuições trazidas pela Sociologia a estudarmos não um autor e uma editora em particular, mas a função deste autor e desta editora não na ação de fabricar um livro, mas na constituição de uma rede ou um jogo no qual eles estão inscritos. Já Scott e Nikolajeva (2011), Hunt (2010) e Linden (2011) trazem contribuições ao panorama atual da literatura infantil. Arroyo (1988), Coelho (2010), Lajolo e Zilberman (2007) situam esta pesquisa no tempo e espaço, a partir de um panorama histórico. / Abstract: This report has the purpose of knowing the creation process and production of infantile literature books, through the author and illustrator Odilon Moraes' view. The corpus is composed by three works published by Cosac Naify Publish House, written and illustrated by the cited author: "A Princesinha Medrosa" (2nd edition, 2008), "Pedro e Lua" (2004) and "O Presente" (2010). The research turns to the singularity of the ways of creation and production, through the analysis of child's representations and conceptions, literature and art which conceive a certain circumscribed game in the production pole, by this author and this publish house. To get these conclusions, it was raised the following questions: in the case of infantile literature, how are the infantile reader's representations suggested in the moment of the work creation by the authors? How's the game in the production pole when we think of this author and this publish house? How does this game question (or not) the habitual game tied to a market and consumption society? To seek answers, we take as documentary source, the interviews with the author; with Isabel Lopes Coelho, editor of the children and teenager literature catalogue by Cosac Naify, and with Maria Carolina Sampaio de Araújo, designer. On this way, the report has its methodological procedure tied to the performed interviews, the analysis on the chosen books, the pursuit in many research sources about thesis and dissertations once elaborated on the theme ?infantile literature?. Some contributions that came from Culture History (Chartier, 1990 e 2001) show that if we take the people involved in these processes as sources and objects of our investigation, we enter the field of own representations of a time or of a space. Thinking with the freedom (always conditioned) of each person, Certeau (2007) offers us contributions about the ways of researching, as well as a deepening in the discussions about the strategies of whom detains the power (the publish house). In Ginzburg (1989, 2006), we have contributions for the study of a particular case (an author, a publish house), that may be representative of a certain historical time. With Norbert Elias (2001), we have contributions brought by Sociology when we study not an author and a publish house in particular, but the function of this author and this publish house not in the action of making a book, but in the constitution of a net or a game in which they are inscribed. Scott and Nikolajeva (2011), Hunt (2010), Linden (2011) bring contributions to current overview of infantile literature. Jana Kvašová 2011 Digital libraries of commercial publishers Abstract (in English): The aim of the thesis is to analyze and compare the current state of selected digital libraries of the most significant commercial publishers of scientific literature (SpringerLink, Wiley Online Library, ScienceDirect). The first chapter describes digital libraries in general and points out some of the specifics of digital libraries owned by commercial publishers. Basic terms like "digital library", "digital source", "digital document" are also explained in this chapter. The core of the thesis is represented by three analyses of selected digital libraries; Wiley Online Library (http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/), SpringerLink ( http://www.springerlink.com/) and SciVerse ScienceDirect (http://www.sciencedirect.com/). The following chapter describes the connecting of digital libraries using the CrossRef service. Book hunger and the political economy of the South African booktrade : structural and policy constraints on the production and distribution of academic books.

While 'book hunger' in Third World societies was regarded by a 'first generation' of theorists, working in the modernization/diffusion of innovation paradigm, as a cause of underdevelopment (and thus requiring the correction of problems relating to the undersupply of books to Third World countries by means of book aid policies, transfer of expertise and technology, and development of modern (western) publishing and distribution procedures and infrastructures), a 'second generation' of theorists working in the dependency/disassociation paradigm responded by insisting that 'book hunger' was an effect of the underdevelopment of peripheral economies, and a symptom of the debilitating cultural effects of the global economic order, with its skewed international distribution of knowledge, resources and capital. In recent approaches to the topic of 'book hunger' (which are wary of the sweeping dichotomies of dependency theory), 'book hunger' serves to describe a chronic shortage of books which results from complex structural inequities and antagonisms, from the distorting effects of global rationalization, as well as from local economic arrangements and policy mechanisms which do not adequately meet the knowledge and information needs of competing local cultural formations. 'Book hunger' is seen to derive from a range of causes, and to produce a range of effects, which correspond to the varying needs, resources, and conditions operative in - and the cultural media and knowledge infrastructures available within specific societies. Obviously, 'book hunger' is rooted to a considerable degree in the specific historical configurations and socioeconomic circumstances of specific countries. An understanding of complex, globally-interlinked socio-cultural, political and economic structures and practices is thus crucial to understanding 'book hunger' in South Africa. A survey of global and local environments within which scholarly books are produced and circulated - including South African distribution systems and knowledge dissemination networks - makes it possible to sketch an approach to South Africa's own 'book hunger:' which is sensitive to the complexity and the specificity of conditions in the local booktrade, and which is able to contribute to the complex debates on local knowledge infrastructures, strategies for book development and new forms of distribution which are now beginning to take place in South Africa. / Thesis (M.A.)-University of Natal, 1994.

Les éditeurs indépendants au Chili (2000-2005) : un développement contemporain des industries culturelles

Cette thèse porte sur l’émergence sur la scène chilienne d’un nouvel acteur dans la production du livre, acteur qui s’organise à la fin des années 1990 en se définissant lui-même en tant qu’éditeur indépendant et qui, au cours des premières années du XXIe siècle, élargit cette définition pour inclure le phénomène de l’édition autonome et le domaine de l’édition universitaire. Le point de ralliement de ces acteurs, organisés autour de l’association Editores de Chile, est la reprise et l’affirmation d’un rôle moderne des éditeurs de livres, au sens des Lumières. On peut constater l’articulation entre les revendications spécifiques du secteur et ses positions politiques sur la valeur symbolique de la production culturelle, sur son rôle en tant que facteur de construction identitaire et démocratique car l’accès aux livres ne peut pas être restreint par l’action sans contrepoids du marché. L’angle théorique que nous proposons est celui des théories des industries culturelles tout en intégrant aussi les contributions des études culturelles. En nous situant dans une perspective de l’économie politique des industries culturelles, nous chercherons à redéfinir le concept d’indépendance par le biais d’une analyse des stratégies d’unités économiques (les maisons d’édition) et des rapports entre ces unités et leurs contextes géographiques, politiques et culturels spécifiques. Nous tenons aussi en considération des éléments macrostructurels, mais en considérant que leur capacité d’influence est toujours relative et, en conséquence, doit faire l’objet d’une réévaluation en fonction des rapports de forces et des conjonctures politiques, économiques et sociales spécifiques. Nous pensons que l’indépendance n’est pas un phénomène qui n’est pas exclusif au monde de l’édition. Nous avons fait le constat qu’il existe aussi au sein des industries de l’enregistrement sonore, de l’audiovisuel et des médias comme la presse, la radio et, en moindre proportion, la télévision. En termes méthodologiques, nous proposons une approche qui combine des méthodes et des instruments quantitatifs et qualitatifs, c’est-à-dire, l’analyse des statistiques de l’édition au Chili (fréquences des titres, genres et auteurs), des entrevues semi-structurées et une analyse documentaire. Avant d’aborder la description et l’analyse de la production de livres au Chili et du sens que les éditeurs donnent à l’indépendance et à leurs prises de position dans le champ culturel, nous proposons une description historique et industrielle de l’édition du livre chilien. Cette description permet de comprendre la naissance et le développement du secteur en regard des processus politiques, économiques et sociaux du Chili et de l’Amérique latine, ainsi que sa situation actuelle en regard des nouvelles conditions politiques et économiques qui résultent du processus de globalisation et des transformations néolibérales locales et internationales. La recherche examine ensuite le caractère de la production de livres publiés au Chili entre les années 2000 et 2005 en considérant les titres produits, les auteurs et les genres. Cette analyse permet aussi d’établir des différences entre ces maisons d’édition et celles qui relèvent des grands conglomérats transnationaux de l’édition de livres. Cette analyse comparative nous permet d’établir de manière concluante des différences quant au nombre et á la diversité et l’intérêt culturel des livres publiés entre les éditeurs transnationaux et les éditeurs indépendants regroupés sous le nom de Editores de Chile. Cette analyse permet aussi d’établir des liens précis entre la production des éditeurs indépendants et leurs objectifs culturels et politiques explicites. Nous faisons ensuite état, par le biais de l’exposition et de l’analyse des entrevues réalisées avec les éditeurs, des trajectoires de ces organisations en tenant compte des périodes historiques spécifiques qui ont servi de contexte à leur création et à leur développement. Nous mettons ici en rapport ces trajectoires des éditeurs, les définitions de leurs missions et les stratégies mobilisées. Nous tenons aussi compte des dimensions internationales de ces définitions qui s’expriment dans leur participation au sein d’organisations internationales telle que l’Alliance internationale d’éditeurs indépendants (Gijón 2000 et Dakar 2003) et, spécifiquement, leur expression dans la coopération avec des maisons d’édition latino-américaines. Les entrevues et l’analyse documentaire nous permettent d‘entrevoir les tensions entre la politique culturelle de l’État chilien, en contraste avec des définitions, des objectifs et des actions politiques de Editores de Chile. Nous relions donc dans l’analyse, l’émergence de l’édition indépendante et les résistances qu’engendrent la globalisation des marchés culturels et les mouvements de concentration de la propriété, ainsi que les effets et réponses aux transformations néolibérales au plan des politiques culturelles publiques. Nous concluons alors à la nécessité d’une économie politique critique des industries culturelles qui puisse se pencher sur ces phénomènes et rendre compte non seulement de rapports entre conglomérats et indépendants et du développement des filières de la production culturelle, mais aussi du déploiement des logiques culturelles et politiques sous-jacentes, voire des projets historiques, qui se confrontent dans le champ des industries culturelles. / This thesis discusses the emergence of a new actor in the production of books in Chile. This actor arises in the late nineties as a group of independent publishers, and in the first few years of this decade, expands to include university publishing. The point of coincidence and action of these actors, organized in the association Editors of Chile, is the recuperation and assertion of a modern role for the figure of editor, in the sense of the Age of Enlightenment. We can confirm the articulation between the specific demands of publishers and the political position adopted on the symbolic value of cultural production and its role as an element of identity- and democracy-building, under the assumption that access to books should not be restricted to the rules of the market. The theoretical focus we suggest is that of the theory of cultural industries, including contributions from cultural studies. From the perspective of the political economy of cultural industries, we seek to redefine the concept of independence through an analysis of the strategies used by economic units (publishers) and the relationship between these units and their geographical, political and cultural context. We also take into account the macro-structural factors, but with the understanding that their influence is always relative and, in consequence, should be subject to re-evaluation in terms of the relationships of power and specific political, economic and social scenarios. We believe this is a phenomenon that is not exclusive to the field of books. We have corroborated that this also takes place in the field of music, audio-visual productions and the media, such as radio, and to a lesser extent, television. In terms of methodology, we suggest a mixed focus, one that combines quantitative and qualitative methods and instruments. These are the statistical analysis of the production of Chilean publishers (frequency of titles, genres and authors), semi-structured interviews and documents analysis. Before discussing the description and analysis of the production of books in Chile and the significance publishers give to independence along with their positions in the field of culture, we set forth a historical and industrial description of Chilean books. This description allows us to comprehend its creation and development in the political, economic and social context in Chile and Latin America, within the new conditions arising from the globalization process and local and international neoliberal transformations. This investigation then examines the nature of publishing in Chile from 2000-2005, taking into account titles, authors and genres. This analysis allows us to establish differences between organized independent publishers and the big transnational publishing houses. These differences are evident in terms of the number, diversity and cultural interest of the publications. In addition, this analysis allows us to establish specific ties between the production of Editors of Chile and the cultural and political objectives of their discourse. scenarios. These are the statistical analysis of the production of Chilean publishers (frequency of titles, genres and authors), semi-structured interviews and documents analysis. Before discussing the description and analysis of the production of books in Chile and the significance publishers give to independence along with their positions in the field of culture, we set forth a historical and industrial description of Chilean books. This description allows us to comprehend its creation and development in the political, economic and social context in Chile and Latin America, within the new conditions arising from the globalization process and local and international neoliberal transformations. This investigation then examines the nature of publishing in Chile from 2000-2005, taking into account titles, authors and genres. This analysis allows us to establish differences between organized independent publishers and the big transnational publishing houses. These differences are evident in terms of the number, diversity and cultural interest of the publications. In addition, this analysis allows us to establish specific ties between the production of Editors of Chile and the cultural and political objectives of their discourse. / La presente tesis aborda la emergencia en el escenario chileno de un nuevo actor en la producción del libro. Este actor se organiza a fines de los años 1990, definiéndose como independiente y, en el curso de los primeros años del siglo XXI, amplía esta definición para incluir los campos de la edición autónoma y universitaria. El punto de encuentro y de acción de estos actores, organizados en la asociación Editores de Chile, es la recuperación y afirmación de un rol moderno de la figura del editor, en el sentido de la ilustración. Podemos constatar la articulación entre las reivindicaciones específicas del sector y la toma de posiciones políticas acerca del valor simbólico de la producción cultural, sobre su rol como factor de construcción identitaria y democrática, bajo el supuesto que el acceso al libro no puede constreñirse por la acción sin contrapeso del mercado. El enfoque teórico propuesto es el de la teoría de las industrias culturales, integrando desde allí contribuciones de los estudios culturales. Al situarnos en una perspectiva de la economía política de las industrias culturales, buscamos redefinir el concepto de la independencia por medio de un análisis de las estrategias desplegadas por unidades económicas (las editoriales) y las relaciones entre estas unidades y su contexto geográfico, político y cultural. Tomamos también en consideración elementos macro estructurales, pero considerando siempre que su capacidad de influencia es siempre relativa y, en consecuencia, debe ser objeto de una reevaluación en función de las relaciones de fuerzas y las coyunturas políticas, económicas y sociales específicas. Pensamos que se trata de un fenómeno que no es exclusivo del campo de libro. Hemos constatado que este fenómeno se manifiesta también en el campo de los sectores de la música, del audiovisual y de los medios, como la prensa, la radio y, en menor proporción, la televisión. En términos metodológicos, proponemos un enfoque mixto, es decir que combina métodos e instrumentos cuantitativos y cualitativos. Estos son el análisis estadístico de la producción editorial chilena (frecuencias de títulos, géneros y autores), entrevistas semiestructuradas y un análisis documental. Antes de abordar la descripción y el análisis de la producción de libros en Chile y el sentido que los editores le dan a la independencia junto con sus tomas de posición en el campo cultural, proponemos una descripción histórica e industrial del libro chileno. Esta descripción permite comprender el nacimiento y desarrollo del sector en el contexto de procesos políticos, económicos y sociales en Chile y América Latina y situarlo en relación a las nuevas condiciones que resultan del proceso de globalización y de las transformaciones neoliberales locales e internacionales. La investigación examina luego el carácter de la producción de libros en Chile entre los años 2000 et 2005, considerando los títulos producidos, los autores y los géneros. Este análisis permite establecer diferencias entre los editores independientes organizados y los grandes conglomerados transnacionales. Estas diferencias son visibles en términos del número, de la diversidad y del interés cultural de las publicaciones. Asimismo, el análisis permite establecer lazos precisos entre la producción de Editores de Chile y los objetivos culturales y políticos expresados en sus discursos. Establecemos luego, mediante la exposición y el análisis de las entrevistas realizadas con 10 editores miembros de la organización, las trayectorias de las editoriales en relación a los contextos históricos de su creación y desarrollo. Relacionamos dichas trayectorias con las definiciones de su misión y las estrategias movilizadas. Tomamos también en cuenta las dimensiones internacionales de estas definiciones, que se expresan en su participación en el seno de organizaciones internacionales como la Alianza de Editores Independientes (Gijón 2000 et Dakar 2003) y, específicamente, la expresión de esta cooperación en iniciativas conjuntas con editoriales latino-americanas y una editorial basca. Las entrevistas y el análisis documental nos permiten observar las tensiones entre un tipo de política cultural de parte del Estado, en contraste con las definiciones, los objetivos y las acciones políticas de Editores de Chile. En el análisis, vinculamos la emergencia de la edición independiente y las resistencias que la globalización de los mercados culturales y los movimientos de concentración de la propiedad engendran, así como los efectos y las respuestas a las transformaciones neoliberales en el plano de las políticas culturales públicas. Concluimos con la necesidad de una economía política crítica de las industrias culturales capaz de observar estos fenómenos y dar cuenta no solamente de las relaciones entre grandes conglomerados y editores independientes en el desarrollo de las cadenas de la producción cultural, sino también del despliegue de lógicas culturales y políticas que subyacen bajo estas relaciones, incluso proyectos históricos que se confrontan en el campo de las industrias culturales.

One of the first Czech research papers on self-publishing. Even though unsuccessful and forbidden authors could publish a book on their own in the past, the current phenomenon of self-publishing can be arranged on-line in just a few clicks and for much cheaper. Self- publishing began to spread since circa 2005 - in the Czech Republic and abroad simultaneously. This thesis shows how the development has unfolded differently in the Czech Republic and in the USA, which is considered the cradle of this technology. The first chapter of this thesis analyzes the history of book publishing and many different ways to publish a book, and defines self-publishing. The second chapter shows how the new technologies and media influenced the expansion of self-publishing. The third chapter analyzes and puts into context some of the Czech and the American self-publishing portals, and compares the providers of these services. Many professionals - editors, authors, and literary critics - criticize self-publishing for its amateurism and low quality content, which this work takes into account as well. This paper also documents some of the rare cases of self-published authors, who managed to succeed despite the tough competition from traditional publishing houses.
