Putting down roots: the emergence of wild plant food production on the Canadian plateauPeacock, Sandra Leslie 12 April 2013 (has links)
This research traces the emergence of wild plant food production during the Late
Prehistoric Period (4500 to 200 BP) on the Canadian Plateau. It builds upon
ecological-evolutionary perspectives offered by theories of people-plant interactions and
models of plant food production. From this, it derives a general model of wild plant food
production outlining the components of such systems, the conditions favouring their
development, and the consequences and correlates of these activities. This general
model is expanded and made specific to the Canadian Plateau through ethnographic,
ethnobotanical, ecological and archaeological evidence for root resource use by the
Secwepemc (Shuswap) and other Interior Salish peoples. The implications of these
findings for reconstructions of Late Prehistoric culture change are discussed.
The study has two components. It begins by demonstrating that historically, the
Interior Salish peoples were not plant collectors, "adapting to" the environment, but
plant food producers who "domesticated" the landscapes of the region. Ethnobotanical
evidence indicates the Secwepemc managed. processed and stored a variety of plant
resources to increase their productivity and availability. These actions ensured surpluses
for overwintering, reducing the threat of recurrent seasonal resource stress.
Root foods were particularly important. At least 20 species were regularly
harvested and stored. Practices associated with harvesting were essentially horticultural
and acted at the species, population and landscape levels to increase the density and
distribution of targeted species. The productivity of root resources was also increased
through processing in earth ovens. An experimental reconstruction of an Interior Salish
ii
earth oven found pitcooking increased the energy value of balsamroot (Balsamorhiza
sagittata), a former root staple, by 250 percent. Balsamroot contains inulin, a complex
carbohydrate indigestible in its raw form.
The second component of this study traces the beginnings of these wild plant
food production systems through the archaeology of earth ovens. The discussion begins
with Komkanetkwa, a traditional root gathering ground of the SeC\\<"epemc located near
Kamloops, British Columbia, where investigations identified the remains of 170 earth
ovens, II of which were excavated. Similar data from four additional root processing
locales, including the Upper Hat Creek Valley, Oregon Jack Creek and Potato Mountain
on the Canadian Plateau and the Calispell Valley on the Columbia Plateau, are also
presented.
Analysis of site types and distributions, the structure and content of earth ovens
and radiocarbon age estimates associated with them reveals root food production began
approximately 3100 years ago on the Canadian Plateau. The broad pattern of root
resource use, consistent with ethnographic expectations, is well-developed after 2500 BP
and persists until historic times. Radiocarbon age estimates (n=30) indicate a peak in
activity developing between 2250 and 1750 BP.
A review of the paleoenvironmental and culture-historical context identified the
conditions, consequences and correlates of these processes. The catalyst for the
development of these strategies was a dramatic decline in temperatures approximately
3900 years ago. This ushered in a 2000-year period recognized as the coldest and
wettest stage of the Holocene, one characterized by long, cold winters. Under these
conditions, wild plant food production represents a risk reduction strategy developed by peoples of the Canadian Plaeeau to cope with the uncertainty of seasohnal and annual environmental variation and prolonged periods of resource scarcity. In sum, earth ovens are the archaeological manifestations of fundamental shift in the process of people-plant interactions -- the transition fro foraging to wild plant food production which occurred on the Canadian Plateau at least 3100 years ago. This transition represents the adoption of strategies designed to ensure the productivity and availability of plant resources, particularly storable carbohydrates derived from roots, for overwintering. / Graduate / 0473

The career plateau among professional/technical specialists in the federal governmentHoran, Mary Jo January 1988 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to examine the phenomenon of career plateauing from the point of view of professional/technical specialists employed by the federal government. Answers were sought to the following questions: What effect, if any, does plateauing have on those experiencing it? Does plateauing grow in importance and effect over time? What can be done to alleviate any adverse effects of plateauing?
A qualitative, descriptive survey was conducted wherein thirty-five scientists and engineers participated in in-depth interviews relating to their jobs and careers. The data gathered was coded and displayed so that comparisons could be made across the five groups which comprised the sample. The groups were (a) younger, shorter plateaued, (b) older, shorter plateaued, (c) younger, longer plateaued, (d) older, longer plateaued, and (e) non-plateaued.
It was found that the younger, shorter plateaued subjects who were in the early stages of their careers did not experience negative reactions to plateauing. It did become problematic in mid career for some respondents but not for others. The career anchor (a concept developed by Edgar Schein) of the subject was the determining factor as to whether or not plateauing was troublesome. Those respondents anchored in technical/functional competence were either slightly or not at all concerned with their plateaued status. Those anchored in managerial competence were greatly concerned. By late career, the negative reactions to plateauing had abated for the managerially anchored and had disappeared for those anchored in technical/functional competence. Suggestions made by the respondents to mitigate any negative effects to plateauing were presented. / Ph. D.

A 2D Electrical Resistivity Survey of Palsas in Tavvavuoma, sub-arctic Sweden / Undersökning av palsar med hjälp av elektrisk resistivitetstomografi i Tavvavuoma, norra SverigeMarklund, Per January 2014 (has links)
Electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) is a commonly used geophysical method to investigate permafrost in the mountain environment, but few studies have employed this method in a permafrost affected peatland. For this thesis, 5 ERT profiles were measured over 17 palsas and peat-plateaus in a palsa peatland environment in Tavvavuoma, northern Sweden, where the primary aim was to investigate the depth to the base of permafrost under the mounds. These depths are also used to estimate the excess ice fraction (EIF), which is indicative of the proportion of segregation ice in the frozen core under the mounds. The internal structure of palsas and the spatial distribution of permafrost was also investigated from the inverted resistivity models. Permafrost thickness was found to range from 5 – 17 m, with the thickest permafrost in the west end of the study area. EIF values range between 0,04 to 0,58, with the lowest values in the same end as the deepest permafrost, where also low mound elevations are found. The deep permafrost combined with low mound elevations are suggested to be attributed to the presence of coarse grained (glaciofluvial) sediments where ice segregation formation is limited, thus small amounts of frost heave. Deep permafrost is possibly underlying at least two thermokarst depressions/fens in the area, which is suggested to obstruct their drainage. The height of the mounds was surprisingly found to decrease with permafrost thickness, a relationship that is likely to be an effect of the varied underlying sediment cover. This thesis demonstrates the applicability of ERT in peatland permafrost research, but also considers the limitations of the method.

Skloňování variace: O pojmu multiplicity u Gillesa Deleuze / The declension of variation. On the notion of multiplicity in Gilles DeleuzeBastidas Bolaños, David Antonio January 2021 (has links)
The declension of variation. On the notion of multiplicity in Gilles Deleuze This paper aims at a reconstruction of the notion of multiplicity in the thought of the French philosopher Gilles Deleuze. To this end, our guiding thread corresponds to the relationship that this thinker establishes between the mathematical doctrine of Bernhard Riemann and the philosophy of Henri Bergson. Our purpose is to go through the various appearances of this relationship and to reconstruct the fundamental axes of an original concept of multiplicity that we believe Deleuze's thought holds. Thus, our inquiry, via a strategic journey through the Bergsonism, A Thousand Plateaus and Difference and Repetition, uncovers a double articulation for the deleuzian multiplicity. This double articulation is expressed in the two axes of thematization that we develop, namely coherence and inherence, or in other terms, a multidimensional organization and an activity of internal division. From these two axes, we believe, the notion of multiplicity describes the dynamics proper to a mouvement of continuous change or variation of nature. Keywords : Deleuze, Multiplicity, Variation, Bergson, Riemann, Bergsonism, A Thousand Plateaus, Difference and repetition.

Geohistory of the Central Anatolian Plateau southern margin (southern Turkey)Radeff, Giuditta January 2014 (has links)
The Adana Basin of southern Turkey, situated at the SE margin of the Central Anatolian Plateau is ideally located to record Neogene topographic and tectonic changes in the easternmost Mediterranean realm. Using industry seismic reflection data we correlate 34 seismic profiles with corresponding exposed units in the Adana Basin. The time-depth conversion of the interpreted seismic profiles allows us to reconstruct the subsidence curve of the Adana Basin and to outline the occurrence of a major increase in both subsidence and sedimentation rates at 5.45 – 5.33 Ma, leading to the deposition of almost 1500 km3 of conglomerates and marls. Our provenance analysis of the conglomerates reveals that most of the sediment is derived from and north of the SE margin of the Central Anatolian Plateau. A comparison of these results with the composition of recent conglomerates and the present drainage basins indicates major changes between late Messinian and present-day source areas. We suggest that these changes in source areas result of uplift and ensuing erosion of the SE margin of the plateau. This hypothesis is supported by the comparison of the Adana Basin subsidence curve with the subsidence curve of the Mut Basin, a mainly Neogene basin located on top of the Central Anatolian Plateau southern margin, showing that the Adana Basin subsidence event is coeval with an uplift episode of the plateau southern margin. The collection of several fault measurements in the Adana region show different deformation styles for the NW and SE margins of the Adana Basin. The weakly seismic NW portion of the basin is characterized by extensional and transtensional structures cutting Neogene deposits, likely accomodating the differential uplift occurring between the basin and the SE margin of the plateau. We interpret the tectonic evolution of the southern flank of the Central Anatolian Plateau and the coeval subsidence and sedimentation in the Adana Basin to be related to deep lithospheric processes, particularly lithospheric delamination and slab break-off.

Estudo do relevo e dos solos da bacia do Rio Preto - Espinhaço Meridional - MG / Study of relief and soils of the basin of the Rio Preto - Meridional Espinhaço MGBeato, Daniela 19 December 2012 (has links)
As feições do relevo, sofrem grande controle estrutural e tectônico, principalmente no alto curso. No médio e baixo curso dominam as feições de relevo ligadas a erosão e a estrutura. / his paper presents the results of the study of relief and soils of the basin of the Rio Preto, northcentral region of Minas Gerais state, located in the city of São Gonçalo do Rio Preto, part of the Parque Estadual do Rio Preto. Rio Preto is a important tributary of the Rio Araçuaí which is a tributary of Jequitinhonha. The Black River basin is inserted into the Meridional Espinhaço mountain range, due to the tectonic structure with compressive thrust in Mezoproterozic on quartzite rocks. The Charter Exploratory Soil was prepared through descriptions of soil profiles in the field, and literature developed by members of the research project, which is part of this work, the spatial order of the information. The Charter Morphologic was built by the restitution of aerial photographs on scales of 1:40.000 and 1: 60.000. The predominance of quartzite makes the region presents a rigid cover, fractured and sheared. Thus, given the strong structural control in this region, this work was performed analyzes of morphometric parameters: morphometric analysis, analysis of the drainage network, through investigation of drainage patterns, drainage anomalies, lineaments drainage, asymmetry parameters related to network hidrographic, drainage density of texture, in order to verify the tectonic influence on Rio Preto basin, beyond the already prominent structural control. The analysis of morphometric parameters allowed us to understand the evolution of the spatial distribution of soils and relief in the basin of the Rio Preto, because they present evidence on patterns of tectonic dissection of relief distribution and formation of pedological substrate. Therefore, the analysis of morphometric parameters confirmed a strong structural control and tectonic basin of the Black River. Therefore, the distribution of soil and relief features are greatly influenced by this control. The soils of the basin were included in three soil systems: laterite, podzolic and Litodependent, have a very particular distribution. In the upper course soils predominate system podzolic and some litho-dependent. In the middle and lower course dominate the laterite soils belonging to the system, with litho-dependent on slopes more pronounced. The relief features, suffer major structural and tectonic control, especially in the upper reaches. In the middle and lower course dominate the features of erosion and relief linked structure.
