"Perl's of wisdom" : "Rabbi" Sam Perl, new models of acculturation, and the "in-between" Jew

Schottenstein, Allison Elizabeth 22 February 2012 (has links)
“‘Perl’s of Wisdom’: ‘Rabbi’ Sam Perl, New Models of Acculturation, and the ‘In-Between’ Jew” examines archival materials from the Dolph Briscoe Center for American History, The Brownsville Herald and El Heraldo de Brownsville to demonstrate how Sam Perl — an Eastern European Jewish immigrant who changed the face of Brownsville, Texas — redefines historical approaches to Jewish acculturation. In this bordertown, Perl not only revitalized the Jewish community when he became the temple’s lay-rabbi, but he also actively united Mexican and Anglo communities both in Brownsville and across the border in its sister city of Matamoros. In Perl’s efforts to simultaneously revitalize his own religious community and the greater social landscape of the border area, Perl proved that he did not need to conform to the expectations of Anglo-Christian identity to succeed. Challenging theories of whiteness studies scholars, Perl never sacrificed his Jewish identity, had a boulevard named after him, and came to be known as “Mr. Brownsville.” Indeed, Perl’s profound impact on the Brownsville-Matamoros community was the result of his ability to occupy an “in-between,” interstitial position that did not require him to blend in with majority cultures; that is, Perl remained distinctly Jewish while simultaneously involving himself in both Anglo and Mexican arenas. Immersing himself in every aspect of bordertown life, Perl occupied multiple roles of community authority, serving as a businessman, rabbi, a Charro Days founder, cultural diplomat, court chaplain and radio host. A close examination of Perl’s life and considerable legacy demonstrates how new acculturation models are needed to better understand the manner in which Jews like Perl have adapted and contributed to dominant cultures. / text

En analys av fem skriptspråk - Egenskaper och utveckling / An analysis of five scripting languages - Characteristics and development

Isaksson, Patrik, Lindmark, Mikael January 2006 (has links)
During the last decade, scripting languages have seen an increase in both number of users and</p><p>areas of development. Earlier, scripting languages were mainly used for everyday system</p><p>administration tasks. Nowadays, scripting languages are used in areas where previously only</p><p>system languages were an alternative. In this dissertation, five scripting languages are</p><p>compared and reviewed. The languages are: PHP, Perl, Ruby, Tcl, and PostScript. The goal is</p><p>to examine characteristics of the languages and illustrate the differences between them. We</p><p>also compare the scripting languages against the system language C, which is not examined in</p><p>this dissertation. We perform a test where the quicksort algorithm is used to sort a number of</p><p>elements which are read from file. A test script is written in every language, and their</p><p>efficiency and expressiveness are compared.</p><p>In this dissertation we come to the conclusion that the definition of scripting languages, and</p><p>the main difference between scripting languages and system languages, is the absence of a</p><p>separate compiling stage for scripting languages. We also consider the use of dynamic typing</p><p>regarding variables to be an important aspect of scripting languages. The tests have shown</p><p>that scripting languages can not compete with the system language C regarding efficiency of</p><p>execution, but the scripting languages have a higher level of expressiveness. Perl is fastest</p><p>among the scripting languages and PostScript is the slowest.</p>

Remote Netlab

Engkvist, Tobias January 2016 (has links)
The projects main focus have been to create a system mainly for the users that study network technology on a more advanced level. In order for the students to start to configure the switches and routers they need to access a server with the SSH protocol which was one of the requirements. Another requirement was that only one user should be able to configure at same time (so two users should NOT be able to configure the switches and routers at the same time). The scripting languages that was used was bash, shell, perl and expect in order to achieve these goals and requirement. The result shows a finished product and that this project was feasable. The solution is presented as a flowchart as an overview and some regular text that explains the scripts in more depth. There are of course a ton of other ways to solve this problem and a few of them are presented and discussed in the later chapters.

Karlsson, Robert January 2016 (has links)
In a computer network there are many users that need to share the same resources and by that the user may experience the network to be very slow. This report investigate the network in Nya Slottet Bjärka Säby i Linköping why it is slow. Be doing a network tapping and collecting whats on the network, with a written Perl script that graphed out collected data, showed that no direct problem could be pointed out. It was noted that IPv6 was present on the network, that for this network is unnecessary and it's recommend to turn it off where it's possible. The investigation was for a week and shows to little information to find the real problem for the network speed. It recommends that more testing is performed to find the problem.

On Kalman filter implementation on FPGAs

Bhatia, Zorawar 17 December 2012 (has links)
The following dissertation attempts to highlight and address the implementation and performance of a Kalman filter on an FPGA. The reasons for choosing the Kalman filter and the platform for implementation are highlighted as well as an in depth explanation of the components and theory behind both are given. A controller system which allows the optimal performance of the Kalman filter on it is developed in VHDL. The design of the controller is dictated by the analysis of the Kalman filter which ensures only the most necessary components and operations are built into the instruction set. The controller is made up of several components including the loader, the ALU, Data RAM, KF IO, Control Store and the Branch Unit. The components working in conjunction allows the system to interface though a handshaking protocol with a peripheral of arbitrary latency. The control store is loaded with program code that is determined by converting human readable assembler into machine code through a Perl encoder. The controller system is tested and verified though an extensive testbench environment that emulates all outside signals and views internal operations. The controller system is capable of five matrix operations which are computed in parallel due to the FPGA development environment, which is far superior in this case to the alternative: a software solution, due to the vector operations inherent in the Kalman filter algorithm. The Kalman filter operation is analyzed and simulated in a MATLAB environment and this analysis confirms the need for the parallel processing power of the FPGA system upon which the controller has been built. FPGA statistical analysis confirms the successful implementation of the system meeting all criteria set at the outset of the project, including memory usage, IO usage and performance and accuracy benchmarks. / Graduate
