Gravure offset printing for fabrication of electronic devices and integrated components in LTCC modules

Abstract The thesis is concerned with the development of gravure-offset-printing and low temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) technologies for the miniaturisation of electronic devices and components. The development work has been verified by several applications. Several aspects of gravure-offset-printing have to be optimised in order to make it suitable for fine-line printing and these have been addressed in the study with a focus on the printing inks and plates. Gravure-offset-printing inks were developed from commercial thick-film pastes. The effects of different ink characteristics on some properties of conductor lines, such as line width and resistivity, were studied. The dependence of the conductor lines on the quality of the engravings in the printing plates was also studied. The narrowest line widths obtained were about 30 μm with an accuracy of ±5 μm. Various LTCC compositions and processing steps involved in the production of integrated electronic devices, and the properties of several fabricated devices are discussed. The devices include inductors, band-pass filters and resistors for the 1–2 GHz frequency range. Miniaturisation has been the main focus of attention. For example, the integration of high-permittivity tapes in addition to low-permittivity tapes has made the miniaturisation of filter structures possible. Compatibility between these tapes during firing was found to be good. LTCC technology was further developed by adapting a modified LTCC-on-metal (LTCC-M) approach. A traditional way of guiding heat away from a component is to place a heat-sink under the component and utilise thermal vias and solder balls. In this study high- and low-permittivity tapes were attached directly on a heat-sink. Different heat-sink options were evaluated and the best performance was achieved with an AlN heat-sink which was deposited by screen-printing a Au layer on it. High-power chips were attached directly on the heat-sink through cavities in the LTCC tapes. This approach also restricted the shrinkage of the LTCC tapes. The fabricated test structures and components proved the viability of the approach although the compatibility between the pastes and tapes was not optimal.

Characterization and Modeling of Planar Spiral Inductors and Pad Stack Parasitic Effects

This thesis concentrates on RF/microwave characterization and modeling of planar spiral inductors and pad stack parasitics. The inductors varied in size from 1.9 to 15.3 nH. Several approaches were examined for modeling the planar spiral inductors. The approach developed herein is built around an existing composite model (available in commercial computer-aided design software), with added series and shunt impedances at both the input and output of the existing composite model. Artificial neural network (ANN) software was used to determine the correction impedance values. Another approach investigated was to model the S-parameters of the inductor using a space- mapping model of the input parameters for the existing model. The correction impedance modeling approach was theoretically sound but the level of accuracy need for the ANN model was not obtainable. The space mapping approach had merit but a substrate and parameter scalable model could not be achieved. A pad stack is a section of microstrip line that a surface mounted element is affixed to; these pad stacks are standardized for specific element sizes, so for example any 0805 (80 mils by 50 mils) element may have the same pad stack whether it is a capacitor, inductor or resistor. The pad stack models were necessary because a capacitor model originally developed at the University of South Florida did not include parasitic effects for different input connections. The pad stack parasitic models can be broken down into three types: dual-input, tri-input, and quad-input. Each of the dual- and tri- input models have input angles of either 0 degrees, 45 degrees, or 90 degrees. The models were developed using a combination of microstrip and lumped elements.

Understanding and development of dielectric passivated high efficiency silicon solar cells using spin-on solutions

In this work, spin-on processes were used to improve front- and rear-side technologies of solar cells to increase efficiencies to >20 %. A limited source diffusion process was developed using phosphoric acid dopant solutions developed in-house. An optimal emitter was obtained to be used in conjunction with screen-printed contacts. This emitter was used to improve the efficiency of conventional full aluminum back surface field solar cells to 19.6 %. A streamlined process was then developed to fabricate high-efficiency dielectric rear passivated cells in a single high temperature step. This process combined the diffusion process described earlier with a spin-on dielectric for rear passivation to achieve solar cell efficiencies of ~20%. Several laser candidates were investigated to improve process reproducibility and throughput. Ultra-violet laser with nanosecond pulse width was identified as the optimal choice. Cell efficiencies of ~20% were reproduced using UV laser for ablation of rear dielectric. This cell design and process were transferred to low-cost low-lifetime commercial grade substrates after identifying the optimal substrate characteristics using modeling.

Automated Construction of Macromodels from Frequency Data for Simulation of Distributed Interconnect Networks

As the complexity of interconnects and packages increases and the rise and fall time of the signal decreases, the electromagnetic effects of distributed passive devices are becoming an important factor in determining the performance of gigahertz systems. The electromagnetic behavior extracted using an electromagnetic simulation or from measurements is available as frequency dependent data. This information can be represented as a black box called a macromodel, which captures the behavior of the passive structure at the input/output ports. In this dissertation, the macromodels have been categorized as scalable, passive and broadband macromodels. The scalable macromodels for building design libraries of passive devices have been constructed using multidimensional rational functions, orthogonal polynomials and selective sampling. The passive macromodels for time-domain simulation have been constructed using filter theory and multiport passivity formulae. The broadband macromodels for high-speed simulation have been constructed using band division, selector, subband reordering, subband dilation and pole replacement. An automated construction method has been developed. The construction time of the multiport macromodel has been reduced. A method for reducing the order of the macromodel has been developed. The efficiency of the methods was demonstrated through embedded passive devices, known transfer functions and distributed interconnect networks.

ABSTRACT Globalization pushes more and more intensive competition and brings only minor profit to company globally. To keep key customers, to look for corporate expansion or growth up, and to earn more profit, company should keep improving cost stucture, key technology and strengthening the competition advantage by applying with both internal and external strategies. ¡§Leverage Buyout¡¨ and ¡§Management Buyout¡¨ are two typical operation models of Private Equity Fund and it is very popular and mature in the Western. Recently, the Asia emerging and booming market attracts the interest from Private Equity Fund. Moreover, because Taiwan enterprises have better system, more reasonable market price, and lower interest rate, they are aimed by Private Equity Fund as a gangway to China market. On the other hand, Taiwan domestic enterprises also look for investment from global Private Equity Fund to enhance corporate global competition. This study selects ¡§Yageo Management Buyout¡¨ triggered by Oriont Investment Co., Ltd. in 2011. With analysis of Yageo financial reports, I get Yageo corporation valuation and the reasonable share price at the moment of MBO announcement by Oriont using Porter (1980) Five Forces Analysis to summarize passive components industry key competition and key successful factors. After comparing with actual share price, it is apparent that Yageo share price is undervalued for a long time because Taiwan minor share holders pursuing short term return on the investment. In 2011, Yageo management team intended to privatize the company so that management team can concentrate on long term performance and competition improvement. With the successful improvement, Yageo is expected to re-public the share into the global market to have the reasonable share price showing its actual corporate value. The case study points out that Taiwan unique invest environment on minor share holders for any other global Private Equity Fund reference. Furthermore, the study concludes that, in addition to concerning on share holders¡¦ rights and Taiwan local market development, the government should take more aggressive policy to support domestic company leading to be a global one because globalization is a must and survival solution to an enterprise.
