_______________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / The evaluation of the grip strength, a fast, reliable and simple procedure of being executed, is capable to supply objective information on the function of the hand. The objective of the study is to verify if the elbow position influences the measurement of the grip strength. It is a transversal study, whose sample was composed for 200 female individuals with the average age of 20,36± 1,71. The grip strength evaluation was made with two different elbow positions, in 90 degree flexion as well as in full extension. The instrument used for the collection of data was the Jamar® dynamometer. The results have shown that there is not any significant difference between the averages of the gotten measures with the elbow in full extension and in 90 degree flexion position, in both right and left hands. The average value gotten of the grip strength of the right hand with the bent elbow (90º) was of 29,87 Kg/F and 29,77 Kg/F with the elbow full extended. For the left hand, we found the average of 27,31 Kg/F with bent elbow (90º) and 27,28 Kg/F with the extended elbow. We could still verify that the grip strength is stronger in the dominant hand of right-handed individuals, however, there is no significant difference between the dominant and non dominant hands in left-handed individuals. We could not observe any correlation between the grip strength and the age in individuals of similar ages. New studies are suggested on the individual performance of each muscle during the accomplishment of the grip strength, in order to clarify important aspects in the production of such force.
