Evil done vulnerability assessment: examining terrorism targets through situational crime preventionUnknown Date (has links)
Following the events of September 11th, 2001, national attention has been
captivated by terrorism and terrorism prevention. Parallel to this time of increased focus
on terrorism prevention, adequate funding to support new departments or increased
terrorism prevention efforts in existing departments was unattainable. Consequently, a
strong need for prevention strategies that are affordable and highly applicable at the local
level has resulted. Thus, it is the purpose of this study to examine methods of risk
assessment and test the accuracy of such methodologies in order to assist local
organizations in effectively applying limited resources for opportunity reduction at
vulnerable locations based on calculated risks. The primary goal of this thesis is to test
the validity of the EVIL DONE vulnerability assessment and evaluate its ability to
predict the number of fatalities and injured persons resulting from a terrorist attack. / Includes bibliography. / Thesis (M.S.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2013.

The purpose of the study was to narrate how community police officer ́s describe their evidence-based crime prevention work in particularly-vulnerable-, risk-, and vulnerable areas. This has been accomplished from qualitative interviews with community police officer ́s stationed in the mentioned areas. A qualitative content analysis has been applied to study the data material. Furthermore, the material has been analyzed to describe whether and how community police officer ́s work can be connected to evidence-based crime prevention methods, community-oriented policing and problem-oriented policing. A cautious conclusion indicates that some parts of community-oriented policing as an approach can be linked to community police officers’ assignments. Based on the results, problem-oriented policing as an approach can to some extent be established. However, essential parts from community-oriented policing and problem-oriented policing are missing, hence, it indicates that the methods are not fully implemented.

The Filtering Out Of Hate Crime In The Criminal Justice System : A Qualitative Study Of Police Investigation In DenmarkAndersen, Rikke Hoelgaard January 2022 (has links)
Hate crime has emerged as a new ‘crime problem’ in Denmark, which has led to legislative adjustments and requirements of the police to improve identification, registration and handling of hate crime. International research shows that the investigation of hate crime is a complex issue not least because hate crime is legally not a crime category but an aggravating circumstance in principle to any crime. There exist no studies of hate crime policing in Denmark, and this study aims to fill a knowledge gap by a qualitative exploration of the processing of hate crime in the criminal justice system in a Danish context and from the perspective of the police, which is a relatively overlooked perspective. Specifically, the study explores why many hate crimes are filtered out through the criminal justice system, and through a thematic analysis the study identifies a number of challenges on a legal, organizational and practise level, that all contributes to a filtering out of hate crime throughout the Danish criminal justice system. Goldstein’s theory of problem-oriented policing is used as framework to discuss the implications of law in hate crime policing. The Danish police is expected to deal more effectively with the hate crime problem, and more knowledge on what works in hate crime policing is needed. Keywords: Hate crime, investigation, criminal justice processing, problem-oriented policing, thematic analysis.

A preventative policing style for public violence in the towns of Harrismith and Warden in the eastern Free StatePearce, Brenda 30 June 2008 (has links)
This exploratory and qualitative investigation is used as a research strategy to indicate a preventative policing style for public violence in the Eastern Free State. The research's integration of problem-solving methods may be used in instances where public violence is common and pre-empted.
The study researched the policing of public expression against poor service delivery in a democratic South Africa after the adoption of a new Constitution. The Scanning, Analysis, Response and Assessment Model is applied by way of a service-oriented, preventative policing style involving the principles of the Community Policing Style.
The dissertation argues that though the South African Police Service's handling of public violence in the Eastern Free State, was reminiscent of the former public violence of political oppression, it should gradually move away from the military approach to a preferred community policing style and include relevant role players in using a systematic and service-orientated preventative policing style to address public violence. / CRIMINOLOGY / MTECH: POLICING
