Culture in health communication : an IsiZulu translation of the photonovel "An Ounce of Prevention" as a case study

Health is one of the most important issues in the lives of human beings and has a direct effect on the well-being of a country’s citizens and its economy. Researchers emphasise the role of communication in maintaining health and well-being, and in preventingdisease by changing behaviour. In a multilingual society such as South Africa, health communication documents are often translated for distribution to different language groups. However, the translation of health-related communication documents, specifically for use by low-literate target audiences, poses many challenges, especially in cases where there is a considerable distance between the source text and the target cultures. Translators who work in the field of health communication require specific strategies that will enable them to effectively transfer health-related information that is steeped in cultural meaning while taking into consideration aspects such as stigma and taboo. This study explores the challenges faced during the translation from English into isiZulu of a photonovel called An ounce of prevention, a health document about cervical cancer originally developed for a Latin American audience. This text relies heavily on cultural elements to convey messages. Through an overview of Christiane Nord’s model of Functionality +Loyalty (2005), as well as Larkey and Hecht’s (2010) model of Effects of Narratives as Culture-Centric Health Promotion, a set of analytic heuristics was distilled and applied as a tool to systematically identify cultural elements in the photonovel to ensure that a translation into isiZulu would be culturally acceptable to a Zulu target audience. The purpose of analytic heuristics is to assist translators’ understanding of the communicative situation in which the source text was produced. Once they have been equipped with necessary knowledge of the communication situation and have a sound understanding of the photonovel as a text, translators should be able to systematically identify culture-specific elements in the source text. Thereafter they can establish the cultural distance between the source text culture and the target text communication situation to ensure that all narrative characteristics from both the personal and socio-cultural levels of the narrative inform the concepts of transportation, identification and social profiling. Translators are thus equipped to make informed decisions regarding the translation of specific challenges identified in the source text that would make the target text culturally unacceptable to the target culture. Once the heuristics have been applied to excerpts from the photonovel that pose intercultural challenges, it is concluded that cultural elements and linguistic norms have been successfully identified in the source text and have been appropriately re-contextualised in the target text to ensure that the original message is conveyed. The printed matter used for such proposal is the Periodical of the Jornal das Moças, enters the years of 1948 and 1968. The focus is in verifying in cited periodic some of the lived social experiences in the decades of the cited period. The inquiries in these societies - of the years of 1948 the 1968 - involve referring debates to the family, sexuality, behavior and habits. Thus, the considered work tries to elucidate such source of research from its production, being inquired the changes or not pointed for the magazine in relation to the idealized feminine models, had as the main reading public of the periodic one. Through the analysis of the preferences of the publishing body, in the direction to publish histories of love in diverse formats (stories, illustrated novels, fotonovelas, loving tests), it is perceivable the given importance love that points with respect to proclaimed feminine figures to the domestic spaces, legitimizing to the models of mother and wife as essentials to the women. The standardization of the feminine bodies, displayed through offered corporal measures as beauty models, and the appositive advertising executives attributed to the cares of itself and the privacy, spread and idea of changes in certain habits, but also they require the destitution of new old customs when praising of the same ones. Thus, already in the mass culture, the feminine figure contemplated by the Jornal das Moças would be that one that assimilates and reproduces the models of wife and mother as proposal of happiness, mediating and managing the the family habits and consumptions, supported and in wide measured requested through the history loving in diverse formats that the periodic one propagated / Esta dissertação tem como objetivo expor uma discussão sobre os usos de periódicos como fontes à História. O impresso utilizado para tal proposta é o Jornal das Moças, entre os anos de 1948 e 1968. O foco está em verificar no citado periódico algumas das experiências sociais vividas nas décadas do período citado. As investigações historiográficas nessas sociedades - dos anos de 1948 a 1968 - envolvem debates referentes à família, sexualidade, comportamento e hábitos. Assim, o trabalho proposto tenta elucidar tal fonte de pesquisa a partir de sua produção, averiguando as mudanças e conformismos apontados pela revista em relação aos modelos femininos idealizados, tido como o principal público leitor do periódico. Através da análise das preferências do corpo editorial, no sentido de publicar histórias de amor em diversos formatos (contos, novelas ilustradas, fotonovelas, testes amorosos), é perceptível a importância dada amor romanceado que aponta para figuras femininas apregoadas aos espaços domésticos, legitimando os modelos de mãe e esposa como preteríveis às mulheres. A padronização dos corpos femininos, expostos através de medidas corpóreas oferecidas como modelos de beleza, e as apostas publicitárias atribuídas aos cuidados de si e à intimidade, disseminam e ideia de mudanças em certos hábitos, mas também requerem a destituição de costumes antigos ao preconizarem novos dos mesmos. Assim, já na cultura de massa, a figura feminina contemplada pelo Jornal das Moças seria aquela que assimila e reproduz os modelos de esposa e mãe como ideal de felicidade, mediando e administrando os hábitos e consumos familiares, suportada e em larga medida visibilizada através dos romances em diversos formatos que o periódico veiculou
