Die representasie van omstrede kwessies in kontemporêre Afrikaanse jeugverhale / Margaretha Johanna Fritz

Fritz, Margaretha Johanna January 2007 (has links)
There are certain issues - such as violence, sexuality, politics and religion - which are problematic but have to be dealt with in society. In this dissertation types of controversial issues present in recent Afrikaans youth literature, the portrayal of those issues, and the ways in which solutions are offered for these issues are investigated. The argument follows from the assumption that the literature which the adolescent reads, has a directive value. Quite often the reader will choose to read material about a certain situation with which the reader is also faced in real life. It may be easy for the reader to identify with a character in similar circumstances or facing the same dilemma. Through the actions of the character, the reader can then explore certain avenues or possibilities which have the potential to be helpful in the solution of the problem or issue. For this dissertation research was done about certain controversial issues and related aspects in literature in general, which are then applied to three youth novels: Skilpoppe (1998) by Barrie Hough, Daar's vis in die punch (2002) by Jackie Nagtegaal and Nie vir kinders nie (2005) by Francois Bloemhof. These three texts were chosen because all three of them have generated public discussion, specifically in the media, about the presence of controversial issues. The results indicate the portrayal of the controversial issues to be unbiased and from a non-judgemental authoring perspective. The presence of the text internal corrective, which refers to the portrayal of a certain issue thereby giving it an outcome (positive or negative) or an alternative, is noticeable and is discussed in this dissertation. / Thesis (M.A. (Afrikaans and Dutch))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2007.

[en] RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PARENTING AND EXECUTIVE FUNCTIONS OF CHOOL-AGED CHILDREN / [pt] RELAÇÕES ENTRE PARENTALIDADE E FUNÇÕES EXECUTIVAS DE CRIANÇAS EM IDADE ESCOLAR

ANNA CAROLINA TARDIN A ESTEFAN 17 July 2018 (has links)
[en] The executive functions (EFs) are a range of cognitive skills involved in the conscious control of action and thought. The development of these functions follows the extended myelination process of the prefrontal cortex and, because of that, it is exposed, not only to biological factors but also to environmental ones. Being the parent figure an important agent in children s environment, this academic work intended to investigate the relationships between parental behavior and executive functions in school-age children. This work is formed by two studies: the first one is based on a systematic review that, from a detailed selection, elected 10 articles that were analyzed considering general and methodological aspects, parenting, EFs and results found on the influence that prental behaviours perform on EFs. All articles presented direct or indirect relationships between parental behavior and child executive functioning. The second study aimed to investigate the relationships between parenting style, maternal practices and executive functions in 8-11-year-old children. Furthermore, it investigated the role of the mother s education and the family income in these relationships. The sample consisted of 75 children that were assessed regarding working memory, inhibitory control, verbal fluency, and planning. As results, the parenting practice of a lenient discipline by the parents was associated with inhibitory control s performance, and moral behavior was positively associated with working memory. In turn, mother s education and income were po-sitively correlated with inhibitory control, planning, and verbal fluency. In conclusion, some relationships between parenting and executive functions were found, highlighting the importance of parental consistency in this dynamics.

Gender Differences in the Relationships Among Parenting Styles and College Student Mental Health

Barton, Alison L., Kirtley, Michael S. 01 January 2012 (has links)
Objective: Levels of student depression may increase as stress increases; parenting styles may be one indirect source of stress. The authors examined the role of parenting style in relationship to student stress, anxiety, and depression, with focused attention on gender differences. Participants: Participants were 290 undergraduate students (58% female, mean age = 19). Methods: Cross-sectional design. Participants completed surveys containing measures of parenting styles, college stress, anxiety, and depression. Results: Anxiety and stress acted as mediators between some maternal parenting styles and female student depression. No mediational relationships were found for male student ratings. Conclusions: Daughters may be more susceptible to the influences of maternal parenting styles, which can either prepare or fail to prepare them for management and avoidance of stressors that are encountered during the college transition. College counseling centers and student affairs personnel may wish to focus attention on the instruction of self-management and problem-solving skills for incoming students.

The relationship between parenting style, self-regulated learning and academic achievement in selected primary schools in Ethiopia

Tigist Merha Tsemrekal 11 1900 (has links)
The main research question was What are the relationships between parenting style, self-regulated learning (SRL) and the academic achievement of selected (upper) primary school students in Ethiopia? The following specific research questions were formulated: • What are the views of the students on the parenting styles, and on parental acceptance and control, the cognitive strategies they use, and their self-regulated learning? • What is the relationship between parenting style and SRL? • What is the relationship between parenting style and academic achievement? • What is the relationship between SRL and academic achievement? • Does SRL moderate the relationship between parenting style and academic achievement? In this study a correlational design was used, but it was also exploratory and descriptive. Data were collected by means of a self-report questionnaire, while the academic achievements of the students were derived from official records. The questionnaire was completed by 477 randomly selected students from two classes in each of five schools in Hawasa, Ethiopia. The analysis of the data was done by means of descriptive, correlation, and ANOVA tests. The major findings included the following: Most of the children experienced acceptance by their parents, in particular from their female parents/guardians. The best levels of acceptance were, for example, “When I get a poor grade at school, my parents encourage me to try harder”, or “I can count on my parents to help me if I have some kind of a problem”, and “My parents keep pushing me to do my best in whatever I do”. However, it was found that the parents seldom spent time merely talking to their children. The female parents/guardians seemed to control their children more than the male parents/guardians, and were more involved with their children. The children, though, also believed that their parents/guardians did not really know how they spent their leisure time. More often the children perceived their parents as being neglectful. Regarding their cognitive strategies, the students particularly made use of memorization. The cognitive strategies of the children whose parents were authoritative were significantly better than those of the other children. When a student’s self-regulation increased, his/her cognitive strategies also increased, and when the cognitive strategies improved, so did the average achievement. The parents’ parenting styles were also significantly related to their children’s achievement, and were moderated by cognitive strategies as co-variants. / Psychology of Education / D. Ed. Předávání hodnot v rodině / Transmission of values in the family

Bryknarová, Jana January 2011 (has links)
Thesis is concerned with the transmission of values and norms in the family. The goal is to quantify the level of transmission of values between children and parents. The second step is to identify what impact on transmission of value in the family has education of parents and parenting style, which apply to a child during adolescence. Underpinning the findings is the analysis of data file "Cultural and value orientations 2008", which is unique in that it includes real families (parents and their adult children). Attention is focused on the values for different levels of generality (the value frameworks, value orientations, attitudes and norms) and education in the family as a source of values. Analysis shows a high degree of agreement between parents and their children in the sphere of values. As the main variables that affect the transmission of values were identified education of parents and parenting style.
