An educational law perspective on educator professionalism / Tladi Petros TaunyaneTaunyane, Tladi Petros January 2006 (has links)
This research study deals mainly with the educator professionalisation in the post democratic
South Africa, paying attention to the role of a professional council in promoting
educator professionalism. The status and image of teaching in this country seem to have
been viewed From the racial and cultural differences of communities previously. The
democratic dispensation brought an end to this unfair racial and cultural discrimination in
the education system through the establishment of a non-racial professional council for
educators (i.e. SACE).
The research aims are to determine:
- The characteristics of a professions and those needed for educator professionalism;
and - the role of the a professional council in promoting educator professionalisation.
In order to attain the above-mentioned research aims, a literature review and an empirical
investigation were undertaken.
The literature study was used to clarify concepts such as occupation, semi-profession,
profession, professionalisation and professional status. Secondly, characteristics or common
features associated with traditional models of professions (ie. accounting, law and
medicine) were discussed from a theoretical point of view. Lastly, the literature study
highlighted the establishment of professional councils for educators in other parts of the
world, including South Africa.
The different forms of legislation and policy documents applicable in education were
discussed. In order to determine the extent to which teaching adheres to or fulfils the
characteristics associated with a profession, teaching was tested against these
characteristics. The history of the establishment of SACE was briefly discussed and the
objectives or role of this organisation in educator professionalisation concluded this chapter.
The empirical research was conducted by using the questionnaire as a measuring instrument.
The advantages and disadvantages of the questionnaire as measuring instrument were
highlighted. The target population comprises of 239 educators from a total population of 2070 educators in Lejweleputswa and Northern Free State Education Districts -Free State
Province. The data collected in the investigation was processed through the SAS computer package to establish frequencies and percentages of responses mean scores ranking, t-test procedures and the effect sizes. The results were then presented tables, analysed and interpreted in accordance with the literature study.
The literature study revealed that like all other occupations, teaching aspires to attain
recognition and status as a profession. It was also revealed that teaching partially satisfy
characteristics associated with professions. The empirical study revealed that the
employment of un- or under qualified educators is still prevalent in South African schools.
In the last chapter, Chapter 5, conclusions from the literature review and empirical
investigation were drawn. The recommendations with regard to the role of SACE in
educator professionalisation were provided. Finally based on the research, future research

A framework for the management of professional bodies in South AfricaRajcoomar, Amendra 06 1900 (has links)
Professional bodies represent practitioners who continually seek guidance on industry related problems and challenges. Each professional body adopts values that are aligned to their own field of expertise. The operations of professional bodies are generally similar in many aspects and demands proficiency in order to maintain credibility and relevance. Research has revealed that professional bodies are lacking in effectiveness and need to improve so that maximum benefit can be relished by practitioners. This research attempts to develop a framework that can be utilised as a guide by professional bodies so that they can achieve excellence.
The aim of the study was to develop a framework that can be used for the management of professional bodies by exploring the views and opinions of a total of 748 participants from management and members of professional bodies locally. The data was collected from interviews, and two separate questionnaires, one for professional bodies and the other for practitioners. The data was analysed statistically primarily using factor analysis to determine the significant factors that contributed to the developed framework for professional bodies.
The questionnaires espoused questions related to the demographics of the respondents, management, mandate of professional bodies, offerings and benefits, assurance mechanisms, role of members, needs of members and more. The research instrument used the seven point Likert scale for the respondents to rate each question. The questionnaires were posted online for the respondents to participate.
The research significant factors for professional bodies and practitioners emanated separately through factor analysis. The factors were then combined resulting in a total of 14 research overall factors that were used to develop a framework for professional bodies.
The beneficiaries of this study are primarily professional bodies. The framework will also be useful to management in industry since it addresses partnership and collaboration efforts between industry, professional bodies and training authorities. / Business Management / DBL

Ondersoek na die volhoubaarheid van jeugwerk as professie in die Nederduitse Gereformeerde KerkSwartz, Liezl 30 November 2003 (has links)
An applied study was undertaken to describe the current position of youth work as profession in the Dutch Reformed Church and to identify factors influencing the sustainability. A review of relevant literature, as well as an empirical survey were conducted to investigate pertinent factors such as the working conditions, the person and the training of the youth worker.
In the empirical research respondents completing questionnaires consisted of former students of the Huguenot College currently employed as church youth workers, and those who left the ministry. Interviews were conducted with congregations currently employing or having employed youth workers. It is evident from this study that the youth work profession is not yet satisfactorily established and thus contributes to youth workers leaving the ministry.
In the interest of youth ministry, it is essential for the Dutch Reformed Church to acknowledge these factors influencing the sustainability of youth work as profession, in order to get this occupation properly established. / Practical Theology / M.Diac. (Jeugwerk-rigting)
