An Analysis of the Components of Mental Toughness in Sport

Creasy, John Wayne Jr. 21 November 2005 (has links)
Many coaches are becoming aware of the importance of developing mentally tough performers and are designing programs to develop it in their athletes. One of the most significant problems in designing these programs is the inconsistency in the definition and description of mental toughness. If programs are to be designed with the goal of developing mental toughness in athletes, the components of the construct must be identified. Based on the advantages that mental toughness can offer to the performer, this study was designed to develop an understanding of the components of mental toughness in sport. The purpose of this study was to identify the components of mental toughness as perceived by National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) coaches and was guided by two fundamental questions: what are the essential components of mental toughness? and to what degree are these components teachable (trainable). Twenty-two NCAA coaches were selected to participate from a mix of Division I, II, and III male sports teams. The procedures for this study were divided into a two-phase approach. Phase One consisted of each participant completing a questionnaire for the purpose of evaluating the importance and teachability (trainability) of 20 separate components of mental toughness. Phase Two consisted of follow-up, semi-structured interviews that provided further insight into the perspectives of the participants. The results of this study indicated the essential components of mental toughness based on their importance to the construct. The results also indicated the degree of teachability (trainability) of each component. A unique relationship between teachability and trainability was also revealed in this study. These findings provide a better understanding of the components of mental toughness and support the need for its development in sport. / Ph. D.

Characterizing Productive Perseverance Using Sensor-Free Detectors of Student Knowledge, Behavior, and Affect

Botelho, Anthony 18 April 2019 (has links)
Failure is a necessary step in the process of learning. For this reason, there has been a myriad of research dedicated to the study of student perseverance in the presence of failure, leading to several commonly-cited theories and frameworks to characterize productive and unproductive representations of the construct of persistence. While researchers are in agreement that it is important for students to persist when struggling to learn new material, there can be both positive and negative aspects of persistence. What is it, then, that separates productive from unproductive persistence? The purpose of this work is to address this question through the development, extension, and study of data-driven models of student affect, behavior, and knowledge. The increased adoption of computer-based learning platforms in real classrooms has led to unique opportunities to study student learning at both fine levels of granularity and longitudinally at scale. Prior work has leveraged machine learning methods, existing learning theory, and previous education research to explore various aspects of student learning. These include the development of sensor-free detectors that utilize only the student interaction data collected through such learning platforms. Building off of the considerable amount of prior research, this work employs state-of-the-art machine learning methods in conjunction with the large scale granular data collected by computer-based learning platforms in alignment with three goals. First, this work focuses on the development of student models that study learning through the use of advancements in student modeling and deep learning methodologies. Second, this dissertation explores the development of tools that incorporate such models to support teachers in taking action in real classrooms to promote productive approaches to learning. Finally, this work aims to complete the loop in utilizing these detector models to better understand the underlying constructs that are being measured through their application and their connection to productive perseverance and commonly-observed learning outcomes.

Les trajectoires de persévérance des apprenants comme révélateur de l'articulation entre dispositif de formation et entreprise / Pathways of perseverance of learners as developers of the articulation between training and enterprise devices

Corvasce Cartallier, Caroline 13 October 2017 (has links)
The thesis starts from the observation that management sciences have paid little attention to training as a learning device and have an instrumentalized vision of it. However, in the face of accelerating technological change and new standards of competitiveness, learning and application of knowledge within companies is a major challenge. In this context, the aim of our thesis is to produce lessons on the trajectories of perseverance of learners in the articulation of training / enterprise. The literature in management sciences gives us the axes to approach this perseverance through the organizational and managerial stakes. The cross-examination with the sciences of education makes it possible to refine the individual difficulties encountered by the learners. We show from a Participative Action Research that all these constraints are found both in the training devices and on the workstations. Our research is based on an analysis of trajectories of students in initial training (FI) continuing education (CF) and continuing vocational training (CF) over three years. We highlight the brakes and levers encountered by each learner as well as the dynamics that are played in each structure and in their articulation. The study shows that perseverance is a process to be analyzed taking into account the individual, collective and organizational constraints in the back and forth between the training devices and the companies.
