The involvement of faith based organizations with sexually abused adolescent females in the Paarl communityThirion, Melanie 08 1900 (has links)
This research explores reasons why congregations in Paarl community are not involved, as faith based organizations (FBO's), with the support of female adolescent victims of sexual abuse.
The researcher conducts a literature review concerning the developmental phase of adolescence and issues regarding sexuality that emerge from this phase. The researcher discusses the nature and effects of sexual abuse and statistics regarding this abuse. Different church leaderships' statements regarding the prevalence of sexual abuse are also viewed.
Based on the literature study, empirical research is conducted to explore why congregations in Paarl are not involved as FBO's with the support of adolescent female victims of sexual abuse. The researcher uses basic individual interviews with several leaders of congregations in Paarl to gather the data needed.
Lastly, the data is analyzed and discussed. Based on this discussion, the researcher offers some guidelines for congregations to become more involved as FBO's with adolescent female victims of sexual abuse. / Social Work / M.Diac.(Direction: Youth Work)

Thesis (MMus (Music))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009. / The purpose of this thesis is twofold. In the first instance, it is to document the origins and history of the eisteddfod in general, and more specifically, in South Africa. In the second instance, this thesis will attempt to describe the meaning and role of the eisteddfod in South Africa. This will be achieved with the help of a case study, which will require that a local eisteddfod be researched and discussed. As a result of involvement with eisteddfods over a period of twenty-five years (first as a participant and later as a teacher and a member of the judging panel), the writer has, over time, become increasingly fascinated with the phenomenon of the eisteddfod. Some of the questions that have arisen include: Why do eisteddfods still take palce in South Africa? What role do they play in the present-day cultural education of learners? Do they still bear relevance in current musical (specifically vocal) practice? This thesis is aimed at determining why such high value is attached to eisteddfods in certain communities. Why did this centuries-old tradition, brought from the northern hemisphere to South Africa, survive for so long? And why is it so important for some teachers, parents and children that they must participate?
There is a large volume of literature concerning the international history of the eisteddfod. As this general history is already comprehensively described, it will only be presented in this thesis as a broad historical framework for the more specific history of the eisteddfod in South Africa. The local history of the eisteddfod is, however, poorly covered by published information. The literature in existence is often incomplete, and in most cases covers only up to the 1960‟s. News and magazine archives can only really help to identify the location and date of various eisteddfods, and to highlight some interesting aspects thereof. The latest academic literature was published as far back as 1994. The hypothesis of the current study relates to the suspicion that significant change has taken place in the last thirteen years (since 1994) regarding the meaning and
vi
function of the eisteddfod in South Africa. As the literature relating to this period is so sparse, this hypothesis will be empirically tested in a case study. To place the eisteddfod in South Africa in a historical context it is important to first investigate its origins. Its origin in Wales and subsequent development will be examined. This background study will assist in determining how eisteddfods in South Africa compare with those in other countries. To describe the development of the eisteddfod in South Africa is more complicated, due to the lack of an accurately described history. The defined scope of this thesis does not, however, include the production of an accurate history. Rather, a partial history is compiled using contemporary sources such as newspapers and magazines, as well as secondary sources. The most important and possibly the most challenging aspect of this thesis concerns an in-depth investigation of the Paarl-Valley Eisteddfod.
The purpose of this investigation was an empirical study to collect information regarding a specific eisteddfod as well as the community that participate and support it. This information was used to form interpretations as to whether an institution like the eisteddfod is still relevant, and if it still adds value to the development of children, learners and musicians. It also helped to direct speculation about the meaning and function of the eisteddfod to participants, parents and teachers.

Assessing risk in the Paarl/Berg River region by means of various portfolio diversification modelsMaritz, Gerrit 12 1900 (has links)
On t.p.: Masters of Agricultural management. / Thesis (MAgricAdmin)--Stellenbosch University, 2002. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The need to take account of risk in agriculture must be part of every decision taken in
agriculture. Yet risk is nothing to be too afraid of Risk is a choice rather than a fate.
The actions we dare to take, which depend on how free we are to make choices, are what
the theory of risk is all about. The task is rather to manage risk effectively, within the
capacity of the farmer, business or group in order to withstand adverse outcomes. Some
methods of managing risks are feasible for all types of farms. Others are only feasible for
certain sizes and types of farms. Therefore, farmers in general need a systematic
technique that will enable them to choose an efficient investment strategy from among all
feasible strategies. Specifically, given n risky assets (such as the different enterprises in
the PaarlIBerg River region), it is essential to seek a diversification strategy which yields
a portfolio lying on the efficient frontier.
The research question was whether different diversification models (Markowitz
diversification model, Single Index Model and the Capital Asset Pricing Model) that are
normally applied in capital markets for the construction of optimal diversified portfolios
consisting out of different shares, are also applicable on risky portfolios in agriculture
comprising different enterprises in the PaarlIBerg River region.
The efficient frontier can be seen as the graphical representation of a set of portfolios that
maximize expected return for each level of portfolio risk. The Microsoft Excel portfolio
optimiser (SOLVER) programme was used to illustrate the investment proportions,
expected returns, and standard deviations of the portfolios ofthe efficient frontier.
The Single Index Model (SIM) can be used as an alternative to Markowitz diversification
model. It drastically reduces the number of parameters needed to be estimated and yields
the efficient set relatively easily without the technical difficulties characterising the fullrank
solution. However, if the SIM assumptions are in contradiction to the actual data,
the simplification of the calculations is achieved at the cost of getting imprecise results.
The simplicity of SIM calculations was attained at a cost of constructing a sub-optimal
portfolio, which does not lie on the corresponding efficient frontier.
The Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM) reveals that there is a great deal of systematic
risk in relation to the portfolio enclosed in this study. By using the CAPM it is possible
to determine which part of the risk the producer can control (non-systematic risk) and
which part the producer has no control over (systematic risk). The proportions of
systematic risk that can be diversified away are small, relative to the total risk of the
Farm Sector Portfolio.
The success of these models depends on the efficiency of the market, as weU as a large,
up-to-date and reliable data source. Many younger cultivars could not be included in this
study, due to the limited availability of data. In the next few years as data become
available, it will be possible to construct efficient frontiers out of a wider range of
enterprises. Different enterprises and cultivars will increase the number of alternative
uses for natural resources in the PaarlIBerg River region through diversification. This
will result in more choices for the farmer, and more flexibility in the decision-making
process. Without reliable data, the result will be "garbage in, garbage out."
Dit is eerder keuse as noodlot.
Ander is slegs
grens.
Die navorsingsvraag was of verskillende diversifiseringsmodelle (Markowitz

A scientific investigation of the immunomodulatory properties of an indigenous plant, Sutherlandia frutescensGonyela, Odwa 01 1900 (has links)
Traditional medicines prepared from Sutherlandia frutescens are used to manage diseases including HIV and cancer. This study aimed at isolating and identifying biologically active compounds isolated from S. frutescens.
Sutherlandia frutescens plants were collected in Petrusburg and Paarl. Powdered plant material was extracted using ethanol or water and their metabolite composition was compared using UPLC-MS. A novel cycloartane, an acetylated variant of this compound as well as a Sutherlandioside B triterpenoid was isolated and characterised using chromatographic and analytical techniques such as NMR and UPLC-MS.
Preliminary biological studies were conducted to assess the activity of plant extracts on cell toxicity, herpes virus replication and cytokine expression. The results of this study suggest that aqueous extracts from S. frutescens do not appear to be cytotoxic or show anti-herpetic activity, but may activate the immune system by increasing expression of IL-6, IL-10 and TNFα. Further research should be conducted to confirm and optimise these results. / Life and Consumer Sciences / M. Sc. (Life Science)

Thesis (MEd (Education))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study originated out of the need to explore and study research opportunities from within die creative discipline of the writing art. Through autoethnographic and narrative writing, it explores the experience and conclusions of two very specific research opportunities. These opportunities provide insight with regards to the suggested ways in which creative writing can be taught, through the stimulation of imagination and the integration of experience based activities in the pre-writing phase.
The first opportunity reports on a creative writing workshop in Paarl on invite of the Taalmuseum and monument, while the second opportunity in cooperation with LAPA Publishers entails a book process for Grade 7 learners.
The study consists out of four interdependent divisions rather than chapters. It entails a methodological division (A) that gives academic structure and support to the study, two practice based divisions (B and C) with weaved literature in division B and a summary division (D) with conclusions and implications. Further more, the study integratively provides an oversight of four important phases in the life of the researcher with regards to a personal creative writing journey.

A life-skills intervention programme addressing the selfconcept of Afrikaans-speaking youth offendersWicomb, Priscilla Zenobia 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MEdPsych (Educational Psychology))--Stellenbosch University, 2008. / Life orientation is fundamental in empowering learners to live meaningful lives. Life-skills
education and training forms part of life orientation and helps to address the abovementioned
aspect. Life-skills education and training falls under the most recent and powerful
approaches in handling psychological problems. It strives to adapt the principles of
psychology and social science into teachable skills to ensure intra-personal effectiveness
and improve the general quality of peoples' lives.
The aim of this pilot study was to alter The Path programme to design and develop an intrapersonal
life-skills programme aimed at enhancing the self-concept of youth offenders. The
intervention research model of Rothman and Thomas (1994) was employed as foundation
for the design and development of The Altered Path programme. The intervention research
model was chosen as it aimed at creating a means to address problems experienced by
individuals and society. It strives to improve the life, health and well-being of individuals and
society.
This purposeful sampling consisted of six Afrikaans-speaking, male youth offenders from the
Drakenstein Juvenile Centre. The Altered Path programme was implemented in three
stages. The first stage consisted of sessions one to seven. The following topics were
covered during this stage: introduction and programme orientation, conceptualisation of
mission statements and elements, past personality influences and Cup of Sorrow, the
Positive Prophecy and Talent Shield, the mission statement, the vision statement and goal
setting. The second stage, which consisted of sessions eight and nine, entailed the training
of the participants for service learning. The third stage entailed the implementation of the
service learning process.
The study found that The Altered Path programme could contribute towards a growth in
intra-personal skills with regard to self-awareness, personal goal setting, spirituality, morals
and values, self-esteem and self-regulation (both emotional and cognitive). The result of the
intra-personal growth was that the interpersonal skills with regard to communication and
helping skills of participants improved. In answer to the research question the finding was
made that the intra-personal development positively affected the following dimensions of
their self-concept: personal, ideal, cognitive, spiritual, social self and psychological self. In
the light hereof the statement can be made that The Altered Path programme seems to have
a positive effect on the overall self-concept of the participants. Conscious development of
self-knowledge was identified as an element of the programme that could be refined to
ensure that all participants develop self-knowledge in the same way during the field study.
