Testament to Home: Using the Cultural Landscape Report for Conserving Historic House Grounds

McLaurin, Sylvia Rody 14 December 2018 (has links)
The cultural landscape report (CLR) is a document commissioned by historic sites for the purpose of confirming an historic landscape’s significance and integrity, assessing its defining characteristics, evaluating the condition of its features, and recommending present and future landscape treatments. In this study of six publicly owned historic home grounds in the Deep South, the contents and format of the respective CLR’s are reviewed and site directors interviewed to determine their use of the CLR for their sites. While CLR’s are valuable especially to support bids for funding and other appropriations, directors indicate needs not readily met by their respective CLR’s, such as cost and phasing of treatment plans; means of balancing visitor expectations, environmental sensitivity, and historical preservation; and treatment recommendations that realistically consider site resources.

Laboratory and Field Studies on Subterranean Termites Native to the Eastern United States

Little, Nathan Shook 01 May 2010 (has links)
This study investigates modifications to AWPA Standard E18-06 to develop an above-ground field test for subterranean termites native to the eastern United States. AWPA Standard E18-06 was modified in two stages to progressively increase optimum conditions for subterranean termite feeding. Modification II, which incorporated the use of house bricks and feeder strips with a solid ventilated cover, had an increase in termite attack with less variation between tests. This study also investigates the effects of adding antioxidants, both natural and synthetic, and analogues which lack antioxidant properties, to test wood blocks on feeding by Reticulitermes flavipes Kollar using AWPA Standard E1-09. Antioxidants had feeding deterrence and mortality properties to R. flavipes. Conversely, the non-antioxidant analogues, with the exception of the heterocyclic flavanone, had little effect on R. flavipes. It is concluded that R. flavipes instinctively avoids wood which contains high levels of antioxidants, such as heartwood with phenolic extractives.

A Finite Difference Model For Induced Hypothermia During Shock

Lyon, Dylan S 01 January 2021 (has links)
The modified Fiala model from Westin was implemented with conditions for circulatory shock and hypothermia. The purpose is to model Emergency Preservation and Resuscitation (EPR), a procedure for inducing hypothermia in patients. Cold tissue temperatures reduce metabolism exponentially, greatly extending the window of anaerobic metabolic activity before permanent deoxygenation damage. EPR in patients undergoing hypovolemic shock can preserve the patient until primary surgical care and blood transfusions are attainable., thereby increasing survival rates. The main applications of EPR are military in-situ stabilization for transit to clinical care and extending the survivability of patients requiring prolonged surgery before blood transfusion. The model explored in this paper seeks to model the tissue temperatures of the body while enduring circulatory shock and various options of cooling devices. Calibrating this model with already available data enables its use for getting preliminary results and design parameters for prototype cooling devices. The final objective of this research is to support the design of a cooling device that can induce sustained hypothermia in a field setting, while still being mobile enough for military and ambulance use.
