A kindred spirit : (1985) : for flute, bass clarinet, cello, guitar, percussion and piano [and tape]Schryer, Claude January 1989 (has links)
Research on the musical language as well as the technical realisation of the tape part to a kindred spirit, for ensemble and tape, was realised at the Electronic Music Studio of McGill University from September, 1984 to September, 1986. / The following excerpt from the programme note in the score summarizes the 'spirit' of the composition. / "The computer generated sounds on tape form a large body in which instrumental sounds float and from which they appear, like weeds oscillating on a sometimes calm and often turbulent sea of sound. / 'You're afraid, in the mirror, of the sea, in front of, you're afraid ... ' and 'searching, for a common pulse, to sustain, to carry on, searching ... ' are circular phrases in the text which reflect elements of both doubt and courage. Mourning that which can never return. Celebrating that which will always be with us."

The 10,000-Hour Threshold: Interviews with Successful PercussionistsHill, Colin J 01 January 2013 (has links)
Musicians are universally reliant on practice to improve and perfect their craft and there is substantial evidence that suggests mastery can only be achieved after 10,000 hours of practice early in life. This dissertation explores the validity of this theory as it pertains to master percussionists and examines their discoveries and recommendations as to how those 10,000 hours should best be spent. Research sources include selected published literature and personal interviews with thirty-six percussionists, conducted between 2010- 2013. The research is summarized in the following six sections: the 10,000-hour threshold; planning a practice session; warming up; learning new music; problem spots; and performance preparation. The primary goal of this dissertation is to detail the specific practice methods currently implemented by many of today’s most successful percussionists. This research should reveal the various ways success can be achieved in the practice room and help aspiring and accomplished professionals alike explore and integrate new practice methods and philosophies into their own careers and the careers of their students.

”Hur 17 ska jag öva?” : En studie om olika tillvägagångssätt för övning för slagverkare / How should I practice? : A study of various learning methods for percussionistsBengtsson, Henrik January 2015 (has links)
The aim of this study is to explore how some selected approaches of learning, mediated by leading percussionist and percussion teachers, is used by and works for one students rehearsal of a musical work. These three approaches were used when practicing the Concerto for Marimba and Strings of Emanuel Sejourné. Audio recordings and log book was the basis for the analysis of what worked well for me in my own practice and how I experienced the different methods during exercise. The result shows that above all enjoyment factor is a contributor to a successful practicing. Other important factors reported are the importance of knowledge and the music before you start to practice and the importance of preventively practicing as a real concert. At the end, the results of the study is discussed in relation to the presented literature and previous research in the subject.

Melodispel på ostämda slagverksinstrument och utvecklande av tamburinspelet i svensk folkmusik : En självobservation av processen att lära sig nya tekniker / Melodies on untuned percussion instruments and development of the tambourine playing in swedish traditional music : A self-observation of the process of learning new techniquesJohansson, Henrik January 2014 (has links)
This work is about how I as a folk music percussionist through self-observation can learn a special playing technique for inducing melodies on untuned percussion instruments with a focus on the tambourine and how this can simulate a full drum kit with the same playing technique. The aim was to examine whether as a percussionist is able to go from the role as an accompaniment musician and instead be seen as a melody player and to see how to exploit tambourines full capacity to find new ways of playing and new opportunities. To make this work, and observing myself in my learning process, I have used the video recording, audio recording and continuous logbook writing. My theoretical basis of this work is master-learning and it is from that theory I have analysed my data material. In the result, I present the process when I, in relation to traditional music genre, have taught myself to play melodies on untuned percussion instruments and to simulate the whole drum kit with only one tambourine. I have clearly demonstrated the techniques I have practiced in order to succeed. This result also reveals that there has been a great advantage to already have experience from other percussion instruments and that I have had two different masters during the working process, the traditional music genre and the traditional music percussionist, Petter Berndalen.

iLatin jazz! : a syncretic journey from Spain, Cuba, the United States and backGonzalez, Roger Oriol January 2009 (has links)
The creative work, ¡Latin Jazz! is a 50 minute radio documentary to be broadcast on ABC Classic FM. It looks at the evolution of Latin jazz from Spain, Cuba and the United States. It examines the social effects on the style and specifically on the syncretic movement between the countries. The documentary traces my travel to Madrid, Spain and looks at Latin jazz through a deconstruction of the style, musical examples and interviews with prominent artists. Artists interviewed were Chano Domínguez, a Spanish flamenco jazz pianist, Bobby Martínez an American saxophonist, Alain Pérez a Cuban bassist and Pepe Rivero a Cuban pianist. The exegesis supports the radio documentary by examining the style in more depth, and is broken into three main sections. First it traces the historical relationship that occurred through the Ida y Vuelta (To and Fro), the similarities and influences through the habanera, the decíma and the religion of Santería. This is followed by specific musical elements within Latin jazz such as instrumentation, clave, harmony and improvisation, whilst the third section looks at the influences of the new syncretic movement back to Spain.
