A Meta-analysis of Evolutionary Responses in Native Plants to Introduced Plant Species: Does Phylogenetic Distance Play a Role?

While there is increasing interest in the evolutionary consequences of species invasions on native plant communities, the connection between the phylogenetic relatedness of invaders and natives, and its evolutionary consequences, has not yet received much attention. One way to examine the role of relatedness on the impact of species invasions is through the use of meta-analytical techniques combined with a phylogenetic framework. I apply this technique and expand on a prior meta-analysis by Oduor (2013), in order to compare how native plant species that either have prior experience coexisting with an invasive (‘experienced’) or do not (‘naïve'), differ in terms of their growth and reproduction in the presence of the invasive for evidence of a phylogenetic signal in their response to plan invasions. My results suggest that the effects of a species invasion on native growth and reproductive traits may be greater when the native and invasive species are distantly related, and/or when the invasive species is allelopathic, but only in the presence on the invader. I also found that the negative effect of competition with an invader on native growth traits tended to be greatest when the native and invasive species were closely related, suggesting that the strength of competition and the evolutionary response of native plants to invasive plants may not be as closely associated as it is often assumed. Overall, my analysis suggests that future studies may benefit from integrating phylogenetic relatedness when exploring native evolutionary responses to invasions, but that considerable work need sot be done to tease apart the roles of relatedness and competition.

Diversidade florística e estrutura filogenética de ilhas arbustivas em uma restinga subtropical / Floristic diversity and phylogenetic structure in woody islands of a subtropical coastal environment

Neste trabalho, avaliamos como arbustos pioneiros regulam comunidades lenhosas em uma restinga subtropical. Arbustos têm grande capacidade de modificar ecossistemas, pois alteram o fluxo de nutrientes e água do solo, aprisionam sementes transportadas por água ou vento sob suas copas, e oferecem recursos a dispersores. A combinação desses processos leva ao surgimento de ilhas de fertilidade em áreas de vegetação herbácea, aumentando a diversidade local. Interações biológicas são fatores determinantes na coexistência de espécies nessas ilhas arbustivas. Portanto, utilizamos atributos vegetativos de arbustos e distância filogenética média (MPD) entre as espécies para avaliar como a riqueza, a abundância e a diversidade (i.e. Entropia Quadrática de Rao, EQR) são reguladas em moitas de restinga. Também comparamos esses mesmos parâmetros nas áreas de vegetação predominantemente herbácea circundantes às ilhas arbustivas. A fim de entender a estruturação filogenética nesse ambiente, calculamos o net relatedness index (NRI) de cada moita. Nossos dados reforçam a importância de arbustos pioneiros sobre a vegetação de áreas predominantemente campestres devido à sua capacidade de modificar o micro-habitat sob suas copas e pelas interações com espécies que colonizam as ilhas arbustivas. / In this work we tested how pioneer shrubs regulate community structure in woody islands of a subtropical sand-dune (restinga) environment. Shrubby species show a great ability to modify ecosystems, since they change the flux of nutrients and water in the soil, they retain under their crowns seeds carried by water or wind, and the seeds in turn attract new dispersers. The combination of these processes leads to the formation of fertility islands in areas with herbaceous vegetation, increasing the local diversity. Biological interactions are determinant factors in the coexistence of species in these shrubby islands. So we used vegetative traits of shrubs and mean phylogenetic distance (MPD) between species to evaluate how richness, abundance and diversity, i.e., Rao‟s quadratic entropy (RQE), are regulated in sand-dune woody islands. We also evaluated the same parameters in the surrounding areas with predominantly herbaceous vegetation. In order to understand the phylogenetic structuring in this environment we estimated the net relatedness index (NRI) in each woody thicket. Our data reinforce the importance of pioneer shrubs in a matrix of the predominantly open grassland vegetation because of their ability to modify the microhabitat under their crowns and their interactions with other species which colonize the shrubby islands.

At the same time it is a huge biogeographical experiment that allows the formulation of hypotheses about the rules for communitie assembly. This study tested the hypothesis that the level of phylogenetic relationship is positively correlated with the magnitude of competitive interactions, being stronger for closer species. We used two exotic African species (Panicum maximum and Andropogon gayanus) and a native of South America (Paspalum atratum-focal species) in a partial additive design for the mix of native-exotic, with an increase in density of the exotic. The results showed greater competitive effect on the focal species when in the presence of P. maximum (closer to the focal), suggesting that predictions can be made on potential invasive species based on the Darwin s Naturalization Hypothesys. / Invasões biológicas são atualmente umas das mais graves ameaças aos ecossistemas. Suas consequências estendem-se por toda a cadeia trófica, atingindo também comunidades e ecossistemas, com altos custos estimados para ações mitigadoras. Ao mesmo tempo revela-se um imenso experimento biogeográfico que possibilita a formulação de hipóteses sobre regras de assembléia de comunidades. Este trabalho testou a hipótese de que o nível de relação filogenética esta positivamente associado com a magnitude da interação competitiva, sendo maior para espécies mais aparentadas. Foram utilizadas duas espécies exóticas africanas (Panicum maximum e Andropogon gayanus) e uma nativa da América do Sul (Paspalum atratum-espécie focal) em um delineamento aditivo parcial para a combinação exótica-nativa, com aumento na densidade da espécie exótica. Os resultados mostraram maior efeito competitivo sobre a espécie focal quando na presença de P. maximum (mais próxima à focal), o que sugere que podem ser feitas predições sobre potenciais espécies invasoras com base na Hipótese de Naturalização de Darwin.
