Abstract : The objective of this work was to evaluate both origin and diagenesis of organic matter of Peri Lake bottom sediments. Thus, two cores were collected with P.V.C. tubes of 25 mm of diameter and 1 m in length. These cores were sectioned at every 3 cm interval along the first 15 cm, and at every 5 cm interval from 15 cm to the end of each core. Then, lipids, soluble proteins, phaeopigments, C, N, and H present in these intervais were analysed. In order to better understand the obtained results, some ratios were used, such as: C/N, H/C, ratios between the concentrations of terrigenous and aquatic carboxylic acids (RTA), and Carbon Preference Indexes (CPI). The results of these ratios showed that from the sediment-water interface to about 45 cm in depth, the organic matter origin remains practically unaffected, being mainly aquatic (C/N£10 and RTA < 1). Below 45 cm, the organic matter amount is lower, having both aquatic and terrigenous origins (C/N > 10 and RTA > 1). Moreover, Peri Lake bottom sediment can be classified as gyttza that is an organic sediment. Several biomarkers were identified, as those of terrigenous plants (fatty acids C >22) and those of microbial action (acids C15 iso and anteiso, and hydroxy acids). As in many other sediments cited in previous works, the Peri Lake sediments showed a predominance of fatty acids with an even number of carbon, and a bimodal distribution with two maxima between C14 and C18, and C24 and C28. Regarding long chain fatty acids, in spite of an alteration in its concentration with depth, there is not any significant change in distribution among them since there is no changing at CPI values (about 5,5). The phaeopigment concentration ranges from 12 mg/g to 178 mg/g, whereas the soluble protein concentration ranges from 1 mg/g to 18 mg/g. Another important point is the difference of lipids concentration that exists between the two cores, which may be caused by the difference of grain size between the two sites where the sediment cores were collected.
