Understanding and Improving Object-Oriented Software Through Static Software Analysis

Software engineers need to understand the structure of the programs they construct. This task is made difficult by the intangible nature of software, and its complexity, size and changeability. Static analysis tools can help by extracting information from source code and conveying it to software engineers. However, the information provided by typical tools is limited, and some potentially rich veins of information - particularly metrics and visualisations - are under-utilised because developers cannot easily acquire or make use of the data. This thesis documents new tools and techniques for static analysis of software. It addresses the problem of generating parsers directly from standard grammars, thus avoiding the com-mon practice of customising grammars to comply with the limitations of a given parsing al-gorithm, typically LALR(1). This is achieved by a new parser generator that applies a range of bottom-up parsing algorithms to produce a hybrid parsing automaton. Consequently, we can generate more powerful deterministic parsers - up to and including LR(k) - without incurring the combinatorial explosion that makes canonical LR(k) parsers impractical. The range of practical parsers is further extended to include GLR, which was originally developed for natural language parsing but is shown here to also have advantages for static analysis of programming languages. This emphasis on conformance to standard grammars im-proves the rigour of static analysis tools and allows clearer definition and communication of derived information, such as metrics. Beneath the syntactic structure of software (exposed by parsing) lies the deeper semantic structure of declarations, scopes, classes, methods, inheritance, invocations, and so on. In this work, we present a new tool that performs semantic analysis on parse trees to produce a comprehensive semantic model suitable for processing by other static analysis tools. An XML pipeline approach is used to expose the syntactic and semantic models of the software and to derive metrics and visualisations. The approach is demonstrated producing several types of metrics and visualisations for real software, and the value of static analysis for informing software engineering decisions is shown.

Abstract interpretation of domain-specific embedded languages

A domain-specific embedded language (DSEL) is a domain-specific programming language with no concrete syntax of its own. Defined as a set of combinators encapsulated in a module, it borrows the syntax and tools (such as type-checkers and compilers) of its host language; hence it is economical to design, introduce, and maintain. Unfortunately, this economy is counterbalanced by a lack of room for growth. DSELs cannot match sophisticated domain-specific languages that offer tools for domainspecific error-checking and optimisation. These tools are usually based on syntactic analyses, so they do not work on DSELs. Abstract interpretation is a technique ideally suited to the analysis of DSELs, due to its semantic, rather than syntactic, approach. It is based upon the observation that analysing a program is equivalent to evaluating it over an abstract semantic domain. The mathematical properties of the abstract domain are such that evaluation reduces to solving a mutually recursive set of equations. This dissertation shows how abstract interpretation can be applied to a DSEL by replacing it with an abstract implementation of the same interface; evaluating a program with the abstract implementation yields an analysis result, rather than an executable. The abstract interpretation of DSELs provides a foundation upon which to build sophisticated error-checking and optimisation tools. This is illustrated with three examples: an alphabet analyser for CSP, an ambiguity test for parser combinators, and a definedness test for attribute grammars. Of these, the ambiguity test for parser combinators is probably the most important example, due to the prominence of parser combinators and their rather conspicuous lack of support for the well-known LL(k) test. In this dissertation, DSELs and their signatures are encoded using the polymorphic lambda calculus. This allows the correctness of the abstract interpretation of DSELs to be proved using the parametricity theorem: safety is derived for free from the polymorphic type of a program. Crucially, parametricity also solves a problem commonly encountered by other analysis methods: it ensures the correctness of the approach in the presence of higher-order functions.

Natural Language Interface On A Video Data Model

The video databases and retrieval of data from these databases have become popular in various business areas of work with the improvements in technology. As a kind of video database, video archive systems need user-friendly interfaces to retrieve video frames. In this thesis, an NLP based user interface to a video database system is developed using a content-based spatio-temporal video data model. The data model is focused on the semantic content which includes objects, activities, and spatial properties of objects. Spatio-temporal relationships between video objects and also trajectories of moving objects can be queried with this data model. In this video database system, NL interface enables flexible querying. The queries, which are given as English sentences, are parsed using Link Parser. Not only exact matches but similar objects and activities are also returned from the database with the help of the conceptual ontology module to return all related frames to the user. This module is implemented using a distance-based method of semantic similarity search on the semantic domain-independent ontology, WordNet. The semantic representations of the given queries are extracted from their syntactic structures using information extraction techniques. The extracted semantic representations are used to call the related parts of the underlying spatio-temporal video data model to calculate the results of the queries.

Construction de ressources linguistiques arabes à l’aide du formalisme de grammaires de propriétés en intégrant des mécanismes de contrôle / Building arabic linguistic resources using the property grammar formalism by integrating control mechanisms

La construction de ressources linguistiques arabes riches en informations syntaxiques constitue un enjeu important pour le développement de nouveaux outils de traitement automatique. Cette thèse propose une approche pour la création d’un treebank de l’arabe intégrant des informations d’un type nouveau reposant sur le formalisme des Grammaires de Propriétés. Une propriété syntaxique caractérise une relation pouvant exister entre deux unités d’une certaine structure syntaxique. Cette grammaire est induite automatiquement à partir du treebank arabe ATB, ce qui constitue un enrichissement de cette ressource tout en conservant ses qualités. Cet enrichissement a été également appliqué aux résultats d’analyse d’un analyseur état de l’art du domaine, le Stanford Parser, offrant la possibilité d’une évaluation s’appuyant sur un ensemble de mesures obtenues à partir de cette ressource. Les étiquettes des unités de cette grammaire sont structurées selon une hiérarchie de types permettant la variation de leur degré de granularité, et par conséquent du degré de précision des informations. Nous avons pu ainsi construire, à l’aide de cette grammaire, d’autres ressources linguistiques arabes. En effet, sur la base de cette nouvelle ressource, nous avons développé un analyseur syntaxique probabiliste à base de propriétés syntaxiques, le premier appliqué pour l'arabe. Une grammaire de propriétés lexicalisée probabiliste fait partie de son modèle d’apprentissage pour pouvoir affecter positivement le résultat d’analyse et caractériser ses structures syntaxiques avec les propriétés de ce modèle. Nous avons enfin évalué les résultats obtenus en les comparant à celles du Stanford Parser. / The building of syntactically informative Arabic linguistic resources is a major issue for the development of new machine processing tools. We propose in this thesis to create an Arabic treebank that integrates a new type of information, which is based on the Property Grammar formalism. A syntactic property is a relation between two units of a given syntactic structure. This grammar is automatically induced from the Arabic treebank ATB. We enriched this resource with the property representations of this grammar, while retaining its qualities. We also applied this enrichment to the parsing results of a state-of-the-art analyzer, the Stanford Parser. This provides the possibility of an evaluation using a measure set, which is calculated on this resource. We structured the tags of the units in this grammar according to a type hierarchy. This permit to vary the granularity level of these units, and consequently the accuracy level of the information. We have thus been able to construct, using this grammar, other Arabic linguistic resources. Secondly, based on this new resource, we developed a probabilistic syntactic parser based on syntactic properties. This is the first analyzer of this type that we have applied to Arabic. In the learning model, we integrated a probabilistic lexicalized property grammar that may positively affect the parsing result and describe its syntactic structures with its properties. Finally, we evaluated the parsing results of this approach by comparing them to those of the Stanford Parser.

Este trabalho tem como fulcro o desenvolvimento de um gerador de analisadores sintáticos do tipo top-down para gramáticas LL(1) com entrada gráfica da gramática, bem como uma comparação do mesmo com outros geradores em uso no mercado. Como resultado foi obtido um gerador totalmente funcional, e foi mostrado como ele é superior aos outros analisadores. São descritos detalhes da implementação e foi elaborado um manual de uso do sistema implementado em Java independente de ambientes de programação. / This thesis has as its main goal the development a parser generator using top-down syntax analysis for LL(1) grammars. Its input is a graph grammar. A comparison with available parser generators is also presented. As a result a fully executable generator, and the fact that it is superior to the other generators was demonstrated. This work contains details of the implementation, and presents a users manual of the system, which was implemented in Java. The system is independent of programming environments.

This thesis concerns itself with the problems of manipulation with Cascading Style Sheets. The first aim is to create a library for manipulation with Cascading Style Sheets - an object interface of Cascading Style Sheet is proposed, a parser is generated by means of an appliance of JavaCC, the implementation of interface is completed and as a whole connected to a functional unit. The library enables reading Cascading Style Sheet and its transfer into an object representation, editing and subsequently exporting back to the text file. The second part of the thesis deals with the implementation of library for assign property values - every (X)HTML document is formed by the tree of elements to which the rules are consequently searched for in CSS and their declarations are asigned in the correct order. In conclusion of the thesis the DEMO application, which illustrates the possibilities of both libraries and facilitates performing of experiments or testing, is described. Hereafter the technique of profiling, which enables to find out the efficiently demanding passages, which can be optimised further, in the source code, is shown.

Building software tools for combat modeling and analysis

An original high level language METALS (Meta-Language for Combat Simulations) and its associated parser and C++ code generator were designed to reduce the amount of time and developmental efforts needed to build sophisticated real world combat simulations. A C++ simulation of the Navy's current mine avoidance problem in littoral waters was generated using high level METALS description in the thesis as a demonstration.
