The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of unilateral and bilateral plyometric exercise on peak power and jumping performance during different stages of a 12-week training and detraining in women. Forty-nine untrained but physically active female college students were randomly assigned to 1 of × groups: unilateral plyometric group (n = 16), bilateral plyometric group (BLE; n = 18), and a control group (n = 15). Peak power and jumping ability were assessed by means of the alternate leg tests (10-second Wingate test and 5 alternate leg bounds), bilateral leg test (countermovement jump [CMJ]) and unilateral leg test (unilateral CMJ). Performance indicators were measured pretraining, midtraining, posttraining, and detraining. Differences between dependent variables were assessed with a × × 4 (group × time) repeated analysis of variance with Tukey's post hoc test applied where appropriate. Effect size was calculated to determine the magnitude of significant differences between the researched parameters. Only the unilateral plyometric training produced significant (p < 0.05) improvement in all tests from pretraining to midtraining, but there was no significant (p < 0.05) increase in performance indicators from midtraining to posttraining. The BLE group significantly (p < 0.05) improved in all tests from pretraining to posttraining and did not significantly (p > 0.05) decrease power and jumping ability in all tests during detraining. These results suggest that unilateral plyometric exercises produce power and jumping performance during a shorter period when compared to bilateral plyometric exercises but achieved performance gains last longer after bilateral plyometric training. Practitioners should consider the inclusion of both unilateral and bilateral modes of plyometric exercise to elicit rapid improvements and guard against detraining.

Leaders and the strategies they employ to enhance employee performance are essential to retaining an organization's competitive advantage. The purpose of this multiple case study was to explore the strategies used by supply chain management managers to improve employee performance in the workplace. The conceptual framework for this study combined elements from Vroom's expectancy theory of motivation, Adams's equity theory of motivation and leadership, and transformational leadership theories. Participants were selected via the purposeful sampling of 6 successful supply chain managers in the District of Columbia's metropolitan area. Data were obtained using semistructured face-to-face interviews, interview notes, transcripts, and a thorough review and analysis of organizational documents. Data were analyzed using Yin's 5-step approach to data analysis. Four themes were identified: strategies associated with enhancing employee performance with an emphasis on training, barriers that prevented leadership from achieving performance improvement objectives, tools leaders used to measure employee performance and the leadership style of the manager with an emphasis on the use of the participative leadership style. The findings of this study may contribute to social change by providing supply chain managers with resources required to enhance overall employee performance in the workplace, which in turn may lead to increased overall organizational productivity, helping to ensure the prosperity of the organizational leaders, employees, their families, the surrounding communities, and the local economy.

Over the past 2 decades, mindfulness-based interventions (MBI) in sport have grown from a niche application for performance excellence into a mainstream intervention for performance enhancement and well-being among athletes. The Mindfulness Meditation Training for Sport 2.0 intervention has contributed to the growth through its initial empirical support. Open trials and feasibility studies have shown encouraging results in several student-athlete populations. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of a MBI in sport, MMTS 2.0, through the lens of a mixed methods quasi-experimental design examining specific psychometric correlates related with performance enhancement and well-being and a sport-specific outcome measure. The aim is to provide a more in-depth understanding of student-athletes’ experience completing Mindfulness Meditation for Sport 2.0 (MMTS) and demonstrate the opportunity for performance enhancement and holistic development through a MBI in sport. Participants were 60 student-athletes from two Division III collegiate men’s soccer teams who competed a sport-specific performance marker and seven psychometric measures at two time points (pre-intervention and post-intervention). One team (n=30) was selected as the experimental group who received the MMTS 2.0 intervention, and another team (n=30) was selected as the control group (no-treatment). In contrast to the hypothesis, the experimental group showed no significant difference in the performance marker and the seven psychometric measures when compared to the control group. Though, exploratory additions showed significant improvement for the MTMS 2.0 experimental group in self-compassion from pre-intervention to post-intervention, while no change was found with the control group. The study offers promising results that indicate the MMTS 2.0 increase student-athletes scores of self-compassion. While the statistical findings are limited, the qualitative responses from the participants (n=9) suggest that the MMTS 2.0 had a strong impact on their performance as a student and athlete. These findings provide insight into how the delivery of mindfulness and self-compassion skills in a time-limited environment help male athletes combat competition distress. Recommendations for new mindfulness and self-compassion scales to capture impact of a time-limited intervention are offered.

The Impact of a Mental Skills Training Program for Enhanced Performance on a Varsity Intercollegiate Volleyball Team: A Case Study Program Evaluation of an Educational InterventionReese, Robert C. Jr. 13 December 2005 (has links)
The purpose of this case study was to answer 5 primary questions in order to determine the impact (efficacy, efficiency, and value) of the educational intervention known as the mental skills training program (MSTP) as implemented with an NCAA Division I volleyball team. The primary evaluation questions are (1) Was individual and/or team performance enhanced during the season? (2) How did the intervention of the MSTP impact individual and team mental toughness? (3) How did the intervention of the MSTP impact team communication and team chemistry? (4) How did the coaches and student-athletes view the investment of time and effort (value/worth)? (5) Was the program delivered effectively and efficiently?
The core mental skills that comprise the MSTP are goal setting, visualization, feelazation, energy management, and effective thinking which when integrated encourage mental toughness. The program evaluation contains an instructional design (ID) that incorporated a flexible curriculum to meet the weekly needs of the team. A modified Gerlach and Ely (1980) ID model is utilized to direct the design process and also as a prescriptive evaluation guide.
The evaluation utilized quantitative instruments including surveys, questionnaires, and assessments of the effectiveness and efficiency of delivery by the mental skills trainer. Qualitative data includes interviews and field notes consisting of observations, member checks, and peer debriefing.
The results of the data indicate individual performance and mental toughness were enhanced; team performance and mental toughness may have been improved. Team chemistry was enhanced while team communication was not. The program was considered valuable and worthwhile and was delivered effectively and efficiently. The decision components of the program yielded an 84.69% positive program evaluation rating.
In discussion of these results, team communication may be improved with a greater emphasis on teambuilding early in the program. Gains in mental toughness exceeded expectations, and a foothold has been established for future research in this area. Regarding team performance, expanding categories in survey instruments may yield a more positive evaluation. Finally, program evaluation may provide a viable research vehicle for applied sport psychology to demonstrate the efficacy of mental skills training for performance enhancement. / Ph. D.

enhance the performance of the tracking property for a class of nonlinear and dynamic stochastic systems subjected to non-Gaussian
noises. Although the existing standard PI controller can be used
to obtain the basic tracking of the systems, the desired tracking
performance of the stochastic systems is difficult to achieve due
to the random noises. To improve the tracking performance, an enhanced performance loop is constructed using the EKF-based state
estimates without changing the existing closed loop with a PI controller. Meanwhile, the gain of the enhanced performance loop can
be obtained based upon the entropy optimization of the tracking
error. In addition, the stability of the closed loop system is analyzed in the mean-square sense. The simulation results are given

Performance impact of programmer-inserted Data Prefetches for irregular access patterns with a case study of FMM VList algorithmTondon, Abhishek 22 April 2014 (has links)
Data Prefetching is a well-known technique to speed up applications wherein hardware prefetchers or compilers speculatively prefetch data into caches closer to the processor to ensure it’s readily available when the processor demands it. Since incorrect speculation leads to prefetching useless data which, in turn, results in wasting memory bandwidth and polluting caches, prefetch mechanisms are usually conservative and prefetch on spotting fairly regular access patterns only. This gives the programmer with a knowledge of application, an opportunity to insert fine-grain software prefetches in the code to clinically prefetch the data that is certain to be demanded but whose access pattern is not too obvious for hardware prefetchers or compiler to detect.
In this study, the author demonstrates the performance improvement obtained by such programmer-inserted prefetches with the case study of an FMM (Fast Multipole Method) VList application kernel run with several different configurations. The VList computation requires computing the Hadamard product of matrices. However, the way each node of the octree is stored in the memory, leads to indirect accessing of elements where memory accesses themselves are not sequential but the pointers pointing to those memory locations are still stored sequentially. Since compilers do not insert prefetches for indirect accesses, and to hardware, the access pattern appears random, programmer-inserted prefetching is the only solution for such a case. The author demonstrates the performance gain obtained by employing different prefetching choices in terms of what all structures in the code to prefetch and which level of cache to prefetch those to and also presents an analysis of the impact of different configuration parameters on performance gain. The author shows that there are several prefetching combinations which always bring performance gain without ever hurting the performance, and also identifies prefetching to L1 cache and prefetching all data structures in question, as the best prefetching recommendation for this application kernel. It is shown that this one combination gets the highest performance gain for most run configurations and an average performance gain of 10.14% across all run configurations. / text
