The Effects of Parceling on Testing Group Differences in Second-Order CFA Models: A Comparison between Multi-Group CFA and MIMIC Models

Zou, Yuanyuan 2009 August 1900 (has links)
Using multi-group confirmatory factor analysis (MCFA) and multiple-indicator-multiple-cause (MIMIC) to investigate group difference in the context of the second-order factor model with either the unparceled or parceled data had never been thoroughly examined. The present study investigated (1) the difference of MCFA and MIMIC in terms of Type I error rate and power when testing the mean difference of the higher-order latent factor (delta kappa) in a second-order confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) model; and (2) the impact of data parceling on the test of (delta kappa) between groups by using the two approaches. The methods were introduced, including the design of the models, the design of Monte Carlo simulation, the calculation of empirical Type I Error and empirical power, the two parceling strategies, and the adjustment of the random error variance. The results suggested that MCFA should be favored when the compared groups were when the different group sizes were paired with the different generalized variances, and MIMIC should be favored when the groups were balanced (i.e., have equal group sizes) in social science and education disciplines. This study also provided the evidence that parceling could improve the power for both MCFA and MIMIC when the factor loadings were low without bringing bias into the solution when the first-order factors were collapsed. However, parceling strategies might not be necessary when the factor loadings were high. The results also indicated that the two approaches were equally favored when domain representative parceling strategy was applied.

The Tiracanga Logradouro Settlement, located in the Canindà municipality, was created in 1989. The conquest of this territory parcel took place due to the fighting and resistance of peasants. The research goal of this work is to analyze the settlerâs territoriality process and how this territoriality is expressed in a settlement like the Tiracanga Logradouro, which is fragmented in CearÃÂs semiarid. The materialization of this study was based on on-field studies and the dialogues with peasant settlers, seeking to record the widest variety of aspects related to the peasantâs origins, their fight for land, their organizational situation and land use. For this purpose, participation in meetings with associations and groups of peasants was programmed and interviews with some of them in their residences, as well as with some peasant leaders were organized. Throughout the text, we search to overcome the division between formal and informal knowledge with regards to the speech of researched individuals. Bibliographic research on the subject was elaborated through books, theses, dissertations and the collection of data at the INCRA. The study revealed the organizational and settlement use strategies practiced by the peasants, including discussions on the use of their land parcel, in which agreements and disagreements amongst settlers appeared with regards to the adoption of this land exploitation model. It was concluded that families articulate the use of their land parcel based on familiar unit and the family nucleus and regain collective use as a strategy for family unit reproduction

It is the hypothesis that is possible to measure the impact of this model taking with categories of analysis of the changing in the urban landscape, in the urban mobility and in the integration to the urban dynamic. Using the objective criteria associated to urban morphology, the valuation of the effects caused by this model reproduction, alone or in group, intend to cause the creation of arguments that sustain technically the oppose to this model, criticized for different areas of knowledge. Throughout the process of this study, has been developed a method to read the effects caused by these ?closed urban nucleus? in the city. The punctuation criteria established to evaluate the resultant effects of this urban design permit problematize and question the limits of this urban development model. This research analyzed 85 ?closed urban nucleus? located at Valinhos, belonging to Campinas Metropolitan Region, S?o Paulo State.

As a matter of fact, it is clear that there is not enough research about the theme, which results in direct damage to the entire society once the urban rules are not respected. The fact that this law is more than thirty years old does not exclude the interest in deepening its analysis because, since then, a new Federal Constitution was promulgated and several other laws related to the theme became effective. In this context, a few important questions shall be posed: have the urban crimes determined by Law nº 6.766/79 been corroborated by the new constitutional order? Is there any interest in criminalizing actions referring to the illegal parceling of the urban land? What is the best way of criminalizing them? Which criminal legal interests do these crimes protect? This study aims to discuss such an important matter and therefore stimulating deeper research by legal experts about the theme. Hopefully, as a consequence of increased debate on illegal parceling of the land, a healthier and more sustainable urban development in a long term perspective will be fostered / O estudo da Lei do Parcelamento do Solo Urbano - Lei nº 6.766/79 - é essencial para aprofundar as questões que envolvem os problemas urbanísticos existentes na nossa sociedade.

Alternative Estimation Approaches Predicting College Retention amongst African American Students

Turner, Christal-Joy Jewell 07 1900 (has links)
This quasi-experimental study explored African American student's sense of belonging (SOBE), academic self-efficacy (ASE), parents' educational attainment (PEA), and academic success (GPA) at historically Black colleges and universities and predominantly white institutions. The purpose of the present study measured how the factors influenced the rate of persistence to see how colleges and universities could assist to retain African American students in the pursuit of full matriculation through an independent samples t-test, multiple regression analyses, confirmatory factor analyses, and structural equation modeling with the results from methods such as item parceling, factor scoring, and sum scoring being compared. Results indicated that the second-order SEM, item parceling, and factor score regression approaches were found to have consistent results in terms of significant predictors. Parental educational attainment was found to not have an effect on academic achievement or collegiate persistence, but sense of belonging and academic self-efficacy were found to be significant predictors of GPA and CP with ASE being the strongest indicator for collegiate persistence and academic achievement. Implications for future research suggest additional schools be included and higher education institutions should seek further assessment to ensure their African American students feel included in an effort to increase overall persistence amongst African American students.
