Initial performance studies of the Forward GEM Tracker

Stowe, Malorie 15 December 2012 (has links)
The spin of the proton is thought to be produced by several constituents including quarks, antiquarks, and gluons. It has been the goal of the spin physics program at RHIC (Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider) to measure the contribution from gluons and various sea quarks to the proton spin. The Forward GEM Tracker (FGT) is a detector in STAR (Solenoidal Tracker at RHIC), which is one of two large experiments and is located at the RHIC collider at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The FGT serves to locate the position of forward-going charged particles, and it will be instrumental in observing the trajectories of decay leptons from W bosons, created by the interaction of the quark of one proton and the antiquark of another in a proton-proton collision. This position information will be helpful in determining the contribution of the quarks and antiquarks to the spin of the proton. This analysis investigates the initial performance of the FGT. Studies were conducted using cosmic-ray test data collected during the detector’s construction and more recent data from polarized-proton collisions within STAR. The goals of these studies were: to see if the detector works, see how well it works, check for any odd behavior, and optimize the performance of the detector. / Department of Physics and Astronomy

A Search for Heavy Resonances Decaying to HH → bb̄bb̄ with the ATLAS Detector

Emerman, Alexander Zack January 2021 (has links)
A search for Higgs boson pairs produced in the decay of high mass exotic resonances is presented. The search uses the bb̄bb̄ final state, analyzing 139 fb⁻¹ of proton–proton collision data at √s = 13 TeV collected with the ATLAS detector. Spin-0 and spin-2 benchmark signal models are considered and no significant deviation from the Standard Model prediction is observed. The search is combined with a complementary analysis for lower mass resonances to set upper limits on the production cross-section times HH branching ratio of new resonances in the mass range of 251 GeV to 5 TeV. In addition, the methodology for the in-situ calibration of a novel double-b-tagging algorithm (Xbb2020) using gluon to bb̄ decays is presented. Preliminary scale factors for Monte-Carlo simulation are computed using 139 fb⁻¹ of √s = 13 TeV pp collision data collected with the ATLAS detector. The completed calibration will allow the Xbb2020 algorithm to be used in future ATLAS searches for H → bb̄ decays.

Catching Some Z's: A Search for Three Massive Vector Boson Production at the LHC

Williams, Daniel Mays January 2024 (has links)
A search for the production of three massive vector bosons with at least one Z boson is presented. 140 fb⁻¹ of pp collisions at center-of-mass energy sqrt(s) = 13 TeV collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC from 2015 to 2018 are analyzed. Events with three leptons and at least one reconstructed jet are discussed, targeting the WWZ → lνqqll and WZZ → lνqqll decay channels. Evidence for the searched-for production process is observed. Additional results demonstrating the combination of the three lepton search with searches including four or more leptons are shown. Pending the unblinding and combination of these results, there is potential for the discovery of the searched-for production process.

In this work CORSIKA program was used to generate events from proton-proton collision and extensive air showers with primary particle being proton or iron. The hadronic interaction models used was EPOS LHC, QGSJET 01c, QGSJET II-4 and SIBYLL 2,1. The p-p collisions were simulated with energy equal to 7 TeV in the center of momenta reference system and the charged hadron multiplicity and the pseudorapidity density was studied. Comparing this with data collected by the CMS detector at the LHC it was chosen the best models to generate air showers. The extensive air showers were generated with primary particle energy equal to 1019 eV in the laboratory frame. It was observed the muon density in the altitude of the Surface Detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory. The objective is to study the possibility of using this density to probe the model and the primary particle of the events detected by the Pierre Auger Observatory / Mestrado / Física / Mestre em Física

In this work we present a very preliminary study of the diffractive production of mesons D* from proton-proton collisions, at center of mass energy of 7 TeV, with the CMS-LHC experiment. The decay channel where D*->D0 + pion (slow) ->K+pion was reconstructed and the efficiency was computed. An analysis of the dependence of the kinematical variables, particularly of the pseudo rapidity gap Δη, on the meson production was done. A total luminosity of 3.171pb^(-1) of data collected in the year of 2010 was analyzed, and the reconstructed data were compared to the ones obtained with PYTHIA6, PYTHIA8 and POMPYT generators.
