Home Heating and Asthma in New Zealand

New Zealand has one of the highest asthma prevalence rates among developed countries and previous research attributes this partly to poor socioeconomic conditions and to insufficient home heating in particular. Retrospective empirical studies from overseas suggest that home heating is associated with asthma rates. However, the evidence to date is not conclusive. In this thesis, I present a theoretical framework and empirically investigate the link between home heating and asthma hospital admissions in New Zealand using panel data techniques and controlling for endogeneity. The hypothesis that higher electricity prices (via less adequate heating) increase asthma admissions is tested and receives strong empirical support across a number of model specifications and datasets used.

With drastic increases in electricity prices throughout 2021, the public’s en- gagement in the discourse about the cost of electricity has reached new heights. With this in mind, this project was set in motion to try to make sense of factors that affect electricity prices in Sweden and thus identify areas of interest that further research could focus on.The variables chosen to be investigated were: Temperature, Exchange rate be- tween SEK and EUR, Export of electricity, Import of electricity, Inflation, Price of coal, Price of natural gas, and Price of crude oil. The data was gathered from various sources and was used to create a linear regression model.Exchange rate between SEK and EUR, Export of electricity, Inflation, Price of coal and Price of natural gas were found to be significant predictors of elec- tricity prices in Sweden and the source of electricity, economic policy, and energy trade were the areas of interest for further research.

Conserving energy and reducing electricity consumption have become critical issues. Measuring when different appliances use electricity can be an effective way to save money on electricity bills. By providing information about hourly electricity prices and peak consumption times, people can subconsciously adopt energy saving habits to reduce the electricity consumption in their households. The challenge, however, lies in ensuring that all household members are informed and made aware of the right times to use electricity. This study will research how nudging can be utilized to reduce electricity consumption in households and what information the people in the households need to be able to make informed decisions to reduce their electricity consumption.

Internalizing the carbon externality : greenhouse gas mitigation’s financial impact on electric utilities and their customers

Social, political, and economic trends suggest that the United States may soon join other United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) countries in drafting substantive, national climate change policy. After providing a brief overview of past and present climate action taken both nationally and internationally, this paper explores different economic solutions to address the externalities of fossil fuel emissions. Alternatives include command-and-control regulation, a carbon tax, and a cap-and-trade program. Several factors, including domestic political anti-tax sentiment, suggest that a cap-and-trade framework is the most promising market-based alternative to reduce carbon emissions within the United States’s electricity sector. Case studies focus on the power generation components of four Texas utilities: Austin Energy, CPS Energy of San Antonio, NRG Energy, and Luminant and assess cap-and-trade’s ramifications on electricity prices. Utilities would seek to pass through to customers in the form of higher electricity prices up to 100 percent of expenses incurred from mitigating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Three primary factors will determine how a given carbon dioxide cap-and-trade allowance price will affect the electricity price charged by utilities: the carbon intensity of the generation fuel mix, whether the wholesale electricity market is regulated or competitive, and whether greenhouse gas allowances are auctioned or grandfathered to covered entities. Consumer elasticity would determine resulting demand for the higher priced energy. Relatively inelastic electricity consumption could cause electricity sector customers to incur financial losses approximately eight times larger than producers by the year 2020 under a mature cap-and-trade framework. Furthermore, evidence suggests market-based GHG reduction tools such as a cap-and-trade schema alone are not sufficient to decarbonize the electricity generation sector. Without complementary regulatory policies that mandate transition to clean energy sources, cap-and-trade will only succeed in redistributing the opportunity cost associated with the carbon externality. / text

Swedish industrial and energy supply measures in a European system perspective

A common electricity market in Europe will in all probability lead to a levelling out of the electricity price, which implies that Swedish consumers will face higher electricity prices with a European structure. This new market situation will force industry and energy suppliers to take new essential measures as actors in a deregulated European electricity market. In this thesis it is shown how over 30 Swedish small and medium-sized industries can reduce their use of electricity by about 50%. When scaling up the result to include all Swedish industry, the measures will lead to a significant reduction in global CO2 emissions, and a situation where Sweden will have a net export of electricity. Changing industrial energy use towards increased use of district heating will consequently affect the local energy suppliers. As a local energy supplier invests in CHP and co-operates on heat with an industry that has altered its energy use, the system cost will be halved. Considering higher European electricity prices, the benefits will be even higher with possibilities to reduce global emission with over 350%. In Sweden where district heating is very well established, heat driven absorption technology is especially favourable since it will lead to cost effective electricity production and increased utilization time for a CHP plant. Vapour compression chillers have been compared with heat driven absorption cooling for a local energy utility with a district cooling network and for industries in a Swedish municipality with CHP. The results show that the higher the share of absorption technology is, in comparison to compression chillers, the lower the production cost will be for producing cooling. This thesis illustrates measures for Swedish industry and energy suppliers in a fully deregulated European electricity market that will shift the energy systems in the direction of cost-effectiveness and resource effectiveness. The thesis also shows that the benefits of the measures will increase even more when accounting with electricity prices with a higher European structures. To methodically change the use of electricity would be an economical way to increase the competitiveness of Swedish plant in relation to other European plants. Taking advantage of these particularly Swedish conditions will contribute to the creation of lean resource systems, and as a result help the whole EU region to meet its commitment under the Kyoto Protocol. Altering industrial energy use towards less electricity and energy dependence will be a competitive alternative to new electricity production and help secure energy supply in the European Union.

Analysis of storing wind energy for periods of seconds to hours in ERCOT

Wind energy has dramatically changed the energy portfolio of Texas and more specifically, a region covering 75% of the state designated as ERCOT (Electric Reliability Council of Texas). Hardly existent at all ten years ago, the amount of capacity the wind farms provide is over 9000MW and accounts for 10% of the total generation. Due to the intermittent nature of wind and limitations of transmission lines, short and long term storage of this energy would benefit wind farms and the grid as a whole. This paper studies the relationship between wind, storage and real time electricity prices by analyzing prices and simulating a wind farm with different wind storage strategies over the course of a year. Based on these simulations, it is found that an ideal storage medium with no losses could be in the money for $17.50/kW for long term storage and $1,998/kW for short term storage for prices similar to 2009-2010. / text
