KRUCHŇOVÁ, Lucie January 2017 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to elaborate the inventory of Jewish possessions in the town district of Sedlcany which would provide an answer to the economic and social status of this persecuted minority. The primary sources are the record-keeping cards from the Jewish card files, the registration of the Jewish landed estate in the town district of Sedlcany, the police entries, as well as, the population census from 1930. The acquired information about the Jewish possessions relates to the year 1940 too, therefore, this thesis is also focused on the period of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia. The first chapter briefly engages the reader with the history of the Jews in Bohemia with a specific focus of the town district of Sedlcany. The key part of this work is the detailed outline of the encoroachment on the economic life of the Jews not only in the Third Reich, but also on which ?the Aryan race? received their possessions. The key part of this thesis is a list of the Jewish population living in the town district of Sedlcany and nearby villages before deportations, an overview of family ties, and also an overview of movable and inmovable assets of individuals. Another essential charter of this work is the restituion of thirteen survivers that emphasises the response of the country and individuals to the return of the Jews after the Second World Ward and the progress of the administrative process. At last, this thesis offers charts, tables, maps with highlighted municipalities where the Jews had lived, and also three maps illustrating the Jewish settlement in the town district of Sedlcany, and the municipalities of Kosova Hora and Petrovice. It further illustrates a family tree of the Lurie family from Petrovice, an inventory list of goods from Lurie?s shop in Petrovice and, last but no least, photos of some Jews living in the district of Sedlcany in 1940.

Kolaborační proud protektorátního prezidenta Emila Háchy / Collaboration movement of the Protectorate president Emil Hácha

Šafr, Jakub January 2013 (has links)
This thesis deals with the conservatively authoritarian collaboration movement led by the so-called State President of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, Emil Hácha, who belongs to the controversial figures of our modern history. The thesis is concerned with Hácha's ideological orientation as a radical conservative and with the historicist concept of the Czech statehood as the two main bases of his approach to collaboration on whose grounds the policy of actual cooperation with the Nazi occupiers was realised. In connection with Hácha's specific type of collaboration, emphasis is placed on his negative relationship with the first independent Czechoslovak Republic and its liberal democratic regime, and, on the other hand, on his friendly relationship with the Greater German Reich and supra-state systems in general. In order to demonstrate the practice of E. Hácha's policies, attention is paid to the President's and his supporters' loyal pro-German speeches, activities of the organisations founded by Hácha -- Národní souručenství (National Community) and Český svaz pro spolupráci s Němci (Czech Union for Cooperation with Germans) -- and Hácha's attitude towards the Czech resistance movement. The thesis also depicts the change of Hácha's leading position in the autonomous administration of the Protectorate in connection with the Nazi intentions that were put into practice in the Czech area from his election to the end of the war. Another aim of the thesis, in order to assess in detail the form of the President's pro-German cooperation, is to compare Hácha's group with the Czech fascist movement, and the collaborating journalists around E. Moravec. The primary focus is on the ideological conflict and political struggle for power among the collaborative movements, their different attitudes to the German occupation administration, and their exploitability by Nazi policies in the Protectorate. The final part of the thesis deals with opinions of contemporary society on E. Hácha's Protectorate policies, including reactions of the resistance at home and abroad. On this basis, the post-war statements given by the representatives of Hácha's collaboration movement to the National Court in the process of "national cleansing" are compared with their actual activities during the time of the occupation. The thesis draws from archive materials, contemporary printed sources, and scholarly literature that covers the topic of collaboration in the Protectorate.

Essex under Cromwell: Security and Local Governance in the Interregnum

McConnell, James Robert 01 January 2012 (has links)
In 1655, Lord Protector Oliver Cromwell's Council of State commissioned a group of army officers for the purpose of "securing the peace of the commonwealth." Under the authority of the Instrument of Government, a written constitution not sanctioned by Parliament, the Council sent army major-generals into the counties to raise new horse militias and to support them financially with a tax on Royalists which the army officers would also collect. In counties such as Essex--the focus of this study--the major-generals were assisted in their work by small groups of commissioners, mostly local men "well-affected" to the Interregnum government. In addition to their militia and tax duties, the men were instructed to see to the implementation and furtherance of a variety of central government policies. Barely a year after its inception, a bill sanctioning the scheme was voted down in January 1657 by a Parliament unconvinced that the work done by the major-generals was in the best interests of the nation. This thesis examines the development and inception of the major-generals initiative by the Council of State, the work the major-generals and their commissioners engaged in, and the nature and cause of the reaction to their efforts in the shires. In the years and centuries following the Stuart Restoration, the major-generals were frequently portrayed as agents of Cromwellian tyranny, and more recently scholars have argued that the officers were primarily concerned with the promulgation of a godly reformation. This study looks at the aims and work of the major-generals largely through an analysis of state papers and Essex administrative records, and it concludes that the Council and officers were preoccupied more with threats to order and stability than with morals. Additionally, by examining the court records and work of the justices of the peace in Essex, this study shows that in regard to improving order the major-generals' work was unremarkable for its efficacy and but little different than previous law- and statute-enforcement activity traditionally carried out by local administrators. Based on this assessment of the major-generals' efforts to improve order as both limited and completely un-revolutionary, this thesis argues that the strongly negative reaction to the major-generals by the parliamentary class was due more to the officers' and government's encroachment on gentry power and local privilege than either the abrogation of the liberties of the people or any modest efforts to foist godliness on the shires. Religion was a major issue during the English Civil Wars, but the demise of one of the Interregnum government's most ambitious attempts to improve security in the localities was rooted not in sectarian distempers but rather in the gentry's preoccupation with keeping central government from meddling in local matters or taxing anyone in their class without parliamentary approval.
