Strategic high performance business development : sustainable procurement

Aucamp, Abram Carel 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MComm)--Stellenbosch University, 2008. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The role of the traditional purchasing department has evolved significantly over the last decade into a competitive value adding procurement function within an organisation’s lean supply chain model. It has become a necessity to work with the suppliers to provide flexible, accurate, effective and cost effective goods and/or services (Barla, 2003; Ellram, 2002). In addition organisations are developing and utilising new business models geared towards improving both the balance sheet and the income statement to respond to external forces and new market opportunities. The change in business model places additional emphasis on leveraging increased innovation from suppliers, thus having a vast impact on supply management to such an extent that organisations are creating strategic relationships (Carter et al., 2007). In this paper, the supplier relationship management model will be studied under lean philosophy as to address the focal point – sustainable procurement. The paper will consist of three main areas: Supplier relationship management – Literature study Supplier relationship management – Case study Supplier relationship management – Operational tool Supplier relationship management – Literature study will address the theoretical methodologies, best practices, benefits and advantages, etc. Supplier relationship management – Case study will showcase a South African multi-national FMCG1 manufacturer’s methodology as well as the benefits of utilising a supplier relationship management approach to procurement. Supplier relationship management – Operational tool will be a practical tool developed for evaluating and facilitating supplier relationship management in an African context. The end result of the paper should be a feasible solution to prolonging the impact of procurement, thus increasing sustainability in the maturity stage of procurement’s life span in the typical product life cycle model (Canny Buyer, 2007). 1 Fast Moving Consumer Goods (“FMCG”) are products that have a quick turnover and relatively low cost (Wikipedia, 2007a).

Izar, Alberto Luiz Toffano. January 2015 (has links)
Abstract: The objective of this study is to investigate the level of influence of environmental training and empowerment of employees to adopt environmentally sustainable procurement in public universities in Brazil. For this, a theoretical grounding was held to discuss issues relating to existing legal instruments in Brazil for environmentally sustainable public procurement, environmental criteria that can be used in public procurement, the profile of those responsible for public procurement department, and identify drivers and barriers to the environmentally sustainable procurement. This theoretical grounding supported the develpment of an empirical research, which was collected from 52 procurement department, for further analysis and processing by using descriptive statistics and correlation. The result show: (a) the departments of the sample indicate that many practices/ initiative are being implemented to enable the sustainable procurement are receiving training and have autonomy to pursue sustainable procurement; (c) Environmental Laws has become more demanding, however, they are still very insufficient according to the view of those responsible for purchasing, unable to generate awareness in the population; (d) while the green supply chain management in the private sector is already showing good results, the public sector has shown incipient, highlighting a state with much difficulty creating synergy with its suppliers and consumers. The originality of this research is the fact, to date, has not been found similar research on environmental training, empowerment, external factors and adopting sustainable procurement practices in the Brazilian context. Both managers and stakeholders can learn from this work and plain strategies to assist the achievement of sustainable results / Mestre

Miljöanpassade inköp : Tre familjeägda företags drivkrafter, hinder och arbetssätt / Environmental purchasing : Three family owned companies forces, obstacles and workmethods

Björk, Sanna, Klang Schönborg, Rebecka January 2018 (has links)
The climate is changing and extreme weather are more common now than before, and as a reaction of that the environment has become more important to take in to consideration then before. The environment is spoken about on media every day and we are reminded to take care of it just as often. Companies have the most impact on the environment and therefore it is important that they care for it as well. The hardest struggle for companies is that they always search for economic growth but simultaneously should not harm the environment more than necessary, and in this matter the purchase function has a possibility to influence by purchase products that has been made in a more environmentally friendly way.  The aim of this study is to examine how companies works with environmental purchasing, which forces drives the environmental purchasing forward, what obstacles are there to slow down the development rate and what possible methods are there for the purchasing function to become more environmentally friendly. These questions are also our problem questions which will be answered in the end of this study. We chose to interview three family owned businesses in different sizes that all seemed in the steel industry so we could make a fair comparison between the companies and our theoretical framework and between themselves. We found some common denominator in forces and obstacles among the companies. We also found differences, one company wanted to become more environmentally friendly to show it up for customers – it’s an external force. Another force was to work with the company’s environmental goals – an internal force and which approach the companies used to purchase more environmentally friendly was highly dependent on company size.

Essai appliqué aux secteurs des infrastructures routières et ferroviaires / Is the French public private partnerships a tool to modernize public procurement ? The road and rail sectors experience

Joulain, Elise 11 October 2013 (has links)
Public private partnerships allows public and local authorities to entrust an conomic operator both with regard to the financing structures and equipment that their design, construction, operation or management of public services, failing to be owners and by paying the operator of milestone payments to be made during the term of the contract. Is this major analysis of this contractual structuring, particularly applied to rail and road sectors to conclude for the beginning of a modernization of law more precisely the contract for public purchasing ? This does not seem likely. In fact, depending on this aspect, it appears that public private partnerships, despite many hopes, has some difficulty in imposing like the cornerstone of the modernization of the law contract for public procurement. This revival has examined three fundamental aspects like procurement, financing and execution. This essay determined that if the public private partnership did not create a revolution, it nevertheless laid the foundation for modernization now underway, both in terms of funding and execution.

Consumption in the Age of Digital Plenty: Three Essays into an Emerging Phenomenon

January 2016 (has links)
abstract: The recent changes in the software markets gave users an unprecedented number of alternatives for any given task. In such a competitive environment, it is imperative to understand what drives user behavior. To that end, the research presented in this dissertation, tries to uncover the impact of business strategies often used in the software markets. The dissertation is organized into three distinct studies into user choice and post choice use of software. First using social judgment theory as foundation, zero price strategies effects on user choice is investigated, with respect to product features, consumer characteristics, and context effects. Second, role of social features in moderating network effects on user choice is studied. And finally, the role of social features on the effectiveness of add-on content strategy on continued user engagement is investigated. The findings of this dissertation highlight the alignments between popular business strategies and broad software context. The dissertation contributes to the litera- ture by uncovering hitherto overlooked complementarities between business strategy and product features: (1) zero price strategy enhances utilitarian features but not non-utilitarian features in software choice, (2) social features only enhance network externalities but not social influence in user choice, (3) social features enhance the effect of add-on content strategy in extending software engagement. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Business Administration 2016

Food Purchasing Behavior: Choice, Change, Challenge

January 2013 (has links)
abstract: This study was designed to influence consumer habits, specifically those relating to purchases of fruits, vegetables, and junk food. Previous studies have clearly shown the ineffectiveness of simply describing the health benefits of eating more fruits and vegetables (F/V). In contrast, this study aimed to change the result by changing the message: providing participants with insight into the hidden agendas of food companies and grocery stores, provide useful tips on how to include children when selecting F/V, and emphasizing the importance of parental modeling in regard to food purchases. Participants of this study were separated into two groups, the tour group and the education group. The tour group was guided through a grocery store where they learned about sales tactics and manipulations used by grocery stores and food companies to influence purchases. Education group participants were provided with an education session focusing on USDA and FDA handouts displaying current educational suggestions for increasing F/V consumption. Grocery store receipts were collected and analyzed to track the progress of both groups. The goal of the study was to identify a method of informing consumers that will produce a significant change in behavior. Increasing F/V consumption, even in relatively small amounts, would be an important step forward in improving the diet and overall health of Americans. This study was the first of its kind to measure purchasing patterns objectively (through analysis of purchase receipts, rather than personal opinion/evaluation surveys) and in a wide-scope retail environment that includes all grocery store purchases by participants. Significant increases or decreases in the amount of money spent on F/V, or the amount (pounds) of F/V purchased were not seen, however a small correlation (r = 0.133) exists when comparing the weight of F/V purchased pre/post intervention. Data from Food Frequency Questionnaires shows participants consuming significantly higher amounts of F/V post intervention (p=0.043). The tour group and education group experienced an average increase of 0.7 servings per day. Future interventions might benefit by extending their scope to include cooking demonstrations, in-home interventions, and education on healthy eating outside of the home. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.S. Compras sustentáveis em empresas construtoras de edifícios. / Sustainable procurement in building construction companies

Patrícia Alves do Nascimento 21 January 2016 (has links)
In the present scenario in civil construction, as in many other industries, the issue of sustainability is timely. The scarcity of natural resources and climate change have called for new forms of business and political organization. Acting sustainably brings a number of benefits ranging from the preservation of natural resources (general benefits) to improving marketing firms (specific benefits). Within this scenario, issues such as sustainable construction, green building, sustainable development, social responsibility and environmental certifications are being widely discussed. The focus of this research is the alignment of sustainability issues concerning the procurement sector, which constitutes an important link between the organization\'s strategy and its suppliers (necessary for the materialization of the building product), as part of construction companies building. This research aims to address the implementation of sustainable procurement process and its practical implications, such as the inclusion of sustainability requirements in key processes. At first, a literature review concerning the topic of procurement, supply chain, supply chain management, sustainability, sustainable building and social responsibility was carried out. Also, a study was conducted in order to assess the level of perception and action of building construction companies of the general sustainability issues and sustainable procurement. The contextualization collaborated to propose changes in key processes of procurement and the preparation of standard documentation sector including sustainability criteria in the selection and supplier registration. By analyzing the supply chain from the perspective of sustainability, the focus should be on management of operations related to the environment, considering the optimization of environmental factors within the supply chain during production, consumption, customer service and disposal of waste.
