The Exchange Rate Pass-through Into Domestic Manufacturing Prices During Two Inflation Regimes

Shahbazian, Roujman January 2009 (has links)

In the beginning of 1990s Sweden implemented several measures in order to maintain price stability. These measures have resulted in an environment in which inflation is lower and more stable. The same development could be seen in other OECD countries. At the same time a decrease in exchange rate pass-through was noticed in many countries. This has led researchers to believe that there may be a connection, between these two phenomena. This dissertation analyzes whether there has been any change in exchange rate pass-through for manufacturing products in Sweden between the high inflation period (1977-1993) and the low inflation period (1994-2006). The result shows that there is a difference in the exchange rate pass-through between the two periods. During the low inflation period the degree of pass-through was lower than during the high inflation period.

The impact of changes in asset prices on real economic activity : a cointegration analysis for Germany

Nastansky, Andreas, Strohe, Hans Gerhard January 2010 (has links)
This paper reviews theoretical and empirical evidence of asset price movements impact on the real economic activity. A key channel is the wealth effect on consumption. Fluctuations in stock prices and housing prices influence the households wealth and could have important impacts on households consumption. In addition, stock prices may affect corporate sector investments and property prices may affect building activity. Here, the method of cointegration is used to estimate the wealth effect and the investment effect in aggregate time series for Germany after the Reunification in 1990. Moreover, we discuss the role of asset prices in the monetary policy strategy of the ECB.

Price Transmissions Between Food And Oil

Kaltalioglu, Muge 01 December 2010 (has links) (PDF)
The upward movement in oil and food prices in the 2000s has triggered interest in the information transmission mechanism between the two markets. This research investigates the volatility spillover between oil, food, and agricultural raw material price indexes for the period January 1980 to April 2008. The results of the Cheung-Ng procedure show that variation in oil prices does not Granger cause the variance in food and agricultural raw material prices. However, there is bi-directional spillover between agricultural raw material and oil markets. Besides, it examines volatility spillover between maize, wheat, soybean, rice, and oil spot prices for the period January-1998 to February-2009. The results show that volatility spillover in oil returns leads fluctuations in maize, soybean, wheat, and rice returns in 3 months. In addition, there are bi-directional spillovers between oil and soybean returns, rice and wheat returns. This topic is essential for countries whose populations grow rapidly because forecasting of commodity prices plays an important role in instituting the economic policy. Also, understanding the dynamics of the economy leads to better economic policies. Thus, results are important for investors and policy makers interested in price shocks and transmission.

Analysis of storing wind energy for periods of seconds to hours in ERCOT

Weber, Robert Arthur, 1983- 05 January 2011 (has links)
Wind energy has dramatically changed the energy portfolio of Texas and more specifically, a region covering 75% of the state designated as ERCOT (Electric Reliability Council of Texas). Hardly existent at all ten years ago, the amount of capacity the wind farms provide is over 9000MW and accounts for 10% of the total generation. Due to the intermittent nature of wind and limitations of transmission lines, short and long term storage of this energy would benefit wind farms and the grid as a whole. This paper studies the relationship between wind, storage and real time electricity prices by analyzing prices and simulating a wind farm with different wind storage strategies over the course of a year. Based on these simulations, it is found that an ideal storage medium with no losses could be in the money for $17.50/kW for long term storage and $1,998/kW for short term storage for prices similar to 2009-2010. / text
