QC 351 A7 no. 65 / The significance of signal-dependent noise is discussed. Particular emphasis is placed on the type of multiplicative noise present in the density variations in a photographic emulsion. A theoretical treatment of the effect of multiplicative noise on signal detection and signal discrimination problems is presented. Optimum test statistics are derived for processing a sampled message to detect the presence of a known signal. Multiplicative noise described by Poisson and Gaussian statistics is considered. The expressions are extended to include the two-signal discrimination problem. Two-dimensional signal fields in the presence of multiplicative noise are simulated in a computer and processed for optimum signal detection according to the two derived methods. These results are compared to the results of processing based on the assumption of stationary noise statistics. This comparison reveals that modest improvements (20% to 30% reduction in false alarm rate) are obtained when the signal-dependent nature of the noise statistics is considered. The effects of signal-to-noise ratio, signal structure, and changing background level are also investigated. An example of optimum signal discrimination using circles and squares as signals in multiplicative noise is reported. An improvement in the percentage of correctly identified signals is again observed when the proper test statistic is used. Two examples of signal filtering in the presence of signal-dependent noise are included. The first concerns the processing of a real star field to determine the location of weak stars. The second is an illustration of the signal information contained in the noise spectrum of a message recorded on a common photographic film.

Dissertation in fulfilment of the degree of Master of Arts in Fine Arts by coursework and research report at the University of the Witwatersrand 2014 / My research intends to appropriate and recast Jacques Derrida’s ideas by seeking to interpret the written text as supplementary to photographic images. I use a close reading of Judith Coullie’s introductory text to Selves in Question: Interviews on Southern African Auto/biography (2006) to explore Santu Mofokeng’s representation of his biography and autobiography. Through selected works by Mofokeng, I highlight photographic ways and writing modes of expressing and locating his voice, drawing on the artist’s own subjective reality, memory and metaphor. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) in conjunction with the introductory text to Selves in Question serve to provide much historical evidence and contexts to the complexities of writing a personal narrative in an exploration of freedom within the confines of oppression. I nevertheless acknowledge that some narratives are heavily dependent on a collaborative relationship. The negotiated different moments and perspectives that make up various presented narratives are born from spaces and places that act as intersections within the private and public in a constant state of stasis and movement..

科技在過去十多年的迅速發展，成就了電腦及互聯網絡的普及，將人類推向一個未知的新紀元。我們正處於一個影像數量前所未有地泛濫、流通的時代，更多影像媒體的出現，導致我們對於觀看的方式有了新的體驗。視覺媒介與及影像長久以來也在藝術創作、以至人類文明中佔據著主導地位，作為當代藝術家如何對應這個時代的科技與影像文化變遷？本文從三個章節去探討當代藝術創作在數位科技下對新媒體影像的探討與反思。一）影像的定義與科技發展的歷史脈絡：先探討當下數位影像跟觀看方式的轉變，透過檢視影像建構意義的過程去確立一個討論的環境前提；並追朔媒體與空間概念跟影像科技發展的歷史脈絡。二）新媒體與數位影像：界定新媒體的定義，及其發展對影像意義、角色定位所帶來的轉變；延伸至當下虛擬與真實的空間概念轉變。三）非物質的物質化呈現：以當代藝術創作為例子，去闡述新媒體影像及其媒介平台在當代生活中的各種面向。本章所論述的藝術創作集中在以傳統媒介為基礎去對應新媒體影像的藝術作品，而非以新媒體本身為作品媒介的「新媒體藝術創作」。在文末附以本人的藝術作品以供參考。 / The rapid development in technology caused the popularization of computers and internet over the past decades and it generated a new era to human beings. We are at the age of unprecedented number of image, the new visual media has led to a new way of looking. Images and visual media have long been a dominant position in art and human civilization, how to respond with this era of technology and visual culture change as a contemporary artist becomes an important issue. This thesis is divided into three chapters which aim at exploring contemporary artistic creation, discussion and reflection of images of the new media in the digital technology. 1) The definition of image through historical context and development of visual technology: The first phase discusses the change on the way of looking according to the present digital images, the process of constructing meaning through looking the image are introduced to establish a background for the discussion; and traced the historical context of media technology with image development. 2) Of the digital images and new media: The second phase defines the definition of new media, and its influence on the meaning and role of extends to the changes in the concept of virtuality and real space. 3) Representation of the non-material substance: Use contemporary artistic practices as examples to describe the various aspects of new media image in contemporary life. Discussions in this chapter of artistic creation is concentrated in the work of traditional media that use new media image as subject rather than works of new media art". This photographic documentary seeks to record the transition from teenager into adulthood of twelve girls living in Melbourne, Australia between 2002 and 2008. Throughout the process of the project the artist has sought to challenge the assumption that reaching adulthood can be defined by achieving certain milestones in society, and that the transition period is as much about personal self-realisation on the part of the individual, as it is about measurements set by society. The photographic work is accompanied by text in the form of quotes taken from audio interviews conducted throughout the documentation process. This paper compares the ideas set by society about the process of becoming an adult and the real life events that triggered this transition period in this particular group of girls.

Photographs contain a wealth of information which may be used effectively in historical research. Visual images may be used as evidence, for illustration, for comparison and contrast, and for analytical purposes. Somewhat perplexing is the relatively minimal use of photographs as primary sources in historical inquiry concerning schooling. Many visual clues exist which can help to explain the activities, methods, resources and quality of schooling, and the people involved in schooling, in selected locations. Visual clues may be coordinated with text and with other artifacts to present a more complete picture of schooling in a specific time and place than text alone can provide. Photographs provide opportunities to compare systems of schooling and to engage in longitudinal analysis of a single school system. They can be useful in helping to investigate elements of schooling that may have elevated selected school systems to exemplary levels. The presence of a large collection of educationally related photographs reveals opportunities for utilization which are not present with individual photographs or small groups of photographs. The potential uses of photographs as primary sources for inquiry are not limited to professional historians, but may be taught to, and used by students, as well. This study shows benefits and possibilities of utilizing photographic images as primary sources in historical research in education, and in teaching historical research methods, through the use of examples contained in the Albert W. Achterberg Collection of photographs. The collection was developed during the period of 1940-1999 over an 8,000 square mile area in south-central Nebraska and features a school system in the town of Holdrege, Nebraska.
