It's all a plot : an examination of the usefulness of the popularly accepted structural paradigm in the practice of writing of a feature film script

Morris, Anthony Kevin January 2008 (has links)
This study took the widely-accepted, ‘industry standard’ Structural Paradigm of feature film plotting, and ‘road tested’ it, assessing its value as a tool in the process of actually writing a feature film script. The methodology employed was to write a feature film script (titled THE ARM THAT DOES THE HARM) and look to apply the Paradigm to the writing process. Journals recording the process were kept and peer assessment undertaken. The data from these sources was then analysed and conclusions drawn. The reason for and value of this study are that, while this Paradigm is widely espoused by screenwriting gurus, taught as part of film courses and applied as a tool of script assessment and review, there is very little documented evidence of its actual value to the practice of writing a script. My findings revealed that, though a useful reference point throughout, the Paradigm is most valuable during the early stages of story structuring and again, most particularly, when editing later drafts. An important outcome of this study was that it identified the Paradigm as a valuable tool, not a rule that must be adhered to, a series of points a narrative must be seen to ‘hit’ in order for it to be considered to have been told correctly. Further, this study demonstrated in practice how this tool can be applied. This study suggests that trying to force an evolving story into the confines of the Paradigm can inhibit the story from developing ‘organically’ from its characters. Rather, the Paradigm should be applied as a tool for helping shape stories that first and foremost should be character-driven.

A Method for Plotting Isohyetal Maps Using an Analog Computer

Kirwan, Maurice George 01 May 1969 (has links)
The ability of the analog computer to stimulate physical phenomena is used in conjunction with a resistance paper model of the Walnut Gulch watershed in Arizona to plot constant precipitation maps from data obtained from recorded rainfall. Voltages which are proportional to rainfall at a specific raingage, located at scaled points of the resistance paper model, set up an electric field on the resistive sheet which is detected and processed by the computer. The detected potential is compared to a reference potential, or "precipitation value", and the necessary analog networks allow plotting of the equipotential line which is directly analogous to an isohyetal line.

Using C# and WPF to Create Fast Plots for Telemetry Analysis on Large Data Sets

Burns, Steven, Endress, William 10 1900 (has links)
ITC/USA 2014 Conference Proceedings / The Fiftieth Annual International Telemetering Conference and Technical Exhibition / October 20-23, 2014 / Town and Country Resort & Convention Center, San Diego, CA / Upon completion of a test where telemetry(TM) data was collected, the resulting TM file will usually contain millions of data points. Traditionally MatLab™, Mathlab™, or some third party software is used to plot the data. These methods may not always be desirable due to the expense of licensing, restrictions on the ability to create custom graphs and the inability to quickly plot large amounts of data. These problems were solved by using Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) graphics capabilities in conjunction with C# to develop a unique set of algorithms to display custom graphs of unlimited size with quick response.

Developing a new 2D-plotting package for OpenModelica

Kapidzic, Haris January 2011 (has links)
OpenModelica is an open-source based development environment for Modelica, and an open source modelling and simulation platform. One of the main reasons for this thesis is the desire to change the existing plotting package into something more future safe due to performance issues of the existing plotting package in the OpenModelica framework. The package should be used in all OpenModelica tools, OMEdit, OMShell, and OMNotebook. The second part of the thesis includes implementing two additional shapes, a text shape and a bitmap shape to OpenModelicas graphical editor OMEdit. As a result of this work, a new plotting tool was developed and adopted as part of the OpenModelica platform; OMPlot.

Three-dimensional plotted hydroxyapatite scaffolds with predefined architecture: comparison of stabilization by alginate cross-linking versus sintering

Kumar, Alok, Akkineni, Ashwini R., Basu, Bikramjit, Gelinsky, Michael 11 October 2019 (has links)
Scaffolds for bone tissue engineering are essentially characterized by porous three-dimensional structures with interconnected pores to facilitate the exchange of nutrients and removal of waste products from cells, thereby promoting cell proliferation in such engineered scaffolds. Although hydroxyapatite is widely being considered for bone tissue engineering applications due to its occurrence in the natural extracellular matrix of this tissue, limited reports are available on additive manufacturing of hydroxyapatite-based materials. In this perspective, hydroxyapatite-based three-dimensional porous scaffolds with two different binders (maltodextrin and sodium alginate) were fabricated using the extrusion method of three-dimensional plotting and the results were compared in reference to the structural properties of scaffolds processed via chemical stabilization and sintering routes, respectively. With the optimal processing conditions regarding to pH and viscosity of binder-loaded hydroxyapatite pastes, scaffolds with parallelepiped porous architecture having up to 74% porosity were fabricated. Interestingly, sintering of the as-plotted hydroxyapatite–sodium alginate (cross-linked with CaCl₂ solution) scaffolds led to the formation of chlorapatite (Ca₉.₅₄P₅.₉₈O₂₃.₈Cl₁.₆₀(OH)₂.₇₄). Both the sintered scaffolds displayed progressive deformation and delayed fracture under compressive loading, with hydroxyapatite–alginate scaffolds exhibiting a higher compressive strength (9.5±0.5 MPa) than hydroxyapatite–maltodextrin scaffolds (7.0±0.6 MPa). The difference in properties is explained in terms of the phase assemblage and microstructure

Despite of being widely used by psychodramatists, we couldn t find references in the literature with regards the potential of re-plotting, and as we consider it to be an appropriate instrument for research, our aim is to conduct a thorough analysis of this working method. The reason we chose to explore the role of grandparents is that there is significantly less research of these in comparison to the parental roles, and with the aging of the population the chances of people experiencing these roles have increased. We have analysed a re-plotting session that took place during a public psychodrama act, comparing the information obtained from this event with information from the relevant literature, and evaluating the actual process of replotting through which this information was gathered. It was shown that the grandparent role is a role linked with elderly people who give their grandchildren a sense of importance and self-worth, and allow them to feel part of a family history with the acknowledgement of their ancestry. It was also shown that through the use of re-plotting a wide range of information can be gathered about the explored roles, also allowing a comparison of individual and collective concepts. Furthermore, through group members reflections on the information obtained during the process, this method can also promote wellbeing.

Development of a Rotordynamic Signal Processing MATLAB Interface and a Two-Disk Rotor Model

Baker, David L 01 December 2017 (has links) (PDF)
Using MATLAB and a National Instruments data acquisition card, a signal processing program meant to monitor the behavior of rotordynamic systems in real-time was developed and tested. By using traditional analysis methods in this field of engineering, commonly desired data representations such as bode, polar, orbit, full spectrum plots were able to be produced to a very high accuracy. Additional capabilities offered by this application are slow roll compensation, synchronous and sub-synchronous filtering, and true three dimensional plotting. The verification of this program was done by comparing the results to the ones acquired with Bently Nevada’s “Automated Diagnostics for Rotating Equipment” (ADRE) system. In addition to a data acquisition program, theoretical models of the two-disk rotor were created to estimate the unknown physical parameters of the system. By simulating the rotor with and without gyroscopic effects included, estimates for the stiffness, damping, eccentricity, initial phase, and initial skew values present in the system were determined.

Project guidelines for urban settlements considering environmental assessment methods.

Negreiros, Iara 08 April 2009 (has links)
As many world-wide developed assessment methods for sustanability of isolated buildings and their constituting systems performance, new environmental assessment systems have recently been proposed, taking into account neighborhood, land sub-division and urbanistic issues. They integrate principles of smart growth, sustainable development and green building, such as Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design for Neighborhood Developments Rating System (LEED-ND), developed in the United States; Approche Environnementale de l\'Urbanisme (AEU), developed in France; Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Sustainability Report Guidelines, developed by United Nations; and many others. With new sustainability paradigms and difficulties on dealing specifically with sustainable cities grows, there are needs on selecting criteria, strategies and measurable indicators in order to anchoring formulation, controlling implementation and evaluating results of the urban policies in sustainable basis, according to the proposed guidelines of Global and Brazilian Agendas 21. However, in the last decades, the urban growth has happened in a dispersed form, by displacement process of typically urban activities for the rural areas, observed by the urban spots disposal in satellites images, as many urban polar regions separated by rural or open lands. Inserted in this context called \"diffuse urbanization\", the land sub-division by plotting is a model of urban growth that would cause significative impacts in landscape and ecology and, consequently, in the activities of urban planning. Therefore, with the general purpose of identifying, analyzing and recommending guidelines, this paper brings qualitative and comparative critical analysis of the many locally and internationally environmental assessment methods for urban plotting, through a case study methodology for a residential plotting, the Gênesis Project, in Santana do Parnaíba, municipality of São Paulo metropolitan region. The results are a set of guidelines, that considers the requisites and criteria of each method, in order to help designers in urban plotting project process and to contribute the improvement of urban legislation by public agents.
