The political role of the patriarch in the contemporary Middle East : an examination of the Coptic Orthodox and Maronite traditions

McCallum, Fiona January 2006 (has links)
The objective of this study is to analyse the contemporary political role of Christianity in the Middle East. This will be achieved by focusing on the office of the patriarch. In most of the Eastern Christian churches, the patriarch is widely accepted as the spiritual head of the community and, throughout the centuries, this authority has often been translated into temporal power. Although other communal actors have challenged the dominant position of the patriarch, this dual role as spiritual and civil leader provides resources which can be used to strengthen the claim to be the political representative at the expense of lay rivals. The case studies selected for this project - the Coptic Orthodox and the Maronite churches - share several key characteristics. Firstly, both evoke a distinct identity on the basis of faith yet are directly linked to a specific homeland - Egypt and Lebanon respectively. In contrast to spiritual leaders of communities which are not concentrated in one particular country, the Coptic Orthodox and Maronite patriarchs have the potential to become involved in national affairs if desired. Secondly, both communities have pressing if different concerns as indigenous Christians in a turbulent regional environment dominated by another religion - Islam. The vast majority of these relate to the position of the community in the homeland. Thirdly, both communities have recently experienced widespread expansion outside the traditional territory in the Middle East. This allows an examination of the impact this growth has had on both the church and community at home and abroad. Fourthly, since becoming the head of each church, Patriarch Shenouda III, Coptic Orthodox Patriarch of Alexandria and all Africa and Patriarch Nasrallah Boutros Sfeir, Patriarch of Antioch and all the East of the Maronites, have proven to be charismatic and influential figures in church and national affairs. They have clearly played significant parts in relations between the community and state in the decades since their election to office. Finally, the two case studies have been selected as they best represent the potential of Christian communities to have a political role in this region. While the Copts constitute only a small proportion (5-10% depending on the identity of the source) of the Egyptian population, they are still the largest Christian community in the Middle East, numbering around 5-6 million. In contrast, the Maronites are a small community in terms of size. It is estimated that there are no more than 600,000 Maronites in Lebanon. Yet within Lebanon, they still make up over 20% of the population, offering them a chance to have a significant impact on national affairs. This study proposes that the patriarch exercises a political role because of his position as the head of the community. The authority and tradition of the office is constantly invoked to reinforce this position. In the contemporary period, this can be attributed to the desire to fill the leadership vacuum which exists amongst Christians in the Middle East.

O patriarca e o filho das entranhas: análise das relações de parentesco e convivência no ciclo abraâmico / The patriarc and the son of guts: analysis of parentage relationship and living in the Abrahamic cycle

Paiva, Anderson Gomes de 17 September 2009 (has links)
This research aims to present an analysis of the patrilineal principles in the Patriarchal narratives of the Book of Genesis. Our goal is to demonstrate how these set of principles mold important aspects of the Patriarchal family and clan and the ancient Israelite society as well , and also how it find expression in the world view of the various writers of the Scriptures. We also emphasize relevant aspects such as the succession process in the extended family and the blessing that confirms the successor in his privileged position.

Literary and theological analysis of this sense of perícope demonstrates very patriarchal reports. The goal of this dissertation is to do this analysis, especially demonstrating his "literary movement" or, as it is appropriate to say, his "literary beauty". This research takes the theological and ethi-cal considerations that relates with the other patriarchal traditions of Genesis. It is the study of Genesis 18.1 15 for his literary position in all the patriarchal ac-counts and especially with regard to Abraham. It is in half his life narrated in the text. Until that time, exposed in the text, he just waited for the fulfillment of promises, but nothing actu-ally happened. The end of life approaches with the accumulation of years. When least expec-ted the old promises, behold, the Lord, your God, appears and all is happening. The text is a moment of great expressiveness and narrative raises ethical perspective, using a sign lan-guage. The fundamental hypothesis is the centrality of literary text and its gestural expressi-veness that value the character Abraham, the other cited characters and their actions. The fundamental methodological theoretical aspect was used to read the text careful-ly, synchronous to its movement, always from the grammatical forms and guessing what the fundamental hypothesis suggested its expressiveness. She was always outstanding. The literary analysis of this short text leads to all the patriarchal narratives, especially Abraham cycle as part of the written traditions of Israel identity founders. The gestures of the same characters, often not valued in a theological analysis, are the expression of the beauty of this text. The three mysterious figures visiting the elderly Patriarch leave the divine mark of fulfilment of promises and assurance of joy that the birth of Isaac symbolizes / O texto de Gênesis 18,1 15 é importante dentro do ciclo de Abraão.

The Patriarchs: A Biographical Approach to the History of Australian Lutheran Schooling 1839 - 1919

Richard Hauser Unknown Date (has links)
This is a thesis about Lutherans and their schools in Australia. There have been Lutheran schools in Australia for more than 170 years. The first three schools were established in 1839. Currently there are eighty-three Lutheran schools with total enrolments of approximately 37 000 students. In the intervening period there have been two great waves of development. The first began with the first schools in 1839 and reached its climax at the end of the nineteenth century before the advent of state schools and the anti-German sentiment of the Great War caused a period of decline. The second wave, fuelled by government funding and some disillusionment with state schools, gathered its momentum in the last half of the twentieth century and is still in full flow. This thesis deals with the first wave, the eighty years of Lutheran schooling history from 1839 to 1919. It is an exercise in educational historiography and takes a biographical approach. According to its title it focuses on the lives and roles of the male leaders who dominated the church’s educational endeavours during this period. The subjects of the eight biographies are chosen to be representative of regions, eras and issues. They are: August Kavel, the founder of Australian Lutheranism and its schooling system; Daniel Fritzsche, the first Lutheran tertiary educator; Wilhelm Boehm, founder of the Hahndorf Academy in South Australia; Rudolph Ey, a Lutheran pastor and teacher in South Australia; Theodor Langebecker, a Queensland Lutheran pastor and educator; Carl Krichauff, a Lutheran teacher and journalist; Wilhelm Peters, the founder of Concordia College in Adelaide; Georg Leidig, the founder of Immanuel College in Adelaide. The main themes pertaining to Lutheran schooling which the thesis explores are: relations between church and state; relations between schools and the church; schools adjusting to mainstream educational realities; preservation of distinctive traits; regional contrasts; teacher formation and educational standards; American influences; German roots. As a thesis this history attempts to establish, by means of a number of biographies and the exploration of various themes, the answer to a basic question: what were the main events, issues, personalities and forces which impinged on Lutheran schooling in its first eighty years in Australia and how did they contribute to its unique character?
