Advisor Perspectives on the Relationship between Professional Values and the Practice of Academic Advising

Professional academic advisors play an important role in higher education—especially at large, research institutions where their use is more prevalent. This study explored professional advisor perspectives about the impact of the NACADA Statement of Core Values (SCV) on the practice of academic advising. This study explores advisor perceptions about the impact of the SCV on advising practice. An in-depth, qualitative interview conducted via e-mail was used to discover advisor perceptions about the SCV in relation to advising practice. The interviews addressed advisor perceptions about the impact of the SCV in regard to (a) academic advising in general, (b) their own day-to-day practice of advising, and (c) specific functions commonly associated with academic advising. Ten professional academic advisors at a large research institution within the Florida State University System took part. The results demonstrate that the NACADA Statement of Core Values (SCV) is important to advising practice—especially those values relating to the fundamental relationship between advisors and the students they serve. The participating academic advisors expressed strong support for the SCV overall while also indicating limited prior knowledge or training. Several themes were apparent in the interview responses, including: the provision of accurate information, the students’ responsibility in the advising interaction, the importance of lifelong learning, and advising as a form of teaching.

The Value of Values-Based Literature: An Exploration of Librarianship's Professional Discussion of Core Values

In an attempt to describe the nature of recent journal literature revolving around the eleven core values of librarianship, as articulated by the American Library Association, this exploratory study analyzed 114 articles from four peer-reviewed library publications over the past five years (2002-2006): College & Research Libraries, Library Trends, Library Quarterly, and portal: Libraries and the Academy. This content analysis noted the levels of complexity with which the core values were discussed, the frequencies of the eleven core values (access, confidentiality/privacy, democracy, diversity, education and lifelong learning, intellectual freedom, preservation, public good, professionalism, service, and social responsibility), and the types of library environments found in the journal literature. The results are intended as a catalyst for the library profession to examine the way it discusses core values and uses them to guide and inform professional practice.

Juggling a way of being: A grounded theory of how one group of nurses navigates tension among personal and professional values 'in the moment'

Despite nursing’s espoused professional values of caring and social justice, some patients are stigmatized and receive discriminatory nursing care. There is a gap in existing literature about how nurses deal with the tension they experience when personal and professional values collide. The purpose of this study was to generate a substantive theory of the process that nurses use when faced with values tension in clinical practice and how this affects their behaviour. Using constructivist grounded theory methodology informed by symbolic interactionism and critical social theory, the theory of Juggling a Way of Being was co-constructed with data obtained through interviews with registered nurses (n=8) who provide frontline care in an emergency department in Atlantic Canada. The study’s findings revealed a process fraught with tension as nurse participants assimilated internal and external stressors, adjusted the patient-centered/nurse-centered lens according to their interpretation of the situation, and achieved a point of action or inaction. Implications for nursing practice and administration, education and research are discussed.

Teaching Professionalism in Nursing: A Quantitative Survey of Beginning Student Nurse Perceptions of Professional Values Interpreted Within a Leadership Context

The researcher designed this quantitative dissertation research to explore the perceptions of beginning nursing students toward professionalism in nursing, specific to professional values within the context of curriculum delivery for a leadership and management course in one baccalaureate nursing program. In addition, the researcher reviewed the literature for defining characteristics of professionalism in nursing. Adult students admitted to nursing programs today create multi-generational cohorts with prior learning from experiences and academic degrees in other disciplines. Often, content on professionalism in nursing is integrated in a nursing curriculum. However, students in a leadership and management course were unable to state the meaning of professionalism in nursing shortly before graduation. This study focused on professional values based on the nursing code of ethics as one attribute of the complex concept of professionalism. This exploratory study analyzed responses of students prior to beginning nursing courses to the Nurses Professional Values Scale-Revised (NPVS-R) survey. Findings indicated that beginning student perceptions of professionalism in nursing specific to professional values were generally in alignment with nursing standards. Significant findings suggested a lack of alignment to professional standards under the themes of trust, activism, caring and professionalism through autonomous practice, self-regulation, and participation professional activities positively associated to five variables. Recommendations are made for enhancing curriculum design of leadership and management in nursing content to address these areas.

Disertacijoje nagrinėjamas žurnalistų suvoktų ir rutininėje darbo praktikoje taikomų profesinių vertybių santykis su jų vykdoma informacijos ieškos, apdorojimo ir skelbimo veikla, šių plotmių neatitikimas, dėl ko tampa galimas manipuliacijos naudojimas ir žurnalistų dalyvavimas manipuliaciniuose scenarijuose. Darbe teoriškai pagrįstas žurnalistų profesinių vertybių tyrimas ir aptarti nacionalinės žiniasklaidos instituto galios kultūrinis ir ekonominis kontekstai. Atlikus empirinį tyrimą nustatyti vienpusio, abipusio ir mišraus poveikio komunikaciniai santykiai, išanalizuota sąveikos partnerių padėtis. Empirinio tyrimo duomenys leido nustatyti galimus žurnalistų manipuliacinio mentaliteto tipus. Atitinkamai buvo konstatuotas manipuliacijos vertinimo ir naudojimo santykis, fiksuotas komercinio intereso paskatintas manipuliacijos naudojimo ir žurnalistų atlyginimo dydžio ryšys, išnagrinėta manipuliacijos naudojimo dažnumo ir tokio elgesio sąmoningumo sąsaja, išanalizuotas manipuliacijos naudojimo dažnumo ir žurnalistų profesinėms vertybėms priešingo elgesio aktyvumo santykis. The problem investigated in the dissertation is the relationship between journalists’ understanding and practice of the professional values in their daily routines and the expansion of news management scenarios into the news production stages. Work presents theoretical framework for the analysis of the professional values as well as the analyses of the power of national media in cultural and economic contexts. Empirical research let to confirm the types of communicative relationships: that of the one-way effect, the mutual effect, and that of the hybrid effect and showed the dynamic position of the journalists during the social interactions of their professional activities. Types of possible manipulative mentality were distinguished in the work. A link between the evaluation of the manipulation and its use was found. The research also showed the relation between the use of the manipulation originated from the materialistic interest and the size of the journalists’ salaries. Social Work Values : Empowerment, organizational values & professional doxa inside the social work field

This study explores the field of social work values in the social work profession. The aim of the study is to explore how social work values are related to empowerment practices and organizational structures inside the social work field. By using the perspective of empowerment and professional doxa these structures inside the social work field are explored in interviews with nine social workers. These nine interviews show how social workers relate to values insides their profession, how empowerment practices are done, and what kind of organizational conflicts social workers may experience. By using the perspectives of empowerment and professional doxa the interviews been analysed and connected to both local and global concerns for the social work field. Many professional conflicts were found by taking these perspectives that are discussed in this study, as for example role conflicts social workers could experience. Other conflicts were those of structural failures that caused harm to client contacts and economic factors that were deemed more important for organizations than good client outcomes.

Professional Nursing Value Development in Nursing Students Who Participate in International Service Learning

Background: International Service Learning (ISL) is becoming widely used in nursing education as a means to provide global learning opportunities. Concrete outcomes for these experiences have not been clearly supported in previous research. Determining if ISL experience facilitate the development of Professional Nursing Values (PNV) can support the use of ISL as a viable pedagogy. Purpose: The purpose of the study was to determine if there were a difference in PNV development in students who participate in ISL as part of their clinical experiences compared to those who do not. The hypothesis was that there was a difference in the two groups. Theoretical framework: The study utilized Kolb’s experiential learning theory, which has a focus on the experiences of students as an impetus for learning. Methods: The research was a quasi-experimental study with a pretest, posttest design. Consecutive sampling was utilized for the experimental group and stratified random sampling for the control group. Results: Pretest analysis did not demonstrate any significant difference in the two groups at baseline. Post-test analysis indicated that while the mean PNV of the ISL group was higher, the results were not statistically significant. However, the difference in the pretest and posttest scores across all participants was statistically significant. Conclusions: While the findings were not significant in determining a difference between the two groups, the findings indicated that experiential learning in itself does support the development of PNV. Further research using a larger sample size may support the difference in these two groups and support the use of ISL as a viable pedagogy.

Percepções de estudantes e professores de terapia ocupacional sobre os atributos que caracterizam um bom modelo profissional / Perceptions of occupational therapy students and clinical tutors on the attributes of a good role model

Os estudantes desenvolvem suas atividades em diferentes ambientes educacionais, internalizando modelos de atuação profissional e espelhando-se nas experiências profissionais de seus professores e profissionais não docentes. Este estudo teve como objetivos identificar a percepção de estudantes de Terapia Ocupacional sobre os atributos mais importantes em bons modelos de profissional e identificar a percepção de terapeutas ocupacionais docentes e não docentes apontados pelos estudantes como bons modelos sobre os atributos que consideram como representativos desta sua característica. Foram abordados 116 estudantes da FMRP-USP e 102 da UFSCar, através de questionário estruturado e grupos focais; 12 profissionais docentes e não docentes da FMRP-USP e 10 da UFSCar, através de entrevista individual semi-estruturada. Os dados foram analisados quantitativamente (por meio de estatística descritiva) e qualitativamente (através de análise de conteúdo). Os estudantes identificaram como atributos importantes de um bom modelo de profissional: ter um bom relacionamento com o aluno, com o paciente e com a equipe de trabalho; demonstrar empatia; possuir didática; ser organizado e demonstrar comprometimento com o seu crescimento pessoal e profissional. Os profissionais docentes e não docentes referiram que foram indicados como bons modelos por demonstrarem empatia; apresentarem bom relacionamento interpessoal (com o estudante e com o paciente) e mostrar relação teórico-prática. Pode-se concluir que os atributos de um bom modelo para estudantes, não diferem da percepção de docentes/profissionais sobre suas próprias habilidades positivas. Os dados obtidos neste estudo sobre os atributos de um bom modelo na formação do terapeuta ocupacional poderão ser aplicados em programas nacionais de capacitação e desenvolvimento docente. / Students develop their activities in different educational environments, internalizing models of professional performance and mirroring themselves in the professional experiences of their teachers and non-teaching professionals. The objective of this study was to identify the perception of Occupational Therapy students about the most important attributes in good role models and to identify the perception of occupational and non-teaching occupational therapists pointed out by the students as good models about the attributes they consider as representative of their characteristic . A total of 116 students from FMRP-USP and 102 from UFSCar were approached through a structured questionnaire and focus groups; 12 teaching and non-teaching professionals from FMRP-USP and 10 from UFSCar, through a semistructured individual interview. Data were analyzed quantitatively (through descriptive statistics) and qualitatively (through content analysis). The students identified as important attributes of a good role model: having a good relationship with the student, the patient and the work team; demonstrate empathy; possess didactics; be organized and demonstrate commitment to your personal and professional growth. Clinical tutors believed that they were nominated as good role models because they demonstrated empathy; a good relationship with student and patient and were able to link theory to professional practice. It can be concluded that the perceptions of occupational therapy students and clinical tutors about role models attributes were similar. Identification of good role model characteristics may inform teacher training and faculty development in occupational therapy.

The Significance of Staff Decision Making and Awareness in Acquired Brain Injury Outreach Contexts

Staff who work in front line, direct contact support positions with community based clients with acquired brain injuries (ABI) hold unique responsibilities, and face unique challenges in their work due to the combination of three key factors: autonomous work environments, socially sanctioned power status over clients, and the decision making deficits of clients with ABI. These factors further contribute challenges to staff in the presently complex and ambiguous outreach context, where the embedded ideologies of the medical model of treatment remain in tension with the purported ideologies of the social model of disability and client self determination that drive outreach services. Using constructivist grounded theory methods and narrative and interpretive analysis strategies, this research interviewed fifteen (15) ABI outreach support workers to explore and examine their perceptions of the outreach context, how they negotiate decision spaces, and how they deal with the central ethical dilemma of outreach - achieving balance between their duty of care and the client's dignity of risk. The thesis documents decision making strategies used by the interview participants, examines the factors that influence their decision space when in the field with clients, and explores the role staff awareness of professional and personal values plays in making decisions in the best of interest of the client. Staff awareness is shown to be a critical, yet oft neglected factor in consideration of staff ethical decision making in ABI outreach.
