PERÍMETRO E ÁREA: UMA ENGENHARIA DIDÁTICA UTILIZANDO O GEOGEBRA SOB O OLHAR DAS REPRESENTAÇÕES SEMIÓTICAS / PERIMETER AND AREA: A DIDACTIC ENGINEERING USING GEOGEBRA UNDER THE VIEW OF SEMIOTIC REPRESENTATIONS

Assumpção, Paula Gabrieli Santos de 24 August 2015 (has links)
This paper aims answering the following question: Can a dynamic approach contribute to the geometry s teaching and learning process for 7th grade students in the fundamental school, concerning the concepts of perimeter and polygons area, taking into consideration the theory of semiotic representation records? In order to do this, it was elaborated, implemented and evaluated a sequence of activities in the GeoGebra software from the theoretical subsides found in the semiotic representation records theory, according to Duval (2003, 2005, 2009, 2011, 2012a, 2012b, 2013). The didactic experiment was accomplished with two groups of 7th grade students from fundamental school in a public state school in the city of Toropi, RS. This research was organized following the guidelines of the didactic engineering methodology, according to Artigue (1996). Based on the analysis of results when putting into practice the sequence of activities it was verified the students could learn the concepts of perimeter and polygons area in a dynamic environment under the view of the semiotic representation records theory. It was also recognized as fundamental to develop the steps in the didactic engineering the considerations brought by this theory. Besides, it was considered satisfactory the functionalities of the GeoGebra software since it was an intermediary tool, helping in the process of seeing the subjects of research, when solving activities with emphasis in image records. It was seen in the development of activities an improvement of their visual processes in relation to the heuristic examination of the geometrical figures. Allowing them a better perception of the way they elucidate the geometric representations involved.

Three Essays on Demographic Changes and International Trade

Zhang, Qi January 2015 (has links)
Chapter 1: A Population Aging Analysis for Canada Using the National Transfer Accounts Approach: This analysis develops a new data set for Canada using an accounting methodology called National Transfer Accounts (NTA). NTA permits building an accounting system that introduces age into national accounts. NTA is consistent with the conventional national accounts and allows the estimation of lifecycle patterns for labour income and consumption from private and public sources. It also allows the calculation of per capita and aggregate lifecycle deficits (LCD) or surpluses (LCS) in an economy. In this chapter we calculate Canada’s per capita and aggregate LCD for 2006. Using demographic projections for the next five decades, we present the aggregate LCD in Canada for the period 2006 to 2056 assuming a constant per capital LCD during this time horizon. The projection results show that labour income needs to increase rapidly or consumption needs to be cut significantly to compensate for the pressure on the aggregate lifecycle deficit as a result of population aging. Chapter 2: An Overlapping Generations Computable General Equilibrium (OLG-CGE) Model with Age-dependent Rates of Time Preference: This analysis develops a methodology to introduce an age-dependent rate of time preference to calibrate an OLG-CGE model with per capita age profile consumption path derived from the NTA framework of Chapter 1. The results show that the economic impact from an aging population will be significant. The living standard will decline by 15% from the present to 2050 and decline by 20% by the year 2105. To reduce such a decline, the Canadian government may introduce policies that could encourage labour force participation. We analyze the impact of: a) an increase in the general labour force participation rate for age 20 to 64; b) an increase in the labour force participation rate for workers aged 50 to 64; c) late retirement. Our results suggest that maintaining the current standard of living will be extremely difficult after 2026. Nevertheless, this would help reduce the economic pressure from population aging. Chapter 3: 9/11 Security Measures and North American Security Perimeter: A Computable General Equilibrium Analysis: The objective of this analysis is to assess the impact of the North American Security Perimeter (NASP) on both the Canadian and the U.S. economies. The NASP is a change in Canada-U.S. security paradigm that would allow the liberalization of the post 9/11 security measures at the Canada-U.S. border. This study applies a multi-sector and multi-region general equilibrium model together with econometric analysis. After simulating the NASP, Canada’s capital market was found to become more attractive. Under the NASP, the welfare of Canada is estimated to increase by $19 billion or 1.8% of GDP, and that of the U.S. is estimated to increase by $32 billion or 0.3% of GDP.

Cross Diffusion and Nonlocal Interaction: Some Results on Energy Functionals and PDE Systems

Berendsen, Judith 02 June 2020 (has links)
In this thesis we present some results on cross-diffusion and nonlocal interaction. In the first part we study a PDE model for two diffusing species interacting by local size exclusion and global attraction. This leads to a nonlinear degenerate cross-diffusion system, for which we provide a global existence result. The analysis is motivated by the formulation of the system as a formal gradient flow for an appropriate energy functional consisting of entropic terms as well as quadratic nonlocal terms. Key ingredients are entropy dissipation methods as well as the recently developed boundedness by entropy principle. Moreover, we investigate phase separation effects inherent in the cross-diffusion model by an analytical and numerical study of minimizers of the energy functional and their asymptotics to a previously studied case as the diffusivity tends to zero. Finally we briefly discuss coarsening dynamics in the system, which can be observed in numerical results and is motivated by rewriting the PDEs as a system of nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard equations. Proving the uniqueness of solutions to multi-species cross-diffusion systems is a difficult task in the general case, and very few results exist in this direction. In the second part of this thesis, we study a particular system with zero-flux boundary conditions for which the existence of a weak solution has been proven in [60]. Under additional assumptions on the value of the cross-diffusion coefficients, we are able to show the existence and uniqueness of nonnegative strong solutions. The proof of the existence relies on the use of an appropriate linearized problem and a fixed-point argument. In addition, a weak-strong stability result is obtained for this system in dimension one which also implies uniqueness of weak solutions. In the third part we focus on a class of integral functionals known as nonlocal perimeters. Intuitively, these functionals express a weighted interaction between a set and its complement. The weight is provided by a positive kernel K which might be singular. We show that these functionals are indeed perimeters in a generalised sense and we establish existence of minimisers for the corresponding Plateau’s problem. Also, when K is radial and strictly decreasing, we prove that halfspaces are minimisers if we prescribe “flat” boundary conditions. Furthermore, a Γ-convergence result is discussed. We study the limiting behaviour of the nonlocal perimeters associated with certain rescalings of a given kernel which might be singular in the origin but that have faster-than-L 1 decay at infinity and we show that the Γ-limit is the classical perimeter, up to a multiplicative constant that we give explicitly.

Asociación entre la frecuencia de consumo de bebidas alcohólicas y el perímetro abdominal en estudiantes de Medicina Humana en una Universidad Privada de Lima / Association between the frequency of consumption of alcoholic beverages and abdominal perimeter in students of Human Medicine in a Private University of Lima

Gonzales Leon, Jimena Lisseth, Huby Raffo, Isabella Maria, Lara Fernández, Adriana Alexandra, Samanez Pancorbo, Almendra Maria Delfina 07 October 2020 (has links)
Objective: To determine the association between the frequency of alcoholic drinks consumption and the abdominal perimeter in students of Human Medicine in a Private University of Lima. Methodology: Transversal study that included 200 students of Human Medicine, selected through a non-probabilistic sampling. A Poisson regression model was carried out to find the reasons for prevalence (RP) for the variables that in the bivariate analysis gave differences between groups or a p<0.10. Results: It was observed that there is no significant relationship between alcohol consumption and increase in abdominal circumference (p>0.05). However, it was shown that women consumed more ml of alcohol (p=0.05) and that this was not a risk factor for having an upper abdominal girth. No significant results were observed in the rest of the variables (p>0.05). Conclusions: Female students who consumed more ml of alcohol were less likely to have high AP, with a contrary reaction occurring in the male students studied. / Trabajo de investigación

Decentralized Control of Multiple UAVs for Perimeter and Target Surveillance

Kingston, Derek B. 31 July 2007 (has links) (PDF)
With the recent development of reliable autonomous technologies for small unmanned air vehicles (UAVs), the algorithms utilizing teams of these vehicles are becoming an increasingly important research area. Unfortunately, there is no unified framework into which all (or even most) cooperative control problems fall. Five factors that affect the development of cooperative control algorithms are objective coupling, communication, completeness, robustness, and efficiency. We classify cooperative control algorithms by these factors and then present three algorithms with application to target and perimeter surveillance and a method for decentralized algorithm design. The primary contributions of this research are the development and analysis of decentralized algorithms for perimeter and target surveillance. We pose the cooperative perimeter surveillance problem and offer a decentralized solution that accounts for perimeter growth (expanding or contracting) and insertion/deletion of team members. By identifying and sharing the critical coordination information and by exploiting the known communication topology, only a small communication range is required for accurate performance. Convergence of the algorithm to the optimal configuration is proven to occur in finite-time. Simulation and hardware results are presented that demonstrate the applicability of the solution. For single target surveillance, a team of UAVs angularly spaced (i.e. in the splay state configuration) provides the best coverage of the target in a wide variety of circumstances. We propose a decentralized algorithm to achieve the splay state configuration for a team of UAVs tracking a moving target and derive the allowable bounds on target velocity to generate a feasible solution as well as show that, near equilibrium, the overall system is exponentially stable. Monte Carlo simulations indicate that the surveillance algorithm is asymptotically stable for arbitrary initial conditions. We conclude with high fidelity simulation and actual flight tests to show the applicability of the splay state controller to unmanned air systems.

Wildfire Modeling with Data Assimilation

Johnston, Andrew 14 December 2022 (has links)
Wildfire modeling is a complex, computationally costly endeavor, but with droughts worsening and fires burning across the western United States, obtaining accurate wildfire predictions is more important than ever. In this paper, we present a novel approach to wildfire modeling using data assimiliation. We model wildfire spread with a modification of the partial differential equation model described by Mandel et al. in their 2008 paper. Specifically, we replace some constant parameter values with geospatial functions of fuel type. We combine deep learning and remote sensing to obtain real-time data for the model and employ the Nelder-Mead method to recover optimal model parameters with data assimilation. We demonstrate the efficacy of this approach on computer-generated fires, as well as real fire data from the 2021 Dixie Fire in California. On generated fires, this approach resulted in an average Jaccard index of 0.996 between the predicted and actual fire perimeters and an average Kulczynski measure of 0.997. On data from the Dixie Fire, the average Jaccard index achieved was 0.48, and the average Kulczynski measure was 0.66.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Jose Messildo Viana Nunes.pdf: 23561485 bytes, checksum: a130d5923e185be386b6a24fcd281551 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2011-10-28 / This research treats the practice of the argumentation as teaching method, focusing the concepts of area perimeter of plane figures. Studies in national and international levels have already broached the subject, many times using the practice of the argumentation as method, not proposing, however, ways that demonstrate the functionality of that method. So this work answers the following question: in what measure the practice of the argumentation can present itself as method that contributes to the comprehension of concepts in mathematics taking as reference the case of the area and the perimeter of plane figures? To answer our question, we propose a didactic sequence modeled and analyzed with basis in the phases that compose the argumentative process, according to Toulmin (1996). The methodology of the study have been supported in Didactic Engineering purposes, the intervention have been effectuated with pupils at the fifth grade in Ensino Fundamental (students aged 10-11), using two argumentative institutions: the classroom and the informatics laboratory where we used the Geogebra software. The theoretical foundation have been based in speculative reflections by Toulmin (1996), in argumentative classification by Pedemonte (2002) and Cabassut (2005) and in the idea of argumentative convergence by Perelman and Olbrechts-Tyteca (2005). The analysis of the activities have evidenced that the practice of the argumentation contribute to the comprehension of the concepts of area and perimeter of plane figures, habilitating this practice as teaching method. The argumentative competences acquired by the pupils through the interactions with their classmates and the researchers about the subject allowed them have more autonomy to communicate and defend their ideas, respecting the opinion of the other classmates during the discussions, pay attention to the functionality and the possible validity of their argument, besides to learn specific symbols and language of mathematics / Esta pesquisa trata da prática da argumentação como método de ensino, focalizando os conceitos de área e perímetro de figuras planas.
