Post-Weld-Shift Measurement and Compensation in Butterfly Laser Modules

We investigate the post-weld-shift(PWS) induced fiber alignment shift in butterfly laser packaging. For high-speed laser modules in lightwave communication systems, the butterfly laser modules are widely used. When laser welding is applied to assemble a butterfly package, it is usually necessary to have mechanical elements such as substrates, fiber ferrule, and clip of house materials to facilitate fiber handing and retention within the package. However, during the process, rapid solidification of the welded region and associated material shrinkage often cause a post-weld-shift between welded components. The PWS significantly affects the package yield. A novel measurement and compensation technique employing a high-magnification camera with image capturing system (HMCICS) to probe the post-weld-shift (PWS) induced fiber alignment shifts in high-performance butterfly-type laser module packages is studied. The results show that the direction and magnitude of the fiber alignment shifts induced by the PWS in laser-welded butterfly-type laser module packaging can be quantitatively determined and then compensated. The increased coupling efficiency after this PWS compensation was from 3% to 10%. This HMCICS technique has provided an important tool for quantitative measurement and compensation to the effect of the PWS on the fiber alignment shifts in laser module packages. Therefore, the reliable butterfly-type laser modules with a high yield and a high performance used in lightwave transmission systems can be developed.

Design of Network Interface Controller and A Post Amplifier for 16Mbps Infrared Transceiver Module

Abstract The thesis comprises two different IC design projects, which are briefly introduced as follows. The first part is the NIC (Network Interface Controller) design. The NIC implements all of the Media Access Control (MAC) layer functions for transmission and reception of packets in accordance with the IEEE 802.3 standard. The design is compatible with CSMA/CD type Local Area Network, i.e, 100/10 Mbps Ethernet. The second part is a post-amplifier for a 16Mbps infrared transceiver module. We presents a design of the post-amplifier to convert the pre-amplifier output into digital pulses such that the baseband digital codec can further translate the pulses into the format of IrDA protocols. The design of the amplifier is aimed at the VFIR (very fast infrared) which is supposed to provide a 16 Mbps data transmission rate. The circuit design is carried out by TSMC 0.35 um 1P4M CMOS technology. The simulations results of the design meet the required specification of IrDA VFIR.

An analysis of selected decision making variables and the effects they have on the post-secondary education plans of 16-21 year old youth from the United States

The primary purpose of this study was to determine the importance of postsecondary education in the future plans of 16-21 year old youth from the United States. A secondary purpose of the study was to determine if selected individuals in their lives influence the post-secondary education decisions made by 16-21 year old youth in the United States. In addition, selected outcome options were analyzed to determine the effect these options have on post-secondary education decisions made by 16-21 year old youth from the United States. The sample for the study consisted of 3,017 males and females between the ages of 16-21, collected by means of a telephone survey. The dependent variable for this study was the higher education plans of 16-21 year old youth; and the independent variables were age, gender, ethnicity, usual grades made in high school, strength of influence of selected outcome options, and influencers of the decisions made by the respondents. The study found that 16-21 year old youth in the United States have a strong desire to attend post-secondary education full-time rather than part-time. A majority of the respondents indicated that they prefer attending a 4-year college or university with the second choice being a 2-year junior or community college. The respondents indicated that they are influenced strongly by their parents, siblings, and close friends to make decisions; but there does not appear to be a strong influence by this group on the respondents to make decisions about post-secondary education. The outcome options that appear to have the most influence on this age group are: having a job that makes you happy, having a good paying job, earning money for college, having an attractive lifestyle, preparing for a career, having job security, making a positive difference in the community and learning a valuable trade or skill. These factors, however, don’t appear to have a strong influence on this group when making a decision to attend post-secondary education.
