Power line communication channel models for home area networks

Fang, Xinyu 29 August 2018 (has links)
Smart meters (SMs) are key components of the smart grid (SG) as they gather electrical usage data from residences and businesses.Home area networks (HANs) are used to provide two-way communications between SMs and devices within a building such as appliances. This can be implemented using power line communications (PLCs) on home wiring topologies. In this thesis, a HAN PLC channel model is designed based on a split-phase power system which includes branch circuits, a panel with circuit breakers and bars, a secondary transformer and the wiring of neighboring residences. A cell division (CD) method is employed to construct the channel model. Further, arc fault circuit interrupter (AFCI) and ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) circuit breaker models are developed. Several PLC channels are presented and compared with those obtained using existing models. PLC communication systems are affected by noise, thus a noise model is developed which is comprised of background and impulse noise. This noise model can be used to obtain the noise power spectral density (PSD) at receivers in the wiring topology. / Graduate

Prototype Of Coupling Unit Network For Power Line Communications

Srinivasan, Bharath 01 January 2006 (has links)
Power Line Communications has made impressive strides since its introduction. Power Line Communications (PLC) or Broadband over Power Lines (BPL) is the method of transmitting broadband signals over the power lines and making it available at the power outlet in homes. It provides last mile communication and makes use of existing power lines to transmit signals, thereby eliminating the need to lay cables all over again. PLC is fast becoming a commercial reality in the United States. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is working toward making PLC a standard with particular emphasis on power emission issues and interference with nearby bands. Power companies, vendors and ISPs (Internet Service Providers) have tied up to bring this new technology to market. The Power line environment is inherently unpredictable due to interference, low signaling impedance and the highly linear operating environment that PLC transmitters require. The coupling unit in the PLC system acts as a filter and eliminates the harmful AC signal from interfering with the broadband signals. A coupling unit amplifier topology that provides gain equalization and wideband mitigation to the effects of low-impedance loads on PLC in the high frequency range has been explored in detail in this study. The amplifier is verified for its performance by means of circuit simulation using industry-standard software such as Agilent's Advanced Design System (ADS). The coupling unit has also been fabricated to verify the performance. An experimental setup for verifying the performance of the coupling unit using a PLC transmitter and PLC receiver has also been proposed.

Currently, there is a great interest to develop power line communications (PLC) transceivers for broadband and narrowband data communications for smart grids and network access. However, for advancing PLC technologies, there is a great demand for introduction of couplers for connecting the PLC tranceivers to the electric energy circuits with minimum distortion. This contribution addresses the study, investigation, specification, design, and analysis of capacitive couplers for single input single output (SISO), broadband and narrowband PLC transceivers. Capacity and SISO PLC couplers covering the following frequencies bandwidth are addressed: from 9 kHz up to 2 MHz, from 1,7 MHz up to 100 MHz and from 1,7 MHz up to 150 MHz. The analysis performance of the designed and prototyped PLC couplers for operating in the aforementioned frequencies bandwidths, shows the inherent difficulties to guarantee that the design specifications are fulfilled when passive components are commercial ones and the frequency bandwidth increase. Additionally, the analysis confirms the need for taking into account advancing prototyping techniques for dealing with high-frequency signals. Finally, the measurements show that the discussed narrowband PLC couplers can be used in a PLC channel system.

This master thesis aims to discuss and analyze the use of spectrum sensing techniques applied to PLC systems, in order to explicit the spectrum occupation. These techniques extract and select the least quantity of the most representative signal features in order to project the best detector that presents the lowest computational complexity. In addition to that, the spectrum sensing problem is formalized, and a few investigation questions are analyzed for both synthetic and measured data. The measurement of PLC signals and their characterization is also exposed. Although the analysis of the attained results indicate that the techniques used are suitable for the examined problems, their further investigation is necessary, in order to better understand the PLC environment and the spectrum sensing issues related to it. This work is, therefore, an initial study about the mentioned matters.

COMMUNICATIONS OVER AIRCRAFT POWER LINES: A PRACTICAL IMPLEMENTATION

Tian, Hai, Trojak, Tom, Jones, Charles H. 10 1900 (has links)
ITC/USA 2006 Conference Proceedings / The Forty-Second Annual International Telemetering Conference and Technical Exhibition / October 23-26, 2006 / Town and Country Resort & Convention Center, San Diego, California / This paper presents a practical implementation of a hardware design for transmission of data over aircraft power lines. The intent of such hardware is to significantly reduce the wiring in the aircraft instrumentation system. The potential usages of this technology include pulse code modulation (PCM), Ethernet and other forms data communications. Details of the fieldprogrammable gate array (FPGA) and printed circuit board (PCB) designs of the digital and analog front end will be discussed. The power line is not designed for data transmission. It contains considerable noise, multipath effects, and time varying impedance. Spectral analysis data of an aircraft is presented to indicate the difficulty of the problem at hand. A robust modulation is required to overcome the harsh environment and to provide reliable transmission. Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) has been used in power line communication industry with a great deal of success. OFDM has been deemed the most appropriate technology for high-speed data transmission on aircraft power lines. Additionally, forward error correction (FEC) techniques are discussed.

[en] CHANNEL ESTIMATION OVER POWER LINE COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEMS / [pt] ESTIMAÇÃO DE CANAL EM SISTEMAS DE COMUNICAÇÃO SOBRE LINHAS DE POTÊNCIA

RENATA BRAZ FALCAO DA COSTA 25 March 2008 (has links)
[en] The powerline communications systems have been receiving increasing attention in last few years.
