An Enquiry Concerning Adam Smith¡¦s Moral Philosophy

Wu, Jheng-yu 16 February 2012 (has links)
The crucial purposes of this thesis have two folds. Firstly, I will reconstruct Adam Smith¡¦s (5 June 1723-17 July 1790) thought through re-conceptualising the doctrine of the human nature in his theory. In doing this, I will give you reasons that the so-called ¡¥Das Adam Smith Problem¡¦ is founding on the wrong problematic concern in interpreting Smith¡¦s doctrine. The bulk of ¡¥the problem¡¦, having raised from the incessant controversy about whether Smith¡¦s theory is a coherent system built upon either sympathetic-based or interested-based foundation, but, as my kernel problematic concern in this thesis, I will argue that, neither side alone captures comprehensively about Smith¡¦s own understanding of human nature. Through presenting Smith¡¦s conception of the development of our moral judgement and his construction of operational principal of our market bahaviour, his doctrine of man should be orientated towards our intellectual capacity, especially on how do human cultivate their own moral judgement and the proper way of mutual understanding in everyday life. To accentuate the development of our capacity of judgement or reflection is the way I argue to understand Smith¡¦s conception of man correctly. Secondly, another controversy about Smith¡¦s doctrine lies on the contradiction among the concepts of ¡¥propriety¡¦ and ¡¥virtue¡¦ in his moral philosophy, while the former is the general standard attainable by the majority, and the latter with the stricter normative standard only a few men can achieve. My argument is, if man¡¦s intellectual capacity, such as judgement and reflection, having been regarded as essential concepts that Smith used to supersede the deficiency of one-sided understanding of human, then, his conception of impartial spectator and spectatorship¡¦s approach also gives the priority to cultivate our moral judgement and our capacity of reflection. Smith¡¦s primary concern, if I conceive it rightly, is to inspire our moral potential through disclosing the general principle lies behind our moral learning which terminated in the judgement made by impartial spectator, further, the concept of impartial spectator is also a linkage of different normative standards prescribed by propriety or virtue. Finally, In the conclusion part, I will connect my argument about moral potential with Smith¡¦s conception of human nature which tries to prove that, as the practical moralist, who considered man as intellectual animals that who deserves this privileged claim when who urges himself in enlarging and improving his own mentality.

Reflection on Cross-cultural learning experience - A case study of Global MBA of National Sun Yat-Sen University

Hsu, Ti-wei 03 August 2009 (has links)
In the past, most studies of the multi-national team were focused on the differences of culture, or adopted the concept of Western theory to explain the organizational behavior of Chinese community. Research methods also are based on logical positivism, not showing the process of conflicting, bearing, and adjusting different cultures. In this study, there are several attempts, such as the standpoint of research and research method. In regard to standpoint of research, I adopt the perspective of Chinese to observe organization conflict and cultural differences within a multi-national team (CAT Problem); in regard to research method, I used Narrative Inquiry to explore and describe the progress and story of multi-national team and tried to analyze the Chinese members¡¦ silent response in the operational process of multi-national team, which can be interpreted as the following four meanings: (a) focusing on the harmonious relationship between the groups, and (b) showing the bearing, and (C) adhering to the formality, and(d) looking forward to equal payback. This study found that each member of the multi-national team has to understand and grasp his/ her deep cultural context which influences his/ her words and deeds. And then team members can base on understanding cultural differences in the interaction of the team to find out the consensus and the way of thinking of the multi-national team. In addition, this study also recommends the leader should assist the Chinese team member of multinational team to redefine the cognitive of the harmonious relationship. It will help Chinese team member to improve the performance in a multi-national team.

Silvicultural, botanical and technological characterization of the eucalyptus urophylla s. t. blake and its potential use in sawmill.

Scanavaca Junior, Laerte 30 January 2002 (has links)
The eucalypts is a gender that should be more used at sawmills in Brazil, due to its fast growth, great wooden abundance, easiness and low cost in the exploration, wood relatively homogeneous, proximity to the consumer market and cheap price. The Eucalyptus urophylla is a species of high potential for the humid tropical zones, because of its tolerance to the eucalypts canker (Cryphonectria cubensis) and due to its great plasticity of adaptation for the most diverse uses. It is one of the most planted species in Brazil, with great potential to be used in sawmill. The objective of this work is to study the botanical and silvicultural features, and the physical and mechanical properties of the wood of provenances/progenies of Eucalyptus urophylla from the Flores island with 19 years of age. Six trees of 20 progenies had been selected, totaling 120 trees. There was not statistical differences among the origins or progenies for the productivity (DBH, height and cylindrical volume of the trees). It had statistic difference between progenies for the morphological features, like the leaves and the fruits, but the amplitude of variation presented was inside the limits defined for the species. About the study of the physical and mechanical properties, there was no statistic differences among the progenies, except for the volumetric shrinkage. The progenies were classified like the high mechanical resistance, except for the compression, that was of average resistance, high shrinkage and moderately weighed. There was good correlation between the basic density, that is easy to determination, and the mechanical properties of the wood, what allow to conclude that it is possible to predict the resistance to static flexion through the basic density. There was no correlation between end splitting log with end splitting board. There also were no correlations between the growth tensions and the diameter of the logs. The taper didn't influence the income in sawed wood. The medium income in sawed wood was of 42,5%.

Species of bees (Hymenoptera, apoidea) and caracterization of the honeys produced by them in the "cerrado" area of the municipality of Pirassununga, state of São Paulo, Brazil.

Almeida, Daniela de 05 November 2002 (has links)
Através das análises polínicas verificou-se que as abelhas também visitaram áreas vizinhas aos locais onde se encontravam as colméias, utilizando-se principalmente de Eucalyptus sp. e Citrus sp. / This research deals with the community of bees from the "cerrado" area of the Campus of the University of São Paulo, in Pirassununga, State of São Paulo, Brazil. The bees occurring on flowering plants were fortnightly sampled from July 2000 to July 2002. The honeys produced by the most frequent bee species were characterized as well. The 511 collected specimens were composed by 51 species and 31 genera of 4 families of the Apoidea. The bee community of the "cerrado" followed the same general pattern of the neotropical communities, presenting many species with few individuals and few species with many individuals. The family Apidae ("sensu latu") was the most abundant one with the highest number of species. One observed long flowering period plants together with short flowering ones, thus providing nutritional resources for the bees the year round. Visiting bees were collected in 52.86% of the 140 flowering plant species, most of them (18.92%) from the family Asteraceae. However Didimopanax vinosum (Araliaceae) was the plant species presenting the highest number of visiting bees. Concerning the species of meliponids studied the honey production was low due to the restricted number of colonies found in the area. As to Apis mellifera the honey production was higher from August to November, but it was impossible to collect samples from December to February. The mean of the physicochemical parameters used to analyse the honey samples from the two "cerrado" areas do fit with the standard rules. Through pollen analyses one observed that the bees have visited mainly plants of Eucalyptus sp. and Citrus sp. in the neighboring areas to their hives.

Bayesian Nonparametric Models for Multi-Stage Sample Surveys

Yin, Jiani 27 April 2016 (has links)
It is a standard practice in small area estimation (SAE) to use a model-based approach to borrow information from neighboring areas or from areas with similar characteristics. However, survey data tend to have gaps, ties and outliers, and parametric models may be problematic because statistical inference is sensitive to parametric assumptions. We propose nonparametric hierarchical Bayesian models for multi-stage finite population sampling to robustify the inference and allow for heterogeneity, outliers, skewness, etc. Bayesian predictive inference for SAE is studied by embedding a parametric model in a nonparametric model. The Dirichlet process (DP) has attractive properties such as clustering that permits borrowing information. We exemplify by considering in detail two-stage and three-stage hierarchical Bayesian models with DPs at various stages. The computational difficulties of the predictive inference when the population size is much larger than the sample size can be overcome by the stick-breaking algorithm and approximate methods. Moreover, the model comparison is conducted by computing log pseudo marginal likelihood and Bayes factors. We illustrate the methodology using body mass index (BMI) data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and simulated data. We conclude that a nonparametric model should be used unless there is a strong belief in the specific parametric form of a model.

Bayesian multivariate spatial models and their applications

Song, Joon Jin 15 November 2004 (has links)
Univariate hierarchical Bayes models are being vigorously researched for use in disease mapping, engineering, geology, and ecology. This dissertation shows how the models can also be used to build modelbased risk maps for areabased roadway traffic crashes. Countylevel vehicle crash records and roadway data from Texas are used to illustrate the method. A potential extension that uses univariate hierarchical models to develop networkbased risk maps is also discussed. Several Bayesian multivariate spatial models for estimating the traffic crash rates from different types of crashes simultaneously are then developed. The specific class of spatial models considered is conditional autoregressive (CAR) model. The univariate CAR model is generalized for several multivariate cases. A general theorem for each case is provided to ensure that the posterior distribution is proper under improper and flat prior. The performance of various multivariate spatial models is compared using a Bayesian information criterion. The Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) computational techniques are used for the model parameter estimation and statistical inference. These models are illustrated and compared again with the Texas crash data. There are many directions in which this study can be extended. This dissertation concludes with a short summary of this research and recommends several promising extensions.

Barbosa, Emerson Schneider January 2004 (has links)
This paperwork talks about rural proprieties cost, having as its main objective the proposition of systematization to evaluate and control cost in rural proprieties, as well as measure the cost of products resulting from of production processes in cattle breeding. In order to make this, literature about the changes which happened in the last years of the primary sector of the brazilian economy, as well as management systems in rural proprieties were revised. A Literature review about the principles of cost (total, partial, variable) and cost methodologies (standard cost, central cost, and Activing-based costing) was also performed. The systematization proposed was structured is six steps, as follows: (1) contextual internal and external analysis of the company; (2) identification of the conceptual basis; (3) cost system structure; (4) cost system used chosen; (5) practical implementation of the cost system and cost progress analysis; (6) results evaluation and identification of opportunities for improviment. Applying this practical model in a western region rural propriety of the State of Rio Grande do Sul it was possible to come to the conclusion that the systematization reached the objectives mentioned before, and that applying of the ABC methodology would be a refined complement to the cost system of the company.

In order to carry on this qualitative, biographic and documentary research, the task was based on an immanent analysis of the aforementioned document by the use of the dialectic-critical-reflexive method. The study was aimed at evaluating the issue of private propriety as a condition to negated labor in so far as it investigates Marx’s critical appraisal not only of Political Economy but also of Hegel’s dialectics. In this way the research tries to show that Marx’s reflection in the 1844 manuscripts allows for that double perspective of labor as a negation/deformation of man within estranged labor (activity of subsistence and immediate satisfaction as a factor of man’s dehumanization). Therefore, labor does not represent an activity by means of which man educate and form himself materially and spiritually, but as an instrument that alienates him from his production, his activity, even from himself. On the other hand, one sees the positive concept of labor as an affirmative activity that validates life and the individual within a social framework. Marx propounds that man asserts himself in his job as far as it objectifies his essential strength that is a previously established output engendered by an anticipating awakening of his critical will and in this fashion releases its generic/universal appeal. One concludes then that for Marx, labor is essentially a creative activity (forming) for man, while in the capitalist society which is based on private propriety of the means of production, labor is changed into a tool for negation of man and denial of human formation.
