Určení zdrojů Pb v malém povodí pomocí Pb isotopů / Determination of Pb sources in small catchment using Pb isotopes.

Krajíčková, Michaela January 2016 (has links)
The contents and isotopic composition of lead (Pb) were studied in a small forested catchment Lesní potok. The catchment is located 30 km southeast from Prague near Jevany. Monitoring inputs and outputs in GEOMON, a network of small forested catchments in the territory of the Czech Republic, has been coordinated by the Czech Geological Survey since 1994. It was analyzed litter of spruce and beech, collected between 2013 and 2014, and an archival sample litter of spruce from 1997. Lead in soil was studied at two profiles cambisols in each diagnostic horizons. Samples of profile LP 38 were collected in 2005, the LP 39 a year later. Surface water and bulk precipitation were sampled monthly for one hydrological year 2013. The ICP-MS method was used to determine the concentration and isotope ratios of lead. To determine of sources Pb were used isotope ratios 206 Pb/207 Pb and 208 Pb/206 Pb. In spruce litter (3,87 mg.kg-1 ) was measured average Pb concentration higher than beech (0,98 mg.kg-1 ). Topsoil horizons contain elevated concentrations of Pb (up to 100,70 mg.kg-1 ) decreasing towards the deeper horizons. The Pb concentration in the soil was 61,28 mg.kg-1 . Bulk precipitation in with average Pb concentrations206 Pb/207 Pb = 0.87 µg.l-1 contained more Pb than surface water 206 Pb/207 Pb = 0.50 µg.l-1 ....

This study aimed to use of trace elements contents and isotopic analysis of Pb (204Pb, 206Pb, 207Pb, 208Pb) as tools to characterize the pollution of the Sepetiba Bay, Rio de Janeiro. Sampling of surface bottom sediments were carried out in three campaigns in November 2010, in the west sector of the Sepetiba Bay - RJ. The sampling grid is composed of 66 samples (BSEP 001 to BSEP 066) collected with Van Veen - bottom grab. The pre-processing of the samples occurred in the Geological Laboratory Sample Preparation, Department of Geology of the Rio de Janeiro State University. The partial digestion of sediments samples (< 0072 mm) to obtain the trace elements partial content (Ag, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Li, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sr, U, Zn) and Pb isotope (leaching) was performed at the Laboratory of Analytical Geochemistry of the Geosciences Institute at UNICAMP and the reading was performed by ICP-MS. The analysis of the total concentrations of trace elements (including, Hg) and Pb isotopes (total dissolution) were performed in the laboratory Actlabs (Ontario, Canada) by ICP Varian Vista. The isotopic readings were taken only in samples with partial Pb concentrations above 0,5 g/g, a total of 21 stations. It was found that the existence of an enrichment of trace elements in the west sector of the Sepetiba Bay. The mean total content of Ag (0,4 g/g), Cd (0,76 g/g), Cu (62,59 g/g), Li (43,29 g/g), Ni (16,65 g/g), Pb (20,08 g/g), Sr (389,64 g/g) and Zn (184,82 g/g) exceeded the recommended limits or natural values. This may reflect the anthropogenic influence in the region, mainly related to the activity of dredging and the permanence of waste ore off the mining company Inga, on the Madeira island. The distribution maps of the concentration of trace metals highlighted the presence of multiple sites of deposition along the west sector of Sepetiba Bay, with emphasis on the region between the central west of the Itacuruça Island and the mainland; Marambaia Bay and Pombeba Tip, and the west portion of Marambaia Bay. 206Pb/207Pb isotope ratios in the study area ranged from 1,163 to 1,259 for total dissolution and 1,1749 to 1,1877 for leaching technique values considered as a signature of postindustrial or sediments compared to the signature of gasoline. Still on the leaching technique, it is emphasized that the surface sediments of the west sector (206Pb/207Pb: 1,1789) from Sepetiba Bay presented a signature uniform and less radiogenic than the east sector (206Pb/207Pb: 1,2373 and 1,211) of this bay. Through the Pb isotopic signature found in this region is possible to highlight that there is minimal contribution of ocean water for this system, however, the intense internal circulation of the waters of the bay allows the homogenization of these. The use of these types of tools in environmental monitoring of the area proved to be very efficient, it is important to continue this research to assist in implementing a management plan for the site.

Geochemické a izotopové datování povodňových sedimentů / Geochemical and isotopic dating of floodplain sediments

Nováková, Tereza January 2014 (has links)
River systems are the most widespread sedimentary environment in many European countries and can be hence used for study of historical development of contamination and for evaluation of the anthropogenic impact influence at the local or regional level. The study of river sediments, however, is complicated by changes of channel morphology and sedimentation dynamics and redeposition of old sediments, whether caused naturally (flood events) or by human impact (land use changes or building of water management structures), which leads to deposition of various sedimentary facies. Identification of sedimentary facies within floodplain fill is hence necessary - character (lithology) of deposited facies influences the spatial distribution of pollutants within floodplains. Suitable sampling sites strategy and chemostratigraphic correlations of depth profiles guarantee a correct interpretation of obtained data. However, in many countries, there are still no legislative tools or universal methodology for contamination assessment respecting natural variability of sedimentary records. Regional contamination during the last centuries and identification of local pollution sources of risk elements (Pb , Zn , Cu , ...) and magnetic particles have been studied in the sediments of the Morava River, in the area between...

Whole-Rock Lead-Lead Systematics and Major Element Analyses on the 1.85 GA. FLIN FLON Paleosol, Manitoba, Canada: Implications for Uranium Mobility.

Valencia, Federico Arturo 02 December 2011 (has links)
The 1.85 Ga Flin Flon paleosol located in Flin Flon, Manitoba, Canada, is studied with the purpose of determining the timing and geochemical trend of uranium migration. Radiometric minimum ages of sediments and paleosols indicates the presence of a post-depositional event, these ages are bracketed by the Trans-Hudson orogeny event (2155–1750 Ma) which resulted in the alteration of κ(Th/U) and µ(U/Pb) ratios by exposing volcanics to the atmosphere and instigating the mobilization of U. The profile shows that the Missi sediments lost Uby 84% average relative to corrected average upper crust value. The upper paleosol gained U by 11% and the lower paleosol lost U by 17%, relative to least weathered parent volcanics. Upward addition of U within the paleosol is associated with metasomatism. Potential mineralization of uranium occurs downgradient of the Missi and paleosol contact.

Timing and Characterization of the Change in the Redox State of Uranium in Precambrian Surface Environments: A Proxy for the Oxidation State of the Atmosphere

Pollack, Gerald D. 08 December 2008 (has links)
The redox-sensitive geochemical behavior of uranium permits the use of Th/U ratios as a geochemical proxy for the oxidation state of the atmosphere and oceans during sedimentary processes. Due to the effects of post-depositional uranium mobility on Th/U ratios during events involving oxygenated fluids, direct measurements of Th/U ratios are often misleading, but the whole rock Pb isotope composition may be used to determine a sample¡¦s apparent time-integrated Th/U ratio (ƒÛa) and the timing associated with the onset of the U-Th-Pb geochemistry. Rare earth element (REE) concentrations were determined by isotope dilution mass spectrometry to evaluate the influence of multiple provenance components and potential mobility of Th, U, and Pb during post-depositional processes on the Th/U ratio. The Pb isotope compositions and REE concentrations were determined for six Paleoproterozoic sedimentary sequences, which were the focus of previous studies involving the timing of the rise of atmospheric oxygen. The Mount McRae Shale, Huronian Supergroup, and Zaonezhskaya Formation have been interpreted as experiencing post-depositional alteration (perhaps associated with orogenic events) due to Pb-Pb ages that are younger than the likely depositional age and observed fractionation of REE in chondrite normalized REE patterns and interelement REE ratios (e.g. La/Nd, La/Yb, Eu/Eu*). Similar geochemical proxies have been interpreted as sedimentary geochemical features of the Timeball Hill Formation, Hotazel Formation, and Sengoma Argillite Formation. This study of Paleoproterozoic sedimentary units constrains the onset of U-Th decoupling, most likely due to the onset of oxidative weathering conditions, began by 2.32 Ga, the latest.

Geodynamic Evolution of the Aegean Back-arc and its Implication for Associated Precious and Base Metal Mineralization

Wind, Sandra Christin 26 October 2023 (has links)
The exposed metamorphic core complexes in the Cyclades continental back-arc of southeast Greece host a range of base and precious metal deposits. Shallow crustal mineral deposits that formed since the late Miocene to active seafloor hydrothermal systems occur in the footwall and hanging wall of the major detachment systems and within all tectono-stratigraphic units. The carbonate-replacement, vein-type, intermediate-sulfidation epithermal, and skarn deposits tapped different sources of metals and fluids along the major low-angle detachment systems and steep normal faults. This study links the regional metallogenic diversity to fluid and crustal sources, within a framework of the evolving geodynamic context and complex basement structure. Over 30 mineral occurrences, from Lavrion of Attica on the Greek mainland across the Cycladic archipelago to Milos and Santorini on the active South Aegean volcanic arc, were investigated, encompassing ~40,000 km2 of the arc- to backarc system. Petrographic observations are combined with mineralogical, geochemical, and isotopic analyses (Pb, Sr, δ34S and δ18O) of galena (PbS) and ore-associated hydrothermal barite (BaSO4). New galena Pb isotope data complemented by Pb isotope data of galena from the literature exhibit a range of isotopic ratios, with a resolvable geologic pattern. Galena from deposits in the north-central Cyclades has low 206Pb/204Pb ≤18.84, while galena from the west Cyclades has higher 206Pb/204Pb ≥18.84. This distinct regional pattern is further supported by the Sr isotope signature of hydrothermal barite, with 87Sr/86Sr ≥0.711 in the north-central Cyclades and 87Sr/86Sr  ≤0.711 in the west Cyclades. When considered together with compiled Pb and Sr isotope data of potential source rocks, large-scale regional patterns in the isotopic signatures are recognized, suggesting two distinct sources of lead and strontium in the underlying basement of the core complexes. These two sources (Lower Cycladic Blueschist Nappe and Upper Cycladic Blueschist Nappe including the Cycladic Basement) correspond to known tectono-stratigraphic units of different provenance and age and help to correlate the basement over considerable distances, even where exposures are limited. Sulfur and oxygen isotope data of barite indicate variable contributions of sulfur from seawater and magmatic fluids among the range of deposit types. This indicates that different fluid generations evolved and tapped the basement, likely along the major detachment faults. The δ34S values of barite indicate that mineral deposits in the Cyclades can be clearly distinguished. Compiled whole-rock isotopic and geochemical data of the basement lithologies exhibit a broad dispersion. Miocene to recent mineralization in the Cyclades caused homogenization of the crustal sources and indicate regional lithological differences in the architecture of the exposed metamorphic core complexes. This thesis demonstrates that regional studies of the geochemical and isotopic composition of mineral deposits can provide additional constraints for the paleogeographic reconstruction of juxtaposed tectono-stratigraphic units across the Cyclades and other complex continental back-arc systems.
