Esta dissertação teve por objetivo iniciar investigações sobre os efeitos do uso de agregados reciclados contaminados por baixos teores de gesso de construção, em argamassas de assentamento de alvenarias. Na presença de umidade e por ação de minerais do gesso ou de outros mais complexos, que sejam formados, há riscos de fissuras, eflorescências e de deterioração progressiva dessas paredes. Um programa experimental foi realizado para a avaliação acelerada desses processos, por medidas de propriedades químicas, físicas e mecânicas de vinte argamassas. Materiais regionais usados em alvenarias e concreto na cidade de Socorro-SP foram escolhidos, pois lá existe uma usina de reciclagem, que produz areia reciclada para essas argamassas e com elevado teor de finos. Quatro agregados reciclados de granulometria muito fina e similar entre si foram artificialmente produzidos, por processos controlados de construção e demolição. Assim, estudou-se um agregado reciclado não contaminado (A1 com SO3 igual a 0,2 %) e outros três idênticos, com previsão de contaminação progressiva (A2, A3 e A4 , mas que resultaram com teor de SO3 total da ordem de 0,5 % a 0,6 %). Quatro grupos de argamassas foram produzidos com variação do consumo de cimento (200, 150 e 100 kg/m3), tipo de cimento (CP II e CP III) e ainda com e sem o uso de cal hidratada tipo CH III (teor elevado de carbonatos). O consumo de agregado reciclado anidro nas argamassas variou entre 1300 e 1200 kg/m3. Em cada grupo, foi ainda produzida uma argamassa mista, com areia muito pura e quartzosa, de granulometria e dosagem mais próximas às de argamassas normalizadas para alvenarias. A metodologia do programa baseou-se no envelhecimento acelerado das argamassas, a partir de 63 dias de idade e por ciclos de 7 dias em câmara úmida, alternados por 7 dias em estufa ventilada a 40 oC. Essa ciclagem foi adotada após criterioso levantamento bibliográfico e visando-se um processo holístico de deterioração preconizado por Collepardi (2003), inclusive para agregados reciclados contaminados por sulfatos. A partir de 63 dias de idade, foram então caracterizadas regularmente as seguintes propriedades das argamassas: resistência à tração na flexão, resistência à compressão, módulos de elasticidade estático e dinâmico. Durante a ciclagem, foram realizados ensaios complementares de termogravimetria e análise química quantitativa de sulfatos solúveis e de sais solúveis totais nas argamassas. Um conjunto de corpos-de-prova das argamassas permaneceu em câmara seca e foi também ensaiado a 175 dias, inclusive quanto à suscetibilidade a eflorescência. Entre 63 e 175 dias, foram realizados 8 ciclos de envelhecimento e conclui-se que a principal propriedade mecânica afetada durante a ciclagem foi a resistência à tração na flexão das argamassas e isto ocorreu a partir de 91 dias, nos quatro grupos de argamassas com agregado reciclado, sendo que entre 63 e 91 dias se quantificou uma evolução significativa de carbonatação pela termogravimetria. Os grupos de argamassas mistas com cimento e cal hidratada mostraram melhor desempenho neste estudo do que as argamassas simples de cimento e areia reciclada fina, inclusive quanto à eflorescência. Os resultados obtidos são restritos ao estudo de caso, mas permitem concluir que a contaminação de agregados reciclados para argamassas, por baixos teores de gesso de construção já foi suficiente para produzir alterações significativas no desempenho mecânico das argamassas e nos seus níveis de sulfatos solúveis, que foram alterados de forma coerente com a ciclagem e sendo possível a sua interpretação com base em teorias mais recentes de especialistas no tema. Por fim, o trabalho confirmou ser recomendável um limite máximo de sulfatos solúveis na faixa entre 0,1 % e 0,2 %, sobre a massa de agregados reciclados para argamassas. Estes níveis são preconizados por instituição alemã especializada em durabilidade de alvenarias. Concluiu-se que também pode ser adotado o critério da DIN 4226-100 (< 600 mg/L de SO4), compatível com a faixa citada. / This is an abstract of a Master of Science project carried out at EPUSP, Universidade de São Paulo, Brazil, aimed at investigating the effects of the use of recycled aggregates contaminated by small contents of gypsum plaster on masonry mortars. In the presence of moisture and by the action of gypsum minerals or other more complex ones that may occur, there is the risk of the formation of cracks, efflorescence, and progressive deterioration of the masonry walls. An experimental program was thus developed for the rapid assessment of these processes by assessing the chemical, physical and mechanical properties of twenty mortar mixes. Local materials used for masonry and concrete in Socorro-SP, Brazil, were selected, as in that location there exists a recycling unit producing recycled sand for mortars with a high content of fines. Four recycled aggregates of very fine grain size and similar to each other were artificially produced by controlled construction, demolition and recycling processes. Thus a recycled, non-contaminated aggregate (A1, with SO3 content equal to 0,2 %) and three other identical ones were studied, with expected progressive contamination (A2, A3 and A4, that result with a total SO3 content about 0,5 % to 0,6 %). Four groups of mortars were thus produced with varying cement content (200, 150 and 100 kg/m3), cement type (Brazilian CP II and CP III) and also with and without the use of a comercial hydrated lime, Brazilian type CH III (of a high carbonate filler content). The anhydrous recycled aggregate content in the mortars varied between 1300 and 1200 kg/m3. In each group a blended mortar was also produced, containing very pure quartzous sand, of grain size and mix proportions closer to standard masonry mortars. The approach followed in the experimental program was accelerated aging test of mortars, starting at 63 days of age and at 7 day cycles in the wet chamber, alternated by 7 days in the ventilated oven at 40 oC. This cycling was adopted after critical bibliographical research and under a holistic process of deterioration set up by Collepardi (2003), also for gypsum-contaminated aggregates. From 63 days of age, the following properties were regularly characterized for the mortars: flexural modulus (tensile strength in bending), compressive strength, and static and dynamic elasticity modulus. During cycling, complementary tests were done of thermogravimetrical analysis and quantitative chemical analysis of total soluble sulphate in mortars. A number of the mortar test specimens was left in the dry chamber and tested at 175 days, including tendency to efflorescence. In between 63 and 175 days, 8 weathering cycles were done, and it was concluded that the main mechanical property affected during cycling was tensile strength in bending (indirect tensile strength) of mortars, and this occurred from 91 days, in the four groups of mortars containing recycled aggregates, and in between 63 and 91 days a significant evolution was measured of carbonation by thermogravimetry. The groups of mixed mortars with cement and hydrated lime showed better performance in this study than the plain cement and fine sand mortars, also as regards efflorescence. The results here obtained are to be seen as restricted to this case study, yet they allow us to conclude that the use of recycled aggregates containing even low levels of gypsum plaster as impurity in the production of mortars was sufficient to produce significant alterations in the mechanical performance, as well as the degree of soluble sulphate of mortars, that got altered in a way coherent with the cycling process, and it is possible to interpret this based on more recent theories by experts in the subject. Last, this work confirmed that it is advisable to look for a maximum soluble sulphate limit ranging from 0,1 % to 0,2 % by weight of recycled aggregates for mortars. Such levels was set up by a German institution specializing in masonry durability. It was also concluded that the requirements of DIN 4226-100 (< 600 mg/L of SO4) can be used as appropriate in the range mentioned.

Previous issue date: 2007 / Resumo / Resumo: O gesso é um aglomerante que tem sido muito empregado em revestimento de paredes. Apresenta um bom desempenho, é econômico e de fácil aplicação, mas limitado ao uso interno devido a sua sensibilidade à água. Algumas tentativas têm sido realizadas para melhorar a sua utilização em ambientes sujeitos à umidade. Neste sentido, pesquisas avançam na tentativa de empregar diferentes adições como resinas epóxi, polímeros, cimentos, escórias, impermeabilizantes, entre outros. O objetivo desta tese foi avaliar o desempenho das misturas de gesso com cimento Portland de Alto Forno e sílica ativa nos revestimentos internos e externos sujeitos à umidade. Para isso verificaram-se as propriedades macroscópicas das misturas por meio de ensaios físicos, químicos, físico-químicos e também a avaliação microestrutural utilizando a microscopia eletrônica de varredura. As misturas foram aplicadas em revestimentos de painéis de alvenaria de blocos de concreto e observados visualmente por um período de cinco anos. Além da observação visual foi verificada a resistência de aderência das misturas aplicadas internamente e externamente. Dos resultados obtidos observou-se uma possível coexistência entre o gesso e o cimento e que a adição de sílica ativa na mistura reduz a formação de etringita, principalmente nos revestimentos externos, sujeitos à umidade. A adição de cimento Portland melhora na abrasão e perda de massa, mesmo em idades mais avançadas. Assim, devido ao elevado custo de algumas adições, e as dificuldades de trabalhar com outros tipos de adição na obra, a adição de cimento Portland e sílica ativa ao gesso permitem uma melhoria de resistência, obtendo um revestimento de baixo custo e de fácil manuseio. / Abstract / Abstract: Plaster of Paris is a binding material being used in masonry as a plaster finish coat. Despite being economical, having good performance as and ease with wich it is applied in building, its use is limited to indoors. Some attempts has been made to improve its performance in external environment. In that sense, researches advance in the attempt at using several admixtures like epoxy resins, polymers, cements slags, waterproofing materials among other things. The objective of this thesis is to assess the performance of certain mixtures of rendering material containing plaster of Paris, slag cement and condensed silica fume when applied in the internal and external plaster finish coat. The macroscopic properties of the mixtures were analyzed through physical and chemical tests and also in SEM. Mixtures were applied on coatings of brick and mortar and visually inspected within five years. Bond strengths of the mixtures were measured, both in internal and external walls. Results showed compatibility between plaster of Paris and slag cement and that presence of condensed silica fume in the mixture reduced the formation of etringite, especially in the external coatings. The addition of Portland blastfurnace slag cement reduced the abrasion and the loss of mass, even in older ages. Therefore, due to the high cost of some admixtures, and the difficulty in working with other kinds of admixtures in the construction sites, the mentioned additions to the plaster rendering allow a mechanical strength improvement, thus resulting in low cost and good workability of the plaster finish coat. / Doutorado / Edificações / Doutor em Engenharia Civil

Cubes of coal have been tested in compression in the past, and it has been found. that the following formula, relating the compressive strength to the size of the cube can be applied:
P = k .a- n
Where P is the compressive strength in pounds per square inch.
a is the edge dimension os specimens tested.
n is a constant.
k is a constant.
The value of n has been found by a majority of people working on coal to be 0.5, however, lower values have also been found.
In this study limestone shale and Plaster of Paris cubes, varying in size between one and three inches, and one and five inches in the case of shale, were tested in compression. The results were converted to logarithmic form, and the value of n determined for each material. It was found for the limestone and the Plaster of Paris that the value of n was close to zero over the range of sizes tested, indicating that the strength is independent of the size of the spec1men over the range one inch to three inch cubes. A value of 0.20 was found for the shale over the range one inch to five inches.
The Griffith crack theory of failure gives the following result:

Where P is the compressive strength in pounds per square inch.

Thus, depending upon the relationship between c and a, the Griffith theory predicts that the value of n should be 0.5 for cracked materials where the length of crack is directly proportional to the edge dimension of the specimen, and zero where the length of crack is independent of the edge dimension of the specimen, in relatively uncracked materials. The effect of bedding errors on the accuracy of plate load testsBarnard, Hendrik Francois Taljaard January 2013 (has links)
A series of plate load tests were conducted at the experimental farm of the University of
Pretoria. The test areas were levelled by means of three surface preparation methods namely,
i) a thin layer of plaster of Paris; ii) a thin layer of well-graded sand and iii) by using only
hand tools. In addition, a modified plate load test was designed to eliminate the effect of
bedding errors that occur during these tests. Telescopic probes were used to measure the
relative displacement at two points below the centre of the plate. The main objective of this
research project was to first quantify the bedding errors that occur during plate load tests.
Secondly, to evaluate the three different surface preparation methods used in plate load tests
to achieve a levelled and smooth test surface, and lastly to evaluate the effectiveness of using
telescopic probes in routine plate load tests to eliminate the effects of bedding errors. The
stiffness values, determined from the vertical displacement of the plate, were compared with
the internal stiffness values determined by means of the telescopic probes. All stiffness values
were compared with continuous surface wave (CSW) measurements performed on the same
material. The test apparatus, methods and results are discussed in this dissertation.

In dieser Arbeit wurde der Einfluss verschiedener Additive (Carbonsäuren, Phosphonsäuren und Retardan P) auf die einzelnen Teilprozesse des Abbindens von Gips an technischen und synthetischen Halbhydraten unter vergleichbaren Bedingungen untersucht. Vorrangig bei der Keimbildung und beim Kristallwachstum wurde ein Einfluss der Additive beobachtet. Das pH-abhängige Wirkungsoptimum kann mit der Speziation der Additive erklärt werden. Ihre Wirkung wird durch Adsorption auf CaSO4-Oberflächen verursacht. Die Untersuchungen ergaben eine bevorzugte Ca-Affinität mit den Flächen (120) und (001) zunehmend von Citronensäure über Weinsäure, HEDP zu HDTMP. Die in verdünnten homogenen Lösungen erhaltenen Ergebnisse sind nicht direkt auf den Abbindeprozess in Pasten übertragbar. In-situ Ramanspektroskopie und Auswaschexperimente weisen in Pasten auf irreversible Adsorption und ein Überwachsen der Additive hin, was zur Abnahme ihrer Wirkung führt. Auf die Festigkeit der abgebundenen Gipskörper zeigen die Additive kaum Einfluss.

Manufacture and Evaluation of Cast Aluminum Foam Heat ExchangersSamudre, Prabha January 2015 (has links) (PDF)
Metal foams have many attractive properties such as light weight, low relative density, energy absorption capability etc. One of the main advantages of metal foam is that the foam inherits several properties of the parent metal, at the same time, at a fraction of the weight. Metal foams are basically of two types; closed pore and open pore. In the open pore configuration the highly porous structure with large surface to volume ratio is attractive in thermal applications such as heat exchangers, small scale refrigeration, diesel exhaust cooling and heat sink for electronics. Large surface area to volume ratio of the heat transfer area is an important parameter in design of heat exchangers.
Application of open cell metal foam as a heat exchanger involves production of the metal foam, cutting/drilling the metal foam to required dimensions and attaching it to a substrate or duct. Foams are cut by various methods such as by using circular saw, band saw, abrasive sawing wire or electrical discharge machining. Cutting or drilling operations plastically deform the struts and affect the surface roughness of the struts and hence, the contact area between the foam and the substrate. The foam and the substrate are then joined to get the final product. Various techniques are adopted to join the foam and substrate that includes, press fit, welding, soldering, brazing and use of epoxy adhesives or thermal glue. These methods either deform the foam plastically or involve a bonding material which involves an additional step in manufacturing and is generally necessary to reduce the thermal resistance at the interface. Every secondary step involved in machining the foam and joining it to substrate/duct add to the energy, time and cost of the component. Significant amount of materials wastage occurs during the production and machining steps of the metal foam. Bonding material used for attaching foam to the substrate makes the recycling of the heat exchangers difficult.
In the present research work the above issues were rectified by introducing a novel method of fabricating the heat exchanger in a single step. This can be done by producing open cell foam, bonded to the substrate in a single step to get the ready to use heat exchanger. The uniqueness of the method/ process is that it provides an advantage of manufacturing heat exchangers consisting of open cell aluminium foam both inside and outside the aluminium duct/substrate. Here open cell metal foam is metallurgic ally bonded to the aluminium duct without producing any distortion in the aluminium duct. The present method avoids the secondary cutting and joining operations, hence reducing material and energy wastage. This heat exchanger does not need a bonding material at the foam duct interface which makes the product completely recyclable without even having to separate the aluminium foam and, many-at-times, the copper substrate. Further, in the present process no hazardous material is involved in the fabrication process of the heat exchanger and all the materials used for the foam production can be recycled. Another unique advantage of this process is that the foam can also be cast inside and outside the tube in a single step. This helps increase the heat transfer area per unit volume inside the tube increasing the effectiveness significantly.
First, an attempt was made to cast aluminium foam over a Cu substrate. Spheres made of Plaster of Paris (PoP) were used as space holders to create pores in the foam. First, a dough of PoP was prepared by mixing sufficient amount of water with the powder of PoP. Small pieces of PoP were taken from the dough and were rolled by hands to prepare spherical balls. Next, a casting setup was made where a die made of stainless steel was placed in a crucible whose bottom was filled with sand. A tube/duct made of copper was placed at the centre of the die and PoP balls were dropped around the duct. This setup was then placed in a furnace and was preheated to remove all the moisture from the PoP. Molten aluminium at around 700 °C was poured into the preheated die. After solidification, the die was opened and cast was allowed to cool in ambient air. PoP balls were removed by using a sharp needle and by dipping the casting in acetic acid. After removal of PoP from the cast, interconnected holes/cavities formed in the place of space holders/PoP balls, forming pores in the foam. There are some limitations of this method such as removal of PoP was tedious and needed chemicals that need to be discarded, PoP cannot be recycled and creates waste, small amount of moisture present in PoP balls can cause an explosion. The bonding between aluminium foam and Cu substrate obtained was not good, giving rise to thermal contact resistance. Due to the above limitations further implementation of this process using PoP was not explored further.
There was a need of space holder material which can withstand the temperature of molten Al and also can be removed easily from the cast without any use of chemicals. Obtaining metallic bonding between foam and Cu substrate was difficult due to the corrosion layer formation at the interface of Al and Cu substrate due to preheating. If preheating was not carried out full penetration of the molten aluminium did not take place in the space available in between the spheres.
Therefore, it was decided to cast Al foam over Al substrate. The main challenge and difficulty was to cast open cell Al foam inside and outside the tube/duct made of the same material (Al) without distorting the tube/duct as well as achieving consistent metallic bonding between the two. This has been successfully done by gravity casting method a single step manufactured and ready to use open cell Al foam heat exchanger were fabricated. A casting setup was prepared, which consisted of a commercially pure aluminium tube placed in the middle of a stainless steel split die. The gap between the tube and die was filled with the salt spheres. An uncommon and new approach was adopted to produce NaCl salt spheres. NaCl salt balls (spherical and ovoid) of different diameters were processed by casting route. The casting step of NaCl is necessary as the moisture present in NaCl can be completely removed during the melting of NaCl. NaCl was chosen as it had a melting point higher than aluminium. The casting setup was placed in a furnace and was preheated to various temperatures up to 550 °C. Commercially pure aluminium was melted separately in a crucible and was poured into the steel die at 700oC. The liquid metal flows through the die and fills the cavities between the salt balls. The die was opened immediately after solidification of molten Al and cast was allowed to cool in ambient air. The salt (NaCl), which was still solid, was dissolved in water to get the foam structure. With proper control of the preheat temperature and temperature of liquid aluminium no distortion of the aluminium duct was observed throughout the length of the heat exchanger. Consistent and complete fusion/ metallic bonding was observed at the interface of Al foam and Al substrate/duct. Several heat exchangers with different porosity and pore geometry with the aluminium foam cast outside the tube and both inside and outside of the tube were fabricated.
The beauty of the designed method is that it is simple and cost effective and eliminates the major issue of thermal contact resistance since the foam and the duct are made of the same material and are bonded in the liquid state leaving no interface between the foam and the duct. Further, foam can also be cast inside the duct in the same step while casting the foam outside the tube, giving an integral heat exchanger which has higher heat transfer surface area to volume ratio inside and outside the duct. This is expected to further improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the heat exchanger
An added advantage of this method is that the heat exchanger can be recycled easily in a single step re-melting route. Further, the heat exchanger does not use any hazardous material during manufacture that needs attention during recycling.
After the production and fabrication of the heat exchangers, the thermal performance or effectiveness of the heat exchangers was assessed, to evaluate its usefulness and suitability for heat transfer application. An experimental test setup was fabricated in the laboratory to perform the heat transfer tests. The experimental test setup consists of the following major components;1) A test chamber whose function was to insulate the heat exchangers from the surroundings and to avoid any heat loss to the surroundings, 2) An air blower used to supply cold fluid (air) to the test chamber, 3) A constant temperature bath was used to supply the hot fluid, which was water in this case, in the duct of the heat exchanger, 4) A rotameter was used to measure the volumetric flow rate of the cold fluid and 5) A pressure gauge having the pressure measurement range between 1 mbar to 160 mbar to measure the pressure drop across the test chamber. K-type chromel – alumel thermocouples having temperature measurement range between -270 °C to 1,260 °C were used to measure the temperature of hot and cold fluids during the experiments. By aid of the data logger system and computer, temperature readings were recorded during the tests and were used further for the heat transfer calculations.
For testing the aluminium foam heat exchangers was placed in the insulated test chamber. Hot water was supplied inside the duct of heat exchanger whereas air at room temperature was supplied around the foams at varying flow rates during the tests. During the tests, temperature readings were taken at steady state condition. NTU-Effectiveness method was used to evaluate the thermal performance of heat exchangers.
Overall results obtained by this experimental study are as follows
• As the inlet temperature difference between hot and the cold fluids increases the heat transfer rate and the effectiveness of the heat exchangers also increases.
• At a constant flow rate of hot fluid, heat exchangers exhibits significantly better thermal performance at lower flow rate of cold fluid compared to higher flow rate. As the flow rate of cold fluid increases, the velocity of the fluid increases and consequently, reduces the optimum interaction time between hot and the cold fluids required for the efficient heat transfer.
• At a constant and low flow rate of cold fluid the effectiveness of the heat exchanger increases as the porosity of the foam increases. But when the flow rate of cold fluid was increased further after a certain limit, the effectiveness value of the heat exchanger decreases.
• Heat exchanger consisting of foam of higher porosity exhibits higher effective.
• Heat exchanger having foam inside and outside of the duct/tube exhibits significantly higher effectiveness compared to Al duct, Cu duct and other heat exchanger tested.
• At a higher flow rate of the cold fluid, the heat exchangers consisting of foams of higher porosity, experience more drop in effectiveness compared to the heat exchanger having foams of low porosity.
• Pressure drop across the length of the foam/fin increases as the volumetric flow rate of the cold fluid (m3/s) increases.
• Surface area per unit volume and effectiveness values for bare Al tube is very low compared to Al foam heat exchangers resulting in the bare Al tube exhibiting much lower effectiveness compared to heat exchanger made of Al foam.
• For a certain flow rate of fluids, the effectiveness of the heat exchanger increases up to a certain thickness of the Al foam.
• Regardless of the thickness of the foam, the effectiveness of the heat exchangers is low at higher flow rate of cold fluid compared to lower flow rate.
• These foam based heat exchanger had a much higher effectiveness when compared to that of other heat exchangers, data of which were got from literature.
The present experimental study concludes that fuse bonding open cell aluminium foam over an Al duct or Al substrate can improve the thermal performance of the heat exchanger significantly.
The thesis includes five chapters. Chapter 1 gives a detailed introduction about the metal foam, heat exchangers, thermal contact resistance and its effect on the heat transfer rate has been explained. This chapter also includes the overall aim and motivation for the research work.
Chapter 2 covers the literature available on production methods of metal foam and its limitations has been listed out. And conventional methods of manufacturing open cell metal foam heat exchangers and its disadvantages have been explained in detailed.
Chapter 3 covers in detail the novel method of production and fabrication of open cell metal foam heat exchangers.
Chapter 4 includes an experimental study, where thermal performance of heat exchangers has been assessed through heat transfer experiments.
Chapter 5 is the conclusions and future works.

In dieser Arbeit wurde der Einfluss verschiedener Additive (Carbonsäuren, Phosphonsäuren und Retardan P) auf die einzelnen Teilprozesse des Abbindens von Gips an technischen und synthetischen Halbhydraten unter vergleichbaren Bedingungen untersucht. Vorrangig bei der Keimbildung und beim Kristallwachstum wurde ein Einfluss der Additive beobachtet. Das pH-abhängige Wirkungsoptimum kann mit der Speziation der Additive erklärt werden. Ihre Wirkung wird durch Adsorption auf CaSO4-Oberflächen verursacht. Die Untersuchungen ergaben eine bevorzugte Ca-Affinität mit den Flächen (120) und (001) zunehmend von Citronensäure über Weinsäure, HEDP zu HDTMP. Die in verdünnten homogenen Lösungen erhaltenen Ergebnisse sind nicht direkt auf den Abbindeprozess in Pasten übertragbar. In-situ Ramanspektroskopie und Auswaschexperimente weisen in Pasten auf irreversible Adsorption und ein Überwachsen der Additive hin, was zur Abnahme ihrer Wirkung führt. Auf die Festigkeit der abgebundenen Gipskörper zeigen die Additive kaum Einfluss.

Comparison of different aluminium casting processes from an environmental perspective : Case study on plaster mould castings produced in Mid SwedenSchaub, Henning January 2018 (has links)
While Aluminium has lots of unique properties and is seen as a material of the future, its production and manufacturing has significant environmental impacts. For complex and dimensional shapes casting remains the main manufacturing method and in this study the environmental pressure of different casting techniques is compared. A screening LCA is conducted to determine the environmental impacts of plaster mould castings in a case study at the Ventana Hackås AB foundry in Mid Sweden. The findings are compared to models of sand, pressure die and lost wax castings, based on literature datasets. The most relevant factors for the environmental performance are identified as the production of the aluminium alloy and the amount and source of energy. For plaster mould castings additionally the plaster consumption is significant, while lost wax castings are dominated by the mould production and general processes. Under similar circumstances a relatively similar performance was found for all casting techniques except the lost wax process, which is at least 3 times more emission intensive. Of the remaining techniques pressure die castings performed the best and plaster mould castings the worst, but different sources of uncertainties have been identified in this comparison. In addition a carbon footprint interface is created based on these findings, to enable specific comparisons of different casting method setups. Customizable variables allow the adaptation of three scenarios to real world conditions. As the main influencing factors the aluminium alloy, source of electricity and casting technique have been identified. / <p>2018-10-10</p>
