This thesis examines, documents, and evaluates the process of designing the lighting for a production of Spring Awakening, produced by Temple University's Department of Theater. I will discuss the initial design process, the execution of the design, and evaluate the finished design. / Theater

This is an architectural thesis for the creation of stories. Through the collection of memories and ideas, stories are discovered and then assembled to form objects of intent. The proposed design is also a hybrid - a hybrid of spaces, both formal and mundane, structured to form a unique body that is an extension of city from which it originated. The architectural project, located at the Dupont Circle North Metro exit in Washington, DC, houses performance, teaching and office space for the Speakeasy DC organization. The collection of spaces delineated in this design was inspired by characteristics of storytelling, structure and sound, and by the specific nature of the site. These spaces were then assembled to create a places of discovery (in markets and offices), reflection (in libraries and workrooms), and performance (in auditoriums and cafes). / Master of Architecture

Thesis (MMus (Music))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009. / The Cape Performing Arts Board (CAPAB) was one of four regional government-funded councils established in 1963, with the mandate to promote and develop the Western performing art forms (opera, ballet, music and drama) in the four provinces of the Republic of South Africa. Although the Board, and more specifically, the Music Department, made a significant contribution to the development of the performing arts in the Cape Province over more than three decades, its history remains largely undocumented. Therefore, the main objective of this study is to provide an account of CAPAB’s music activities against an outline of the organisation’s general history. Included is a discussion of the Music Department’s most significant contributions: the Department’s role as an impresario; the extensive music education programmes presented in schools and rural areas; the promotion of home-grown talent and the major part played by CAPAB’s orchestra (1971-97) in facilitating the development of the Western performing arts in the Western, Eastern and Northern Cape. Inextricably linked to these topics are a range of both positive and negative factors which influenced the development of the performing arts in this context. These include the effects of the Apartheid government’s policies on the development of the arts; the Board’s reliance on, and claim to state funding; the controversial history of CAPAB’s state-of-the-art Nico Malan Theatre Complex; the Board’s attempts to rectify imbalances of the period prior to the political transformation in the early 1990s and the events leading to a new dispensation for the performing arts in a democratic South Africa. Since CAPAB’s demise in 1998, sufficient time has elapsed to allow for a more objective evaluation of its role. Therefore, this study concludes with a brief assessment of the legacy of the CAPAB’s 35-year existence, summarising its effect on classical music in South Africa as we experience it today.

El proyecto consiste en el diseño de una Escuela de Artes Escénicas en el distrito de Independencia. Este posee una zona educativa, zona de difusión y espacios de recreación. Tiene como objetivo principal generar un estímulo al artista a través de la forma del espacio arquitectónico, las interrelaciones visuales, el color, la relación y organización espacial que permita lograr un entorno más didáctico para lograr la interacción del artista con el espacio y así este lo transforme en su escenario. Asimismo, se encuentra en una zona privilegiada con vías importantes que logran conectar al proyecto con otros distritos cercanos, además de contar con cercanía a la zona residencial, identidades educativas y comerciales, lo cual convierte al proyecto en un punto importante en su entorno, además de lograr la inclusión de todos los usuarios debido a la creación de plazas y áreas libres. / The project consists of the design of a Performing Arts School in the district of Independencia. This has an educational area, area of diffusion and recreation spaces. Its main objective is to generate a stimulus to the artist through the form of architectural space, visual interrelations, color, relationship and spatial organization to achieve a more didactic environment to achieve the interaction of the artist with space and so this transform in your scenario. It is also located in a privileged area with important roads that connect the project with other nearby districts, in addition to having proximity to the residential area, educational and commercial identities, which makes the project an important point in its surroundings, as well to achieve the inclusion of all users due to the creation of places and free areas. / Tesis
