Gordon / Widespread debates about scientific issues, from global warming to vaccinations, have raised questions about public trust in science and scientists. Many studies have attempted to determine the cause of observed declines in public trust. This project employs framing theory, suggesting that the way science frames research might improve public trust. Research questions explore whether political conservatism, public religiosity, and exposure to a feature story about a scientist affects trust in science and scientists. A between-subjects quasi-experiment exposed participants to feature articles about scientists in either controversial or non-controversial fields, and asked a series of questions in order to measure the participant’s trust in science and scientists. Results indicated that participants who were male or participants who had some college education and who read the non-controversial feature story were statistically more likely to have a higher level of trust in science and scientists than any other group. Suggestions for future studies are discussed.

The influence of right-wing political conservatism on support for democracy and the criminalization of social protest is analyzed in a sample of university students from the city of Lima (N = 201). As indicators of the right-wing political conservatism, measures of right-wing authoritarianism (RWA), social dominance orientation (SDO) and right-wing political orientation were used. Two path diagrams were proposed: the second diagram showed a proper degree of fit and proposes a positive covariance between RWA, SDO and right-wing political orientation. The diagram also suggests that RWA, SDO and right-wing political orientation exert a direct influence on the criminalization of social protest, while SDO and RWA exert an indirect influence on support for democracy. Finally, support for democracy present an inverse correlation with the criminalization of social protest. / Se analiza la influencia del conservadurismo político de derecha sobre el apoyo a la democracia y la criminalización de la protesta social en una muestra de estudiantes universitarios de Lima (N = 201). El conservadurismo político de derecha fue evaluado utilizando medidas de autoritarismo (RWA), orientación hacia la dominancia social (SDO) y orientación política de derecha. Dos diagramas de sendero (Path Analysis) fueron propuestos: el segundo diagrama presentó un ajuste adecuado y propone, en primer lugar, una covarianza positiva entre el RWA, la SDO y la orientación política de derecha. Asimismo, tanto el RWA, como la SDO y la orientación política de derecha ejercen una influencia directa sobre la criminalización de la protesta social, mientras solo la SDO y el RWA ejercen una influencia inversa sobre el apoyo a la democracia. Finalmente, se observa una correlación inversa entre el apoyo a la democracia y la criminalización de la protesta social.

The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the evidences of Conrad's conservative tastes and beliefs as indicated by his way of life and his associations, and to show, further, that this conservatism is revealed directly and indirectly in his stories and novels.

Fundado em 1989 e existente até 2006, o Prona representou uma alternativa de direita radical à ordem democrática brasileira, agregando diversos estratos do conservadorismo e autoritarismo político brasileiro após o fim do regime militar. Dessa maneira, a pesquisa se estrutura em dois eixos fundamentais e complementares. Em primeiro lugar, busca analisar a diversidade constituída pela própria agremiação, isto é, quais os caminhos percorridos por uma pequena legenda partidária que buscava eleger seu líder como Presidente da República. Além disso, a pesquisa objetivou analisar também a circularidade de ideias que permearam o partido político em questão, sobretudo no âmbito das cooperações da direita radical brasileira, seu preceitos e valores conservadores e autoritários. Founded in 1989 and existed until 2006, PRONA represented a radical right alternative to the Brazilian democratic order, adding several layers of Brazilian political conservatism and authoritariansm after the end of Military dictatorship. Thus, the research is divided into two core and complementary lines. First, is to analyze the diversity constituted by the Party, that is, which paths were taken by a small party label that sought to elect their leader as President. In addition, the research also aimed at analyzing the circularity of ideas that permeated the political party in question, particularly in the context of cooperation of the Brazilian radical right and its precepts and conservative and authoritarian values. In this way, seeks to analyze not only the trajectory of their own party, but also their relationships on a national and international scale.

This study analyses the influence of political conservatism on support for discrimination against domestic labourers and positive attitudes toward socio-spatial segregation in the use of Lima’s beaches in a sample of university undergraduate students. Right-wing authoritarianism (RWA) and social dominance orientation (SDO) were assessed. Intolerance to ambiguity was evaluated as a measure of cognitive rigidity. A path analysis proposes that SDO and intolerance of ambiguity exert a direct influence on support for discrimination against domestic labourers. Also, SDO and RWA exert a direct influence on positive attitudes toward socio-spatial segregation in the beaches. Finally, a positive correlation between discriminatory attitudes and a positive attitude toward socio-spatial segregation was observed. / En una muestra de estudiantes universitarios, se analiza la influencia de la ideología política conservadora sobre el apoyo al trato discriminatorio hacia las empleadas domésticas y sobre la actitud favorable hacia la segregación socioespacial en el uso de los balnearios de Lima. Se utilizaron medidas de autoritarismo de ala derecha (RWA) y de orientación hacia la dominancia social (SDO). La intolerancia a la ambigüedad se utilizó como indicador de rigidez cognitiva. Un diagrama de sendero propone que la SDO y la intolerancia a la ambigüedad ejercen influencia directa sobre el apoyo al trato discriminatorio hacia las empleadas domésticas. Asimismo, la SDO y el RWA ejercen influencia directa sobre el apoyo hacia la segregación socioespacial en el uso de los balnearios. Se observó, además, una asociación directa entre actitudes discriminatorias frente a las empleadas domésticas y una actitud favorable hacia la segregación socioespacial.
