Qualitative Analysis of the Usability of Three Contemporary Scripting Languages: Perl, Python and Tcl.

Wang, Lingyun 01 August 2001 (has links) (PDF)
The subject of this thesis is a qualitative analysis of the usability of three contemporary programming languages: Perl, Python, and Tcl. The relative usability of these languages was assessed by implementing two representative applications — a paint program and a chat program — in all three languages; using PSP to collect data on program development; and then comparing development times, defect counts, and defect fix times. Overall, Python was the easiest of the three languages to use, especially for new users. Perl is the hardest, and Tcl is somewhere between. Specifically, Perl's basic language constructs are the hardest to learn and to use. Python's are the easiest. Tcl's are closer to Python's. Python's and Tcl's mechanisms for supporting OO are much easier to learn for new users than Perl's. Python's Tk libraries are easier to use than Perl's and Tcl's. Tcl's [Incr Widget] (megawidgets) library is by far the hardest to master. Perl's Tk library is somewhere in between. Perl's I/O and Socket libraries are much harder to use than Python's and Tcl's. The primary recommendations of this study are as follows: For Perl, a better OO support will reduce a significant number of OO-related defects, especially to new users. For Tcl, Tcl's [Incr Tcl] megawidget library should wrap the standard raw Tk widgets into [Incr Tk] classes, to prevent a significant number of defects from mixture uses of raw Tk widgets and [incr Tk] megawidgets classes. Tcl's eventloop mechanism is a good model for handling non-blocking sockets and I/Os. Both Perl and Python should also provide such an easy model.

Automation of the Spectral-Line Imaging Camera for the Virginia Tech Spectral-Line Survey

Portock, Kenneth Patrick 07 January 2003 (has links)
The Virginia Tech Spectral-Line Survey (VTSS) is a high sensitivity, high resolution survey of Hydrogen-$\alpha$ and Sulfur-II emission in the full northern hemisphere. The instrument used for the survey is the Spectral Line Imaging Camera (SLIC). SLIC uses a fast(f/1.2) lens attached to a cryogenically cooled, TK 512x512 CCD with 27 micron pixels. The focal length of the lens is 58mm which gives a pixel size of 1.6 arcminutes. The diameter of each field is 10degrees. A filter wheel ahead of the lens allows for imaging at different wavelengths. Automating the imaging system is desirable and advantageous due to the large scope of the survey. A variety of devices have been developed in order to implement automation of the SLIC observatory. They include an automated focusing mechanism, filter wheel, liquid nitrogen auto fill system, motorized roll-off roof, cloud monitor, and an equatorial mount. A PERL script, called SLICAR (Spectral Line Imaging Camera Automation Routine), was written to control and communicate with the various hardware and software components. The program also implements a user prepared Observing File, and makes decisions based on observing conditions. / Master of Science

The ITS2 Database - Application and Extension

Selig, Christian January 2007 (has links) (PDF)
The internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) of the ribosomal gene repeat is an increasingly important phylogenetic marker whose RNA secondary structure is widely conserved across eukaryotic organisms. The ITS2 database aims to be a comprehensive resource on ITS2 sequence and secondary structure, based on direct thermodynamic as well as homology modelled RNA folds. Results: (a) A rebuild of the original ITS2 database generation scripts applied to a current NCBI dataset reveal more than 60,000 ITS2 structures. This more than doubles the contents of the original database and triples it when including partial structures. (b) The end-user interface was rewritten, extended and now features user-defined homology modelling. (c) Other possible RNA structure discovery methods (namely suboptimal and shape folding) prove helpful but are not able to replace homology modelling. (d) A use case of the ITS2 database in conjunction with other tools developed at the department gave insight into molecular phylogenetic analysis with ITS2.

Quint, Julien 18 November 2002 (has links) (PDF)

Towards efficient legacy test evaluations at Ericsson AB, Linköping

Sterneberg, Karl Gustav January 2008 (has links)
<p>3Gsim is a load generator for traffic simulation in a WCDMA (WidebandCode Division Multiple Access) network. It is developed at Ericsson AB inLinköping. Tests are run daily and the results are evaluated by testers. Whenerrors or abnormalities are found, the testers write trouble reports and thedescribed problems are handed over to designers whose task is to fix them.In order to save time, Ericsson wished to improve the efficiency. This study has focused on a specific part of the process of the developmentof 3Gsim, namely the process of evaluating test results. The goal has beento investigate if and how the process of evaluating 3Gsim test results can bemade more efficient. The daily work of the testers has been studied at close hand by the author. The testers answered a questionnaire with questions about their work andtheir opinions about the tools being used. The answers were evaluated andfocus was laid on the main problems. It was found that a lot of time is wasted on searching for trouble reports.A big part of the test result evaluation process consists of going throughsummary logs with error print-outs. Unfortunately no mapping betweenerror print-outs and trouble reports is performed. When going through thesummary logs the testers have to determine which errors have already beenreported and which ones that haven’t. Another major problem is the factthat most tests fail. On the webpage where the test results are displayed, this is indicated by a coloured field showing red. This is believed to have anegative effect on the work attitude.A lot of time can be saved by mapping error print-outs to trouble reportsand automatically comparing new error print-outs with old ones. The mappingwill also help preventing the creation of duplicated trouble reports. Thissolution will have the greatest impact on the improvement of the efficiency.Another way to enhance the efficiency is to develop a more advanced colourcoding scheme than the one used today. This coding scheme will help thetesters making the right priorities when processing the test results. Furthermore, these two solutions will have a positive effect on the work attitude. Aprototype implementing the first solution has been created. This prototypegives Ericsson AB the possibility to test the solution idea in practice.</p>
