Representations of Boundary Layer Cloudiness and Surface Wind Probability Distributions in Subtropical Marine Stratus and Stratocumulus Regions Yanping He 153 pages Directed by Dr. Robert E. Dickinson A simple low cloud cover scheme is developed for the subtropical marine stratus and stratocumulus (MSC) regions. It is based on a modified CIN concept named the Lower Troposphere Available Dry Inhibition Energy (ADIN). The e-folder time for the local change of ADIN is found to be approximately 6 to 7 hours. On monthly and longer timescales, local productions of ADIN are balanced by local destructions of ADIN within lower troposphere. Dynamical transport of environmental dry static energy and surface evaporation lead to the variations of cloud top radiative cooling, which is a linear function of low cloud cover. Data analysis suggests that total ADIN dynamical transport plays the most important role in determining the seasonal variations and spatial variations of low cloud amounts¡£ The new scheme produces realistic seasonal and spatial variations of both EECRA ship observation and satellite observations in all MSC regions. It explains 25% more covariance than that using Klein-Hartmann (KH) scheme for monthly ISCCP low cloud amount near the Peruvian and Canarian region during the period from 1985 to 1997£¬it better represents the relationship between ENSO index and low cloud cover variations near the Peruvian region. When implemented into NCAR CAM3.1, it systematically reduces the model biases in the summertime spatial variations of low cloud amount and downward solar radiation in the Peruvian, California, and Canarian regions. Model simulated summertime cloud liquid water path, large scale precipitation, and surface fluxes are also significantly changed. A single predictor named Lower troposphere available thermal inhibition energy (ATIN) is also shown to be more skillful than the lower tropospheric stability in diagnosing low cloud stratiform clouds in the monthly and seasonal timescales. On synoptic timescale, dynamical transport of available dry inhibition energy and surface evaporation are better correlated with marine low cloud amount variations than ATIN and lower troposphere stability. The influence of boundary layer clouds, ocean surface SST, and large scale divergence on the stochastic dynamics of local ocean surface winds are addressed using QuikSCAT and AIRS satellite observations and a simple conceptual model in the southeast Pacific. The ocean surface pressure gradient depends on both the boundary layer height and temperature inversion strength. Marine boundary clouds are diagnosed using the cloud cover scheme developed in Chapter 2. The model successfully reproduces the observed mean state, the standard deviation, and skewness of local surface wind speeds in the southeast Pacific.

Utilizando estrategias de estimação da função de densidade de probabilidade (fdp), são propostos dois metodos de processamento multiusuario que permitem recuperar os sinais transmitidos pela medida de similaridade de Kullback-Leibler entre a fdp dos sinais a saida do dispositivo de separação e um modelo parametrico que contem as caracteristicas dos sinais transmitidos. Alem desta medida de similaridade, são empregados diferentes metodos que garantem a descorrelação entre as estimativas das fontes de tal forma que os sinais recuperados sejam provenientes de diferentes fontes. E ainda realizada a analise de convergencia dos metodos e suas equivalencias com tecnicas classicas resultando em algumas importantes relações entre criterios cegos e supervisionados, tais como o criterio proposto e o criterio de maxima a posteriori. Estes novos metodos aliam a capacidade de recuperação da informação uma baixa complexidade computacional. A proposição de metodos baseados na estimativa da fdp permitiu a realização de um estudo sobre o impacto das estatisticas de ordem superior em algoritmos adaptativos para separação cega de fontes. A utilização da expansão da fdp em series ortonormais permite avaliar atraves dos cumulantes a dinamica de um processo de separação de fontes. Para tratar com problemas de comunicação digital e proposta uma nova serie ortonormal, desenvolvida em torno de uma função de densidade de probabilidade dada por um somatorio de gaussianas. Esta serie e utilizada para evidenciar as diferenças em relação ao desempenho em tempo real ao se reter mais estatisticas de ordem superior. Simulações computacionais são realizadas para evidenciar o desempenho das propostas frente a tecnicas conhecidas da literatura em varias situações de necessidade de alguma estrategia de recuperação de sinais / Abstract: This thesis is devoted to study blind source separation techniques applied to multiuser processing in digital communications. Using probability density function (pdf) estimation strategies, two multiuser processing methods are proposed. They aim for recovering transmitted signal by using the Kullback-Leibler similarity measure between the signals pdf and a parametric model that contains the signals characteristics. Besides the similarity measure, different methods are employed to guarantee the decorrelation of the sources estimates, providing that the recovered signals origin from different sources. The convergence analysis of the methods as well as their equivalences with classical techniques are presented, resulting on important relationships between blind and supervised criteria such as the proposal and the maximum a posteriori one. Those new methods have a good trade-off between the recovering ability and computational complexity. The proposal os pdf estimation-based methods had allowed the investigation on the impact of higher order statistics on adaptive algorithms for blind source separation. Using pdf orthonormal series expansion we are able to evaluate through cumulants the dynamics of a source separation process. To be able to deal with digital communication signals, a new orthonormal series expansion is proposed. Such expansion is developed in terms of a Gaussian mixture pdf. This new expansion is used to evaluate the differences in real time processing when we retain more higher order statistics. Experimental and numerical investigation of high viscosity oil-based multiphase flows

Multiphase flows are of great interest to a large variety of industries because flows of two or more immiscible liquids are encountered in a diverse range of processes and equipment. However, the advent of high viscosity oil requires more investigations to enhance good design of transportation system and forestall its inherent production difficulties. Experimental and numerical studies were conducted on water-sand, oil-water and oilwater- sand respectively in 1-in ID 5m long horizontal pipe. The densities of CYL680 and CYL1000 oils employed are 917 and 916.2kg/m3 while their viscosities are 1.830 and 3.149Pa.s @ 25oC respectively. The solid-phase concentration ranged from 2.15e-04 to 10%v/v with mean diameter of 150micron and material density of 2650kg/m3. Experimentally, the observed flow patterns are Water Assist Annular (WA-ANN), Dispersed Oil in Water (DOW/OF), Oil Plug in Water (OPW/OF) with oil film on the wall and Water Plug in Oil (WPO). These configurations were obtained through visualisation, trend and the probability density function (PDF) of pressure signals along with the statistical moments. Injection of water to assist high viscosity oil transport reduced the pressure gradient by an order of magnitude. No significant differences were found between the gradients of oil-water and oil-water-sand, however, increase in sand concentration led to increase in the pressure losses in oil-water-sand flow. Numerically, Water Assist Annular (WA-ANN), Dispersed Oil in Water (DOW/OF), Oil Plug in Water (OPW/OF) with oil film on the wall, and Water Plug in Oil (WPO) flow pattern were successfully obtained by imposing a concentric inlet condition at the inlet of the horizontal pipe coupled with a newly developed turbulent kinetic energy budget equation coded as user defined function which was hooked up to the turbulence models. These modifications aided satisfactory predictions.

Modelling income, wealth, and expenditure data by use of Econophysics

In the present paper, we identify several distributions from Physics and study their applicability to phenomena such as distribution of income, wealth, and expenditure. Firstly, we apply logistic distribution to these data and we find that it fits very well the annual data for the entire income interval including for upper income segment of population. Secondly, we apply Fermi-Dirac distribution to these data. We seek to explain possible correlations and analogies between economic systems and statistical thermodynamics systems. We try to explain their behaviour and properties when we correlate physical variables with macroeconomic aggregates and indicators. Then we draw some analogies between parameters of the Fermi-Dirac distribution and macroeconomic variables. Thirdly, as complex systems are modelled using polynomial distributions, we apply polynomials to the annual sets of data and we find that it fits very well also the entire income interval. Fourthly, we develop a new methodology to approach dynamically the income, wealth, and expenditure distribution similarly with dynamical complex systems. This methodology was applied to different time intervals consisting of consecutive years up to 35 years. Finally, we develop a mathematical model based on a Hamiltonian that maximises utility function applied to Ramsey model using Fermi-Dirac and polynomial utility functions. We find some theoretical connections with time preference theory. We apply these distributions to a large pool of data from countries with different levels of development, using different methods for calculation of income, wealth, and expenditure.

This master thesis was oriented to study of the development application possibilities in programming language ABAP in the information system mySAP. There were studied integration possibilities of SAP system with Adobe PDF forms and application MS Excel. Advantages and disadvantages of these two technologies were compared. The theoretical part of diploma thesis describes also the technology of SAP systems based on NetWeaver platform and the main product mySAP. The practical part describes a concrete business scenario of purchase order process where is also invoice verification list included. The result of the work is analysis, design and implementation of concrete solution for "invoice verification list" generating in SAP system. A development SAP VUT application was used for implementation and testing.

This thesis deals with the issue of preparation of final exams at the Faculty of Information Technology of Brno University of Technology. It describes the process of design and implementation of a web application that allows teachers to create and manage room schemes and terms of individual exams. An important part of the application is also the automatic placement of students in the rooms and the generation of individual exam assignments for printing based on the given template and the method of placement. The application provides students with a clear view of individual exam terms and details about them. The work will result in a functional and usable web application written in Java using the Spring and Angular frameworks.
