Contaminant tracking through dendro-chemical analysis of tree-radii

The research used dendro-chemical analysis of ash tree rings and current year leaf litter to track Cd, Pb, Zn, Cu, Mn, Cr, and Sn spread and cycling from a closed garbage dump-toxic waste site. This technique allowed for determination of areal extent, contaminant levels and time period of initial contaminant contact. Only Zn, Sn, and Cu were found in elevated quantities in the xylem wood and Pb in the leaf litter. Elemental concentrations of Pb, Sn and Cd in xylem wood and leaves of ash were positively correlated. Tin was the only element to demonstrate a clear initial contact period and elemental accumulation with age. Significant levels of Cu accumulated in the heartwood while Zn revealed significant but inconsistent accumulated patterns. Expected attenuation zones associated with municipal solid waste landfill leachate dispersion were not found; thus the pathway for contaminant dispersion was likely through groundwater flow. / An elemental index was developed to facilitate the use of dendro-chemical analysis in periods of suppressed tree growth resulting from environmental pollution.

Measurements and modelling of fertilizer concentrations in subsurface drain flow from a potato field

A 4.87 hectare potato field at St. Leonard d'Aston, Quebec was instrumented to measure surface runoff and tile drain flow over the 2 year growing season period, 1989-1990. The soil type was a Ste. Jude sandy loam. Several soil and water parameters and NPK concentrations in runoff were measured. The CREAMS (Chemicals, Runoff and Erosion from Agricultural Management Systems) computer simulation model was validated for the study site. / Observed N concentrations in tile drain flow exceeded the Canadian water quality guideline of 10 mg/L. Observed P concentrations were less than 0.01 mg/L; and K concentrations, for the most part, exceeded 10 mg/L. / CREAMS overpredicted event surface runoff depths, and underpredicted event percolation depths. However, total monthly surface runoff and percolation depths closely matched observed values. / CREAMS overpredicted event nitrate concentrations in tile drain flow. There was a poor match between predicted and observed event nitrate concentrations in tile drain flow (coefficient of predictability, CP$ sb{ rm A}$ = 104.95). However, predicted total monthly nitrate load closely matched observed values (CP$ sb{ rm A}$ = 0.84). Total monthly and seasonal nitrate loads in tile drain flow were underpredicted.

Air quality monitoring with polar-orbiting hyperspectral infrared sounders : a fast retrieval scheme for carbon monoxide

D.Phil. (Geography) / The Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (lASI), operational in polar-orbit since 2006 on the European MetOp-A satellite, is the most advanced of its kind in space. It has been designed to provide soundings of the troposphere and lower stratosphere at nadir in a spectral interval of 0.25 em" across the range 645-2 760 em". Fine spectral sampling such as this is imperative in the sounding of trace gases. Since its launch, the routine retrievals of greenhouse, species from IASI measurements have made a valuable contribution to atmospheric chemistry studies at a global scale. The main contribution of this thesis is the development of a new trace gas retrieval scheme for IASI measurements. The goal was to improve on the global operational scheme in terms of the algorithm complexity, speed of calculation and spatial resolution achieved in the final solution. This schemedirectly retrieves column integrated trace gas densities at single field-of-view (FOV) from IASI measurements within a 10% accuracy limit. The scheme is built on the Bayesian framework of probability and based on the assumption that the inversion of total column values, as apposed to gas profiles, is a near-linear problem. Performance of the retrieval scheme is demonstrated on simulated noisy measurements for carbon monoxide (CO). Being a linear solution, the scheme is'highly dependent on the accuracy of the a priori. A statistical estimate of the a priori was computed using a principal component regression analysis with 50 eigenvectors. The corresponding root-mean-square (RMS) error of the a priori was calculated to be 9.3%. In general terms, the physical retrieval improved on the a priori, and sensitivity studies were performed to demonstrate the accuracy and stability of the retrieval scheme under a numberof perturbations. A full system characterization and error analysis is additionally preformed to elicidate the nature of this complex problem. The hyperspectral IASI measurements introduce a significant correlation error in the retrieval. The Absorption Line Cluster (ALC) channel selection method was developed in this thesis, to address the correlation error explicitly. When a first neighbour correlation factor of 0.71 is assumed in the measurement error covariance for the clusters of ALC channels, then most of the correlation error is removed in the retrieval. In conclusion, the total column trace gas retrieval scheme developed here is fast, simple, intuitive, transparent and robust. These characteristics together make it highly suitable for implementation in an operational environment intended for air quality monitoring on a regional scale.

Detection of Harmful Chemicals in the Air using Portable Membrane Inlet Mass Spectrometry

Portable mass spectrometry has become an important analytical tool for chemical detection and identification outside of a lab setting. Many variations and applications have been developed to benefit various fields of science. Membrane inlet mass spectrometry is used to allow certain analytes to pass into the mass spectrometer without breaking vacuum or letting in large particulate matter. These two important analytical tools have been applied to the detection of harmful chemicals in the air. Earth-based separations and reverse gas stack modelling are useful mathematical tools that can be used to locate the source of a chemical release by back calculation. Earth-based separations studies the way different molecules will diffuse and separate through the air. Reverse gas stack modelling refers to the concentration differences of a chemical in relation to its distance from its source. These four analytical techniques can be combined to quickly and accurately locate various harmful chemical releases. The same system can be used for many applications and has been tested to detect harmful chemicals within and air-handling system. The monitoring of air-handling systems can greatly reduce the threat of harm to the building occupants by detecting hazardous chemicals and shutting off the air flow to minimize human exposure.
