Cognitive smart agents for optimising OpenFlow rules in software defined networks

This research provides a robust solution based on artificial intelligence (AI) techniques to overcome the challenges in Software Defined Networks (SDNs) that can jeopardise the overall performance of the network. The proposed approach, presented in the form of an intelligent agent appended to the SDN network, comprises of a new hybrid intelligent mechanism that optimises the performance of SDN based on heuristic optimisation methods under an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) paradigm. Evolutionary optimisation techniques, including Particle Swarm Optimisation (PSO) and Genetic Algorithms (GAs) are deployed to find the best set of inputs that give the maximum performance of an SDN-based network. The ANN model is trained and applied as a predictor of SDN behaviour according to effective traffic parameters. The parameters that were used in this study include round-trip time and throughput, which were obtained from the flow table rules of each switch. A POX controller and OpenFlow switches, which characterise the behaviour of an SDN, have been modelled with three different topologies. Generalisation of the prediction model has been tested with new raw data that were unseen in the training stage. The simulation results show a reasonably good performance of the network in terms of obtaining a Mean Square Error (MSE) that is less than 10−6 [superscript]. Following the attainment of the predicted ANN model, utilisation with PSO and GA optimisers was conducted to achieve the best performance of the SDN-based network. The PSO approach combined with the predicted SDN model was identified as being comparatively better than the GA approach in terms of their performance indices and computational efficiency. Overall, this research demonstrates that building an intelligent agent will enhance the overall performance of the SDN network. Three different SDN topologies have been implemented to study the impact of the proposed approach with the findings demonstrating a reduction in the packets dropped ratio (PDR) by 28-31%. Moreover, the packets sent to the SDN controller were also reduced by 35-36%, depending on the generated traffic. The developed approach minimised the round-trip time (RTT) by 23% and enhanced the throughput by 10%. Finally, in the event where SDN controller fails, the optimised intelligent agent can immediately take over and control of the entire network.

The automatic placement of multiple indoor antennas using Particle Swarm Optimisation

In this thesis, a Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) method combined with a ray propagation method is presented as a means to optimally locate multiple antennas in an indoor environment. This novel approach uses Particle Swarm Optimisation combined with geometric partitioning. The PSO algorithm uses swarm intelligence to determine the optimal transmitter location within the building layout. It uses the Keenan-Motley indoor propagation model to determine the fitness of a location. If a transmitter placed at that optimum location, transmitting a maximum power is not enough to meet the coverage requirements of the entire indoor space, then the space is geometrically partitioned and the PSO initiated again independently in each partition. The method outputs the number of antennas, their effective isotropic radiated power (EIRP) and physical location required to meet the coverage requirements. An example scenario is presented for a real building at Loughborough University and is compared against a conventional planning technique used widely in practice.

An intelligent manufacturing system for heat treatment scheduling

This research is focused on the integration problem of process planning and scheduling in steel heat treatment operations environment using artificial intelligent techniques that are capable of dealing with such problems. This work addresses the issues involved in developing a suitable methodology for scheduling heat treatment operations of steel. Several intelligent algorithms have been developed for these propose namely, Genetic Algorithm (GA), Sexual Genetic Algorithm (SGA), Genetic Algorithm with Chromosome differentiation (GACD), Age Genetic Algorithm (AGA), and Mimetic Genetic Algorithm (MGA). These algorithms have been employed to develop an efficient intelligent algorithm using Algorithm Portfolio methodology. After that all the algorithms have been tested on two types of scheduling benchmarks. To apply these algorithms on heat treatment scheduling, a furnace model is developed for optimisation proposes. Furthermore, a system that is capable of selecting the optimal heat treatment regime is developed so the required metal properties can be achieved with the least energy consumption and the shortest time using Neuro-Fuzzy (NF) and Particle Swarm Optimisation (PSO) methodologies. Based on this system, PSO is used to optimise the heat treatment process by selecting different heat treatment conditions. The selected conditions are evaluated so the best selection can be identified. This work addresses the issues involved in developing a suitable methodology for developing an NF system and PSO for mechanical properties of the steel. Using the optimisers, furnace model and heat treatment system model, the intelligent system model is developed and implemented successfully. The results of this system were exciting and the optimisers were working correctly.

Characterising continuous optimisation problems for particle swarm optimisation performance prediction

Real-world optimisation problems are often very complex. Population-based metaheuristics, such as evolutionary algorithms and particle swarm optimisation (PSO) algorithms, have been successful in solving many of these problems, but it is well known that they sometimes fail. Over the last few decades the focus of research in the field has been largely on the algorithmic side with relatively little attention being paid to the study of the problems. Questions such as ‘Which algorithm will most accurately solve my problem?’ or ‘Which algorithm will most quickly produce a reasonable answer to my problem?’ remain unanswered. This thesis contributes to the understanding of optimisation problems and what makes them hard for algorithms, in particular PSO algorithms. Fitness landscape analysis techniques are developed to characterise continuous optimisation problems and it is shown that this characterisation can be used to predict PSO failure. An essential feature of this approach is that multiple problem characteristics are analysed together, moving away from the idea of a single measure of problem hardness. A multi-objective optimisation framework for MED-TVC seawater desalination process based on particle swarm optimisation

Yes / Owing to the high specific energy consumption associated with thermal desalination technologies such as Multi Effect Distillation (MED), there is a wide interest to develop a cost-effective desalination technology. This study focuses on improving the operational, economic, and environmental perspectives of hybrid MED-TVC (thermal vapour compression) process via optimisation. Application of particle swarm optimisation (PSO) in several engineering disciplines have been noted but its potential has not been exploited fully in desalination technologies especially MED-TVC in the past. A multi-objective non-linear optimisation framework based on PSO is constructed here. Two of our earlier models have been used to predict the key process performance and cost indicators. The models are embedded within the PSO optimisation algorithm to develop a new hybrid optimisation model which minimises the total freshwater production cost, total specific energy consumption and brine flow rate while maintaining a fixed freshwater production for a given number of effects and seawater conditions. The steam flow rate and temperature are considered as control variables of the optimisation problem to achieve the objective function. The PSO has successfully achieved the optimum indexes for the hybrid MED-TVC process for a wide range of number of effects. It also shows a maximum reduction of freshwater production cost by 36.5%, a maximum energy saving by 32.1% and a maximum reduction of brine flow rate by 38.3%, while maintaining the productivity of freshwater.

Motion Optimistion Of Plunging Airfoil Using Swarm Algorithm

Micro Aerial Vehicles (MAVs) are battery operated, remote controlled miniature flying vehicles. MAVs are required in military missions, traffic management, hostage situation surveillance, sensing, spying, scientific, rescue, police and mapping applications. The essential characteristics required for MAVs are: light weight, maneuverability, ease of launch in variety of conditions, ability to operate in very hostile environments, stealth capabilities and small size. There are three main classes of MAVs : fixed, rotary and flapping wing MAV’s. There are some MAVs which are combinations of these main classes. Each class has its own advantage and disadvantage. Different scenarios may call for different types of MAV. Amongst the various classes, flapping wing class of MAVs offer the required potential for miniaturisation and maneuverability, necessitating the need to understand flapping wing flight. In the case of flapping winged flight, the thrust required for the vehicle flight is obtained due to the flapping of the wing. Hence for efficient flapping flight, optimising the flap motion is necessary. In this thesis work, an algorithm for motion optimisation of plunging airfoils is developed in a parallel framework. An evolutionary optimisation algorithm, PSO (Particle Swarm Optimisation), is coupled with an unsteady flow solver to develop a generic motion optimisation tool for plunging airfoils. All the unsteady flow computations in this work are done with the HIFUN1 code, developed in–house in the Computational Aerodynamics Laboratory, IISc. This code is a cell centered finite volume compressible flow solver. The motion optimisation algorithm involves starting with a population of motion curves from which an optimal curve is evolved. Parametric representation of curves using NURBS is used for efficient handling of the motion paths. In the present case, the motion paths of a plunging NACA 0012 airfoil is optimised to give maximum flight efficiency for both inviscid and laminar cases. Also, the present analysis considers all practically achievable plunge paths, si- nusoidal and non–sinusoidal, with varying plunge amplitudes and slopes. The results show promise, and indicate that the algorithm can be extended to more realistic three dimension motion optimisation studies.

Particle swarm optimisation in dynamically changing environments - an empirical study

Real-world optimisation problems often are of a dynamic nature. Recently, much research has been done to apply particle swarm optimisation (PSO) to dynamic environments (DE). However, these research efforts generally focused on optimising one variation of the PSO algorithm for one type of DE. The aim of this work is to develop a more comprehensive view of PSO for DEs. This thesis studies different schemes of characterising and taxonomising DEs, performance measures used to quantify the performance of optimisation algorithms applied to DEs, various adaptations of PSO to apply PSO to DEs, and the effectiveness of these approaches on different DE types. The standard PSO algorithm has shown limitations when applied to DEs. To overcome these limitations, the standard PSO can be modi ed using personal best reevaluation, change detection and response, diversity maintenance, or swarm sub-division and parallel tracking of optima. To investigate the strengths and weaknesses of these approaches, a representative sample of algorithms, namely, the standard PSO, re-evaluating PSO, reinitialising PSO, atomic PSO (APSO), quantum swarm optimisation (QSO), multi-swarm, and self-adapting multi-swarm (SAMS), are empirically analysed. These algorithms are analysed on a range of DE test cases, and their ability to detect and track optima are evaluated using performance measures designed for DEs. The experiments show that QSO, multi-swarm and reinitialising PSO provide the best results. However, the most effective approach to use depends on the dimensionality, modality and type of the DEs, as well as on the objective of the algorithm. A number of observations are also made regarding the behaviour of the swarms, and the influence of certain control parameters of the algorithms evaluated.
