Microzooplankton from oligotrophic waters off south west Western Australia : biomass, diversity and impact on phytoplankton

Paterson, Harriet January 2006 (has links)
[Truncated abstract] The role of marine microzooplankton in aquatic food webs has been studied in most regions of the world’s oceans, with the exception of the subtropical/temperate eastern Indian Ocean. This thesis addresses this gap in knowledge by investigating microzooplankton from five stations on a cross continental shelf transect and in two mesoscale features ∼300 km offshore of south west Western Australia. My primary focus was to measure and evaluate microzooplankton community change over space and time and their impact on phytoplankton on a cross shelf transect, sampling five stations from February 2002 December 2004 as part of a large multidisciplinary investigation into the pelagic ecosystem on the shelf (Chapter 2). This transect was named the Two Rocks transect. I also investigated an eddy pair (Chapter 5), which had originated from water in the vicinity of the Two Rocks transect, also undertaken as part of a larger study, investigating biophysical coupling within mesoscale eddies off south west Western Australia . . . The distribution of mixotrophic cells differed across the transect. Those mixotrophs that use photosynthesis as their primarily energy source exploited nutrient limited conditions inshore consuming particles, while mixotrophs that are primarily heterotrophic survived low prey conditions offshore by photosynthesizing. In the eddies, the grazing behaviour of microzooplankton was dependent on the specific phytoplankton assemblage in each eddy. The warm core eddy had a resident population of diatoms that were consumed by heterotrophic dinoflagellates present in high numbers. The cold core eddy had a warm cap which prevented upwelled water reaching the surface, resulting in stratification and a very active microbial food web, particularly in the surface.

The problem, in quantitative terms , is caused due to local climatic conditions due mostly to a water deficit. Qualitatively, results of multiple uses and resulting contamination by human activities. Eutrophication is presented as a threat to the sustainable use of water resources, in order to favor the predominance of dense populations of cyanobacteria, which can be potentially harmful to human health. The aim of this study is to understand the population dynamics of phytoplankton and cyanobacteria to assess water quality of reservoirs Santa Cruz do Apodi and Pau dos Ferros belonging to bacia Apodi Mossor?-RN . Water samples were collected monthly between October 2011 and May 2012 in reservoirs Santa Cruz do Apodi and Pau dos Ferros, in this latter , in Jan/12 we performed a diel profile . The abiotic variables obtained in the field and in the laboratory were: water temperature , dissolved oxygen , pH , turbidity , transparency , total nitrogen and total phosphorus . Phytoplankton samples were collected with a plankton net and bottle of Van dorn . Were performed : identification , quantification , calculation of biovolume , classification into functional groups and index calculation phytoplankton assembly ( Q ) , cyanotoxins were quantified by ELISA . Statistical analyzes supported the evaluation of the dynamics between biotic and abiotic factors. A questionnaire was conducted to examine the conceptions of the population, education professionals and students. The reservoir of Pau dos Ferros, shallow , turbid and eutrophic showed dominance of the functional group SN throughout the sample period . The phytoplankton biomass ranged from 20 to 70 mm ? . L - 1, the lowest values coincided with the increase of the mixing zone and transparency, which contributed to the occurrence of a change in species composition phytoplankton . The application of the index Q proved relevant, the reservoir of Pau dos Ferros , depending on the species present , was classified ecologically as bad for almost the entire sample period . The reservoir Santa Cruz do Apodi showed low biomass ( 0.04 and 4.31 mm ? . L - 1 ) and greater diversity in the phytoplankton composition . According to the index assembly (Q ), it showed moderate condition during most of the period influenced by different functional groups of typical meso- eutrophic environment (K S0, H1, C, F , J , E, D and N) . Associations of diatoms and green algae D and X1 succeeded populations of cyanobacteria in periods marked by greater instability in the system , caused by wind or rain. In summary , the occurrence of drought has a direct influence on the hydrological conditions of the reservoirs , in general, these events, reducing the reservoir level is directly related to decreased water quality and increased density of phytoplankton occurring predominance of cyanobacteria , the index Q reflected well to changes in phytoplankton composition , being a good indicator for biomonitoring of reservoirs in this study and survey of previous conceptions showed the need to work on environmental awareness for the preservation of water resources by conducting workshops for Environmental Education / A escassez de ?gua ? uma realidade para os habitantes da regi?o semi?rida brasileira.

Složení společenstva bakterioplanktonu v závislosti na kompozici fytoplanktonu v období jeho jarního vrcholu / Relating bacterioplankton composition to shifts in phytoplankton community dynamics during its spring bloom period

HAVLIŠOVÁ, Tereza January 2011 (has links)
Over the period of the spring phytoplankton bloom (March-May 2009), an intensive sampling program was conducted at 2 sampling depths (0.5 m and 1% PAR) located at lacustrine zone of the canyon-shaped, meso-eutrophic Římov reservoir (Czech Republic). Changes in the production and community dynamics of epilimnetic bacterioplankton, studied by means of group-specific rRNA-targeted oligonucleotide probes, were related to shifts in composition and activity of phytoplankton, and to remarkable changes in total protistan bacterivory. It was documented that particular groups of bacterioplankton responded differently to: (i) major shifts in phytoplankton composition and its activity and to (ii) changes in overall protozoan grazing pressure.

Primary Production and Nutrient Dynamics of Urban Ponds

Rolon dos Santos Mérette, Muriel January 2012 (has links)
In urban areas, stormwater management ponds (SWPs) are built to mitigate polluted runoff. Although these ponds are increasing in numbers, their ecology is not well understood. Physical and chemical characteristics of 17 SWPs in the City of Ottawa were measured to determine the drivers of phytoplankton biomass (Chl. a) and primary production (PP). While total phosphorus was the best predictor of algal biomass in the ponds (as in lakes), the imperviousness of the catchment could also predict Chl. a. Planktonic PP in two ponds measured seasonally was more closely related to water residence time than to nutrient concentrations with rates approaching at times the theoretical maximum for aquatic systems. In one pond, whole ecosystem metabolism, estimated using diel changes in dissolved oxygen and δ18O-O2, suggested that these hypereutrophic systems were net sinks for carbon in the summer but likely sources to the atmosphere at other times of the year.

Bildung funktioneller Typgruppen des Phytoplanktons: Integration von Modell-, Freiland - und Laborarbeiten

König-Rinke, Marie Rita 10 March 2008 (has links)
Klarwasserphase in eutrophen Gewässern). / Phytoplankter are the most important primary producer in aquatic ecosystems and contribute about 45 % to global primary production. Phytoplankton communities usually show an enormous taxonomical diversity. However, besides taxonomical diversity, a phytoplankton can also be characterised by its functional diversity by means of functional traits like resource-dependent growth characteristics (e.g. KI-, KP-, KN-values) or sensitivity to zooplankton grazing and sedimentation. Since functional, and not taxonomic, traits drive the phytoplankton succession, a functional classification of phytoplankton is recognised to be increasingly important for the ecological understanding and modelling of plankton succession (e.g. in water quality models). The mechanistic, dynamic, vertical 1D water quality model SALMO simulates the dynamics of nutrient concentrations (P, N), oxygen, detritus, 4 functional phytoplankton types and 1 mixed zooplankton group. Different model applications showed that the number of phytoplankton types in SALMO was sometimes not sufficient for accounting for the observed functional diversity in phytoplankton communities. Therefore, the aim of this thesis is to extend the functional diversity of phytoplankton types in SALMO. After careful evaluation of empirical data from two reservoirs with different morphology and trophic state 10 functional phytoplankton types are proposed (types 1, 2 and 4 remained unchanged). Existing functional traits in SALMO were extended and partly changed (in total 10 functional traits). For the new functional phytoplankton type 6 (non motile, colonial gelatinous green algae) light-dependent growth rates were measured and grazing experiments with Daphnia galeata × hyalina were carried out in the laboratory. For these experiments, Sphaerocystis schroeteri was chosen as representative species for this group. It is characterised by high light demand and relative high growth rates at 20 °C (µmax = 0.96 d-1, Iopt = 250 µmol m-2 s-1, 12:12 h light-dark cycle). Their growth depends on the availability of free CO2. This explains the common occurrence in oligo-mesotrophic water bodies. The range of the colony sizes of Sphaerocystis increased in the presence of Daphnia significantly (portion of inedible colonies 3-74 %) in contrast to the control (portion of inedible colonies 0-5 %). This was induced by direct size-selective grazing and not by infochemicals. Thus, Sphaerocystis has evolved an effective defence mechanism against size-selective filter-feeding zooplankton and is competitive superior at high zooplankton grazing pressure (e.g. clear water stage in eutrophic waters). The lack of experimentally derived parameters for temperature- and phosphorus-depending growth (Tmin, Topt, KP-value) as well as gross sinking velocity was complemented with literature data. The alga is only moderately competitive for phosphorus and exhibits relatively high minimal and optimal growth temperatures (Tmin = 7 °C, Topt = 27 °C). Since type 6 consists of large, non motile species, gross sinking velocity was estimated to be about 1.5 m d-1.

Phytoplankton dynamics in two large rivers:: long-term trends, longitudinal dynamics and potential impacts of climate change

Hardenbicker, Paulin 08 April 2014 (has links)
This study addresses the regulation of large river phytoplankton by climate-related drivers with the help of three different approaches, i.e. analyses of long-term data and spatial dynamics (longitudinal samplings) as well as mathematical modeling. The central hypothesis is that discharge has a dominant role among climate-related variables which strongly alters phytoplankton biomass development. A multi-factorial statistical analysis on the basis of long-term data (1990 – 2009; 1994 – 2009) from two measuring stations of the rivers Rhine and Elbe revealed that discharge conditions and light availability were the main driving forces regulating phytoplankton spring bloom dynamics. For the Rhine, a trend towards an earlier occurrence of the spring bloom event and a decrease in seasonal mean phytoplankton biomass could be detected, whereas for the Elbe no shift in the timing of the spring bloom and a tendency towards increasing seasonal mean phytoplankton biomass was found. Longitudinal sampling campaigns served to analyze the spatial plankton development on a short-term scale. River-internal growth and loss processes, as well as import mediated by tributaries were examined. Four longitudinal profiles were realized at different seasons in recent years (2009 – 2011) and it was revealed that tributaries mainly had a diluting impact on plankton densities in the Elbe and provided an additional import of phyto- and zooplankton densities in the Rhine. In the present study, high bivalve abundances were detected in the Rhine, probably leading to river-internal losses of phytoplankton which could compensate phytoplankton production resulting in low phytoplankton concentrations. In the Elbe, low abundances of bivalves and a low benthic grazing pressure prevailed. On the other hand, an unusually low discharge event in spring 2011 in the Rhine demonstrated that loss processes can at times be superimposed by strong phytoplankton production leading to extremely high phytoplankton biomasses and chlorophyll a values. Hence, despite the observed long-term trend of decreasing chlorophyll values in the last two decades, extreme environmental conditions can provoke regime shifts with exceptional phytoplankton mass developments. To assess the potential impacts of future climate change on water quality, the water quality simulation model QSim was used to establish a model for the free-flowing part of the Rhine. The modeling approach was implemented by changing the hydrological and climatologic input data according to different climate projections for the near (2021 – 2050) and the far future (2071 – 2100). The model results indicated a weak response of phytoplankton biomass in the Rhine towards altered climatic conditions, including discharge reductions and water temperature increases. The study suggests that changes in discharge rather than water temperature mediate climate change effects on large river phytoplankton. However, the effects are river specific as a consequence of system specific differences in main control mechanisms (e.g. ‘bottom-up’ versus ‘top-down’). ‚Bottom-up’ versus ‚Top-down’).

Surface Water Quality Assessment Using Phytoplankton and Zoobenthos: A Case Study at Bung Binh Thien, An Giang Province, Vietnam

Nguyen, Thanh Giao 15 May 2020 (has links)
The study aimed to evaluate water quality at Bung Binh Thien Lake, An Giang Province, Vietnam using Shannon-Wiener species diversity index (H’) and associated average score per taxon (ASPT) calculated from composition of phytoplankton and zoobenthos. The water quality index (WQI) was used as the reference for the quality of surface water. The samples of surface water quality, phytoplankton, and zoobenthos were simultaneously collected at 11 sites in the dry season. The results showed that WQI (57-88) classified water quality from good to medium, H’ calculated using phytoplankton species (1.12-2.71) presented water quality from medium to bad whereas, (H'z) calculated (0 to 2.07) and ASPT (2-4.21) calculated from zoobenthos species divided water quality from bad to very bad. The findings revealed that assessing water quality should not totally only relied on diversity indices (H’, ASPT) but also carefully consider compositions of phytoplankton and zooplankton. In addition, interpretation of the biodiversity indices for water quality examination should involve the experts in the relevant fields.
