Exoticism of portable art and ornaments: a study of social networks around the Last Glacial Maximum.

Gravel-Miguel, Claudine 10 August 2011 (has links)
This research aims to test the hypothesis that portable art objects and ornaments were used to create and maintain social networks between groups of hunter-gatherers coping with climatic insecurity. This is tested through the materials used to produce such objects. The results of tests indicate that the movement of objects of portable art and ornaments did not correlate with climatic values such as precise temperature and variance of temperature, which goes against the assumptions of the main hypothesis mentioned above. However, the variation in the production of these objects correlates well with broad climatic changes and with demographic events. This suggests that portable art objects and ornaments might have been used to a certain extent to help facilitate the population movements that were themselves affected by climate change. / Graduate

Aspectos da indústria paranaense: 1930-1970 / Aspects of the paranaense industry: 1930-1970

Loeffler, Walli 29 April 2009 (has links)
This investigation deals with the industrialization process in Paraná, (XX century), particularly on Curitibas grand. The study begins in the 30s, when Brazil entered the period of substitutive industrialization. Then occurred a change from mercantile sources of accumulation to industrial ones. This was performed under the limits of backwarded capitalism. Substitutive industrialization brought with a generalized industrialization process, which in Paraná was based on small amounts of capital from small businessmen that slowly obtained the support of mercantile sources. This, substitutive industrialization moved through the 40s and 50s. In the years of (19)60 the substitutive industrialization came to an end. Then, the process of industrialization in Paraná was reallocated as a complementary function of the vigorous industrialization in São Paulo.

Chaos and confusion: British oversight of Russian repatriations in postwar southern Austria

Miskulin, Matthew 30 August 2017 (has links)
In 1945, as the Second World War ended, British troops serving under 5 Corps in southern Austria encountered a number of critical problems which hindered their ability to occupy the region and enact the policy of repatriation as set out in the Yalta Agreement. Fragile lines of supply and communication, and the need to feed and house diverse groups of hundreds of thousands of prisoners of war and refugees impeded British attempts to administer the area. Further complicating the situation was the infiltration of Yugoslav Partisans, supposed allies, fighting under Josip Broz Tito who claimed northern Italy and southern Austria as part of a “Greater Yugoslavia.” In preparation of an anticipated forceful ejection of these Partisans, the British military prioritized the fighting effectiveness of its troops over a consistent application of repatriation. The British military issued orders which interpreted Soviet citizenship, and therefore liability for repatriation, in very broad terms. This resulted in an inconsistent application of the policy, in which non-Soviets were either retained or handed over, with both courses of action seemingly in keeping with orders. While subsequent authors, most notably Nikolai Tolstoy and Christopher Booker, have written on this topic, none have yet recognized the connection between the chaotic circumstances in the region and the haphazard application of repatriation. By re-examining archival records of communications between military units involved, this thesis rectifies that lacuna and acknowledges for the first time the irregular and inconsistent nature of these repatriations. / Graduate / 2018-08-11
