The comparison of AC and DC alternatives for sub-transmission networksEngelbrecht, Frank 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MScEng)--University of Stellenbosch, 2001. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Recent advances in semiconductor technology extended the economic power range
for DC transmission to just a few MW. Network planners need tools to compare AC
and DC alternatives in order to find the best technical and economic solution for a
specific network. TESAT, a software analysis tool, is developed to determine the
optimum conductor and line technology for a network. Voltage regulation problems
are identified and can be solved with network devices which have the potential to
solve network problems more effectively and economically than ever before. PSAT,
another software analysis tool developed in previous research, is used to model
networks and support technologies. Hence, with the aid of TESAT and PSAT, line
and support technologies are combined in an attempt to find the most effective
solution in terms of cost and technical performance. This is demonstrated with the aid
of a case study.
Furthermore, interfaces between PSAT and the real world are developed. This
includes an extension to the input interface of PSAT that calculates the equivalent
impedances of a transmission line automatically, as well as an interface to share data
between ReticMaster and PSAT. A dispersed generation and support technology
database is also developed as an extension to the output interface ofPSAT.
In hierdie tesis is 'n
PSAT.

A multilevel inverter for DC reticulationMolepo, Seaga Abram 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MScEng)--Stellenbosch University, 2003. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This report presents the design and development of a multilevel inverter for DC reticulation.
Two main multilevel inverter topologies are introduced and discussed. The research
focusses on the flying capacitor multilevel topology, since it became evident that it is
more suitable for DC reticulation than the diode clamped multilevel topology.
A bootstrap power supply for the gate drive circuits of a multilevel inverter is developed
and its feasibility verified experimentally. A self-starting auxiliary power supply, that
aims at addressing the power supply problem of DC to AC and DC to DC converters, is
designed and its functionality demonstrated on a flying capacitor multilevel inverter. An
FPGA based digital controller for implementing the inverter's control algorithms is also
discussed. This controller incorporates a feed-forward output voltage regulation technique.
Experimental results obtained with the four-level flying capacitor multilevel inverter, using
the FPGA based digital controller and the self-starting auxiliary power supply, are
presented in this report.
Hierdie beheerder inkorporeer
'n vorentoe-voer uittree spannings regulasie tegniek.

This paper presents an analytical model to a three-phase transmission line with vertical symmetry plane. Because of physical characteristics of this line, it is possible to represent it by a system consisting of a single-phase and a two-phase line. In this system, the equations that describe the behavior of single-phase terminals quantities are known, while the two-phase equations were obtained using a transformation matrix written explicitly in terms of the parameters of three-phase line. Then, the modal quantities of three-phase line were converted into phase domain and the resulting equations represent an analytical model developed directly in phase domain of this line. To verify the performance of the model, were performed simulations considering the energization and impact of a lighting surge in a 440 kV three-phase line. These results were compared to results obtained with the line represented by a classical method (presentation modes) and simulations show that the model responds appropriately in the frequency range corresponding to the operation and switching procedures. The model developed takes into account the frequency effect on the longitudinal line parameters and also the fact that the line parameters are distributed along their length. It is believed that the matrix analysis, that support the model and the model validation in time domain may give rise in the future to a transmission line model developed directly in time domain. Such a model, because it is obtained directly from the propagation equations of line, will enable the more accurate results of simulations of electromagnetic transients that...
