Parenting interventions on a Mother and Baby Unit : an investigationButler, Hannah Lisa January 2013 (has links)
In this thesis the intricacies of service user and staff perceptions of psychological interventions for mental health difficulties were explored. Expanding upon this theme, mothers and staff on a Mother and Baby Unit (MBU) were asked about their views regarding the acceptability and feasibility of the implementation of a parenting intervention, Baby Triple P Positive Parenting Programme (Baby TP). This investigation is presented as four papers: a literature review, two empirical papers (a & b) and, a critical review and personal reflection of the research process. The literature review, a meta-synthesis of qualitative studies, explores service user and staff perceptions of psychological interventions for mental health difficulties. Twenty-eight studies were synthesised to develop comprehensive understanding of subtle, specific and overlapping elements involved in the implementation of psychological intervention. Guided by Noblit and Hare’s (1988) approach, 11 over-arching themes and 25 sub-ordinate themes emerged from the synthesis. Findings provide a detailed description of the concepts pertinent to both service users and staff. Implications are identified for service managers and clinicians in obtaining optimum efficiency and outcomes of psychological intervention. The empirical study is a Q-methodological investigation into service user and staff perceptions of the acceptability and feasibility of a parenting intervention, Baby TP, on a MBU. This study is split into two population-specific papers. Overall five main factors were identified (service users: three; staff: two), which provides new insights into the acceptable and feasible elements of a parenting intervention within this specialist setting. The findings highlight a positive consensus as to the acceptability and feasibility of Baby TP in a MBU setting alongside a number of identified needs pertinent to service users, staff and the setting. Clinical implications and recommendations are provided to address identified areas of need for both populations within this setting. The third paper is a critical review of the thesis illustrated through personal reflections of the research process.

The use of Gestalt therapy as an alternative assessment technique with primary school girls who have been sexually abusedOelofsen, Melanie 23 July 2008 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to explore and describe the use of Gestalt therapy as an alternative assessment technique with two primary school girls who have been sexually abused. The empirical study of limited extent, was qualitative in nature and conducted from the interpretivist paradigm. I used two indepth clinical case studies situated within the context of psychotherapy outcome research as research design. I developed and implemented alternative assessment based on Gestalt therapy and employed observation, interviews, informal discussions, analysis of documentation, a reflective diary, field notes and visual data (photographs and original media) as data collection and documentation methods. I purposefully selected two primary school girls who have been sexually abused as participants in the study. The findings of the study were, firstly, that Gestalt therapy could be used as an effective alternative assessment technique with the target participants as it seemingly provided a safe setting to express emotions, fears and needs related to the trauma of sexual abuse. In this regard, a finding was that the primary participants had to deal with challenging emotions including anxiety, fear, aggression, anger, hatred, rage, sadness and depression. A related finding was that they experienced a need for love, unconditional acceptance, support and protection. Similarly, the study found that they also displayed negative behaviour such as inadequate social behaviour, restlessness and withdrawal from challenging social situations. Most importantly, utilising this mode of assessment rendered insight into the defence mechanisms they employed such as denial, avoidance, suppression and escapism. Secondly, alternative assessments based on Gestalt therapy seemed to have a positive effect on both participants, as indicated by change during and after the process of assessment in terms of emotions, behaviour and the use of defence mechanisms. / Dissertation (MEd (Educational Psychology))--University of Pretoria, 2008. / Curriculum Studies / unrestricted

Previous issue date: 2001-06-04 / The objective of this research is to demonstrate that psychological intervention during the first psychotic crisis can sinificantly help the therapist in his clinical work. The Case Study, object of this research, entitled The Isadora Clinical Case , was inspired by our clinical psychotherapeutic work with a young patient. During this clinical psychoterapeutic process we discovered the importance of the psychological intervention, when the psychotic patient, in her first crisis, receives psychological help simultaneously with the psychiatric treatment. Utilizing the strategy of the psychological intervention right from the first psychotic crisis, it was possible to minimize its desasterous effects on the patient s personality. The implementation of this research was possible due to the patient narratives during psychotherapeutic sessions, as well from everything she wrote about her dreams and her delirius. We collected the data that seemed most important and, from this clinical material, we proceeded with a psychoanalytic reading, using as theoretical reference Freud s doutrine and the comments of some of Lacan s disciples. We hope that this research will show how the psychotic patient, after psychological intervention, becomes less resistent to the psychotherapeutic process, which will help to rebuild his inner world, in more favorable conditions, having improved his defense system, his capacity to relate to reality, and also, with the persons that form his surrouding world that he tries to live with / O objetivo de nossa pesquisa é demonstrar que a intervenção psicológica durante o desencadeamento da primeira crise psicótica, pode ajudar de modo muito significativo, o terapeuta no seu trabalho clínico.

This diploma thesis is devoted to the issue of education of children and pupils with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in the Kladno region. In its theoretical part, it reveals the history of the study of this serious disability, describes the manifestations of behavior in individual diagnoses in the field of communication, socialization, social interaction, speech development, imagination, play. It briefly introduces the issue of diagnostics and multilateral interventions. The practical part is devoted to a qualitative survey, which aims to describe how the education, pedagogical, psychological and social intervention, goes in specific cases in Kladno region. Three case studies of boys aged 13, 14 and 17 show how they face their health problems, their educational difficulties, what types of schools they are educated at, what they have achieved. They see their future in a simplistic and sometimes naive way, yet it can be concluded that they want to work somewhere, to be independent and self-sufficient. Interviews with three pedagogical staff are processed into a coherent text. 2 teaching assistants and one class teacher mention some aspects of their work in relation to pupils with ASD related to behavior and learning. Exploring the use of sandplay psychotherapy in overcoming a language barrier whilst supporting a young vulnerable childKukard, Claude 26 October 2007 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to explore the use of sandplay psychotherapy, as intervention technique, in overcoming a language barrier, whilst supporting a young vulnerable child emotionally. An empirical study of limited extent was undertaken, which was qualitative by nature and conducted from the interpretivist paradigm. An in-depth case study was used as research design, whilst educational psychological assessment, intervention and re-assessment, observation, interviews, analysis of documentation, field notes and visual data (photographs) were employed as data collection methods. A young Sotho-speaking girl, who resides in an institution for children who are infected with and affected by HIV&AIDS, who had been made vulnerable by various circumstances (death of primary caregivers, emotional difficulties, and being infected with HIV&AIDS), was selected as the primary participant in the study. The findings of the empirical study are supported by relevant literature with regard to the main concepts guiding the study, namely, sandplay psychotherapy, vulnerable children, and language barriers. The findings were, firstly, that sandplay psychotherapy supported the primary participant emotionally, and, secondly, sandplay psychotherapy was an effective technique for overcoming a language barrier. A further finding was that the emotional healing that appeared to take place had a positive effect on the relationships and communication skills of the primary participant. / Dissertation (MEd (Educational Psychology))--University of Pretoria, 2006. / Educational Psychology / MEd / unrestricted

[pt] O PAPEL DA RUMINAÇÃO NA AGRESSIVIDADE EM VÍTIMAS DE MAUS-TRATOS INFANTIS / [en] THE ROLE OF RUMINATION IN AGGRESSION IN VICTIMS OF CHILD MALTREATMENTFERNANDA ALVES FONSECA 21 March 2024 (has links)
Considerando a
[en] Rumination is a type of repetitive thinking, characterized by a focus on
symptoms and their possible consequences. This pattern of thinking is related to
several harmful consequences for the individual s life. Considering the relevance of
these impairments, the aim of this dissertation was to investigate this construct in
relation to other variables, and to evaluate the forms of treatment that are already
being used to reduce ruminative thoughts. To this en aggressiveness in victims of
child maltreatment. Article 1 describes this research, and the results point to the
occurrence of child maltreatment as predictors of rumination and aggression in
adulthood, while rumination also appears as a predictor of aggressiveness. These data
show the negative impact of rumination, which indicates the need for interventions
capable of reducing these thoughts. In this context, article 2 comprised a systematic
review and a meta-analysis with randomized clinical trials that assessed
psychological interventions to reduce rumination in a sample of children and
adolescents. The results indicate, in general, the effectiveness of the interventions,
but point out some limitations. Therefore, future studies should seek to improve
treatment protocols focused on rumination.

Previous issue date: 2006-02-10 / The research aimed to understand psychologically mother s and couples experiences in a process of Genetic Counseling (CG) on the Perinatal Genetic Ambulatory of CAISM/ UNICAMP after the birth of a child with Neural Tube Defect compatible or not with surviving with the purpose of planning specific actions regarding the attention to mental health in that context. Ten participants were selected among the population of mothers and couples attended during the period from March, 2003 to February, 2004, based on the richness and how representative were the psychological experiences reported. The research descriptive and with an exploratory feature was developed based on the phenomenological method. It began with the researcher s insertion on the studied context as a trainee. Observations were made during the GC consultations and, in a posterior moment, interviews with the participants were conducted, stimulated by some starting questions, in two moments: immediately after the GC and about six months later. The reports, transformed in Narratives, brought elements of the parents psychological experiences both in regard to the malformed children s death and surviving, as well as meaningful interpersonal relationships with relatives, friends and medical staff. The malformation diagnosis, the decisions derived by it and the contact with the baby dead or alive was a painful experience to mothers and couples. The emphasis, however, was given to the mothers experiences because of the considerable personal transformation caused by the existence of a malformed child. All the women participants in the research experienced motherhood even those whose babies didn t survive or the ones who proceeded with early pregnancy interruption given to their babies the status of sons. The surviving of the malformed child altered essentially mother s lives and their plans about the future because demanded intensive care and dedication, many times in detriment of their own needs. In this way, although reporting certain surpass about the initial suffering, they started to live in accord to the child s progresses. Differently, but without less suffering, the mothers whose babies passed way seemed to be able to surpass part of the suffering, dealing with the emptiness derived from the suspension of the exercise of their mother capacity trough the retake of ordinary activities and plans for the future, as they recovered psychologically. Even having the parents limitations for the comprehension of the orientations they received at the GC, it was experienced positively, both in regard to the contact they had with the staff and by the fact it had become an opportunity for relieving guilt, demystification of fantasies about the origins of the pathology and better comprehension of the problem. The possibility of the researcher s insertion on the service added to the study an ethnographic feature that leaded to a wider psychological comprehension about the studied question, making possible the reflection regarding the proper institutional psychological attention to the context and phenomena on focus, generating some strategies of intervention.

Previous issue date: 2015-02-10 / This research aimed to apprehend and interpret the experience of psychologists who have worked in several contexts considered extreme situations, including those designated as abrupt - environmental disasters and plane crashes - and as chronic - armed conflicts, post-war and epidemics. The investigation was characterized as an exploratory qualitative research of phenomenological inspiration. Individual encounters with nine psychologists ocurred from April to September of 2013. As a strategy for the participants experience based on the researcher's impressions. A narrative-synthesis emerged from all the individual narratives pointing to interpretative elements relatd to the studied phenomenon: (1) being exposed to constant threats to the their physical and psychological integrity and living with risk becomes an inherent part of this professional practice; (2) belonging to an organization that manages the team's actions allows a certain structure for their interventions and also offers support and care to the professionals; (3) psychological care develops in harmony eith the specificities and demands of the situation, developing from attitudes of empathy and acceptance, as well as from the authenticity of the psychologist himself; (4) psychologists revealed feelings of sefrealization as a result of participating in extreme situations, and a desire to remain in a state of readiness for action. (5) working in extreme situations is a fertile and peculiar opportunity of learning. These results revealed the meaning of the psychological practice in extreme situations as human gesture of casting oneself in the direction of others as a mission to care for and facilitate the clinical situation.

Previous issue date: 2017-02-07 / Conselho Nacional de Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento Cient?fico e Tecnol?gico - CNPq / This qualitative research study, of exploratory nature, aimed to describe and phenomenologically comprehend psychologists? experience of working in multidisciplinary teams at hospital. Nine psychologists, who work in three different large cities of the State of S?o Paulo, participated in the study, eight women and one man. The researcher invited each one of them for a dialogical encounter. Following each encounter, the researcher wrote a comprehensive narrative containing the main elements, which emerged from the participants? lived experience, apprehended by the researcher through an intersubjective movement. After this, the researcher created a synthesis narrative, presenting some significant elements of participants? lived experience as a whole. From this synthesis narrative, it was possible to describe the structure of the experience in focus in the study. It was concluded that: 1) the multidisciplinary team doesn?t always recognize the importance of the psychologist?s presence in the team, which requires him to break barriers; 2) there is a daily overload of demands on the psychologist due to the team member?s and institution?s manager?s incomprehension about his role; 3) the psychologist tries to contribute to the team?s care to patients in order to fulfill Brazilian?s unified health system principle of integral care; 4) attitudes such as empathic comprehension and unconditional positive regard characterize psychologist?s role towards patients, their relatives and team members; 5) a trustful and complicity relationship among multidisciplinary teams? diverse specialists is crucial to certify a well-functioning team; 6) due to the service?s demands, the psychologist feels the need to take care of himself, emotionally, in order to be able to effectively perform his role in the team; and 7) a well qualified Psychology under graduation training, as well as a major in Hospital Psychology, are pointed as necessary for a proficient practice within a hospital multidisciplinary team.

A study of psychological intervention strategies used by national soccer coaches for male teams in South AfricaXoxo, Thabo Daniel January 2013 (has links)
The purpose of the current study was to examine the Psychological Intervention Strategies (PIS) that are used by coaches for male soccer teams in South Africa to enhance the performance of the national soccer teams. National soccer coaches for male teams (n = 4) completed a questionnaire and attended in-depth interview. Results from both the questionnaire and in-depth interview revealed a lack of knowledge of PIS which was further supported by the data from the analysis. While some of the coaches did not utilise goal setting and relaxation in their coaching responsibilities, the current results further show that these soccer coaches do not utilise mental imagery as well. These results suggest that the SAFA soccer coaches could not integrate PIS in the coaching. Although the results cannot be generalised there is evidence that the SAFA trained soccer coaches demonstrate inadequacy in using PIS in their soccer coaching. The study finds that soccer coaches are psychologically under-prepared for their arduous task of soccer coaching. By implication the players are also mentally under-prepared that they cannot face their peers competitively. Current studies point to this psychological preparedness as the psychological momentum.
