Architecture and urbanism in Henri IV's Paris : the Place Royale, Place Dauphine, and Hôpital St. Louis / Henri IV's Paris, Architecture and urbanism in

Ballon, Hilary Meg January 1985 (has links)
Thesis (Ph. D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 1985. / MICROFICHE COPY AVAILABLE IN ARCHIVES AND ROTCH. / Includes bibliographical references (v. 2, leaves 348-379). / This dissertation concerns the extensive building program which Henri IV undertook in Paris from 1600 to 1610. Focusing on the place Royale (now called the place des Vosges) , the place Dauphine, rue Dauphine, and Pont Neuf, and the hôpital St. Louis, this study holds that Henri IV's urbanism was guided by an emerging view of the city as a unified entity. Drawing from newly uncovered notarial documents, the dissertation examines the form and the function of the monuments and argues that each building was embedded in its physical context, engaged in the life of the city, and informed by an underlying urban vision . First, the buildings were not autonomous geometric forms dropped into open spaces; they were conceived as parts of a larger urban composition, structured by axes which linked the monuments to major roads without however diminishing the quality of spatial enclosure which the designs also promoted. Second, the squares and the hospital were each charged with a program anchored in the commercial, social, and sanitary life of the city. The place Royale and place Dauphine were planned as residential and commercial squares to stimulate trade and manufacturing while the hôpital St. Louis was intended to minimize the convulsive effect of the plague on the city. Finally, the dissertation argues that the royal building program was not merely a sequence of unrelated improvements and isolated adornments, but rather a series of coordinated efforts to impose a unifying order on the city. The monuments were assigned functions which addressed the city as a whole . They were physically linked to more distant parts of the city, and they were composed to create grand urban vistas. The urban fabric was no long e r conceived as an accumulation of fragments contained within the walls; it was understood as a cohesive network with its own internal order. / by Hilary Meg Ballon. / Ph.D.

Urban Fabric as a Calayst for Architectural Awareness: Center for Architectural Research

Wilhelm, Bernard C 18 November 2008 (has links)
Architects throughout have been forced to practice design surrounded by a society that generally lacks of architectural awareness and interest. A growing trend to transition from a relatively isolated profession into a field that promotes stronger public involvement is critical for architecture to evolve. Within the past 10 years, the growth of architectural centers have begun to dissolve the barrier between the profession and the general public in that their primary function regardless of what form they represent, is to introduce and educate issues of architecture that are an inescapable part of our built environment. An investigation of architectural research institute precedents, would allow for opportunities to understand how they have engaged professional knowledge with a growing educated public opinion. Promoting the idea of similar functions locally to a skeptic public has to be based on the importance of change, where new technologies are consistently transforming the way we approach design problems. Introducing a variety of techniques to display information, which go beyond any two dimensional format into a three or four dimensional, more tactile, interactive medium, allowing the observer to become engaged in what they are learning is important for individuals to establish meaning. The facility itself would be a catalyst for learning in which design issues are presented and solutions are viewed by the viewer in a multi-sensory way. The ultimate goal would be able to establish a system of memory responses to allow the general public a better connection with architecture. Creating a center of information housed within a singular building would be a beneficial beginning but it is important to express that information beyond any static building into a contextual environment in which it can be further related with. Adding richness to public spaces that promote cases of good architectural design can be an example that would allow the absorption of concepts through participation. Eventually, the results would lead to more knowledgeable public input about how their built environment is viewed and encourage better design.

The design of a civic building in Mamelodi

Taljaard, Stehan. January 2012 (has links)
Thesis (MTech. degree in Architecture (Professional))--Tshwane University of Technology, 2012. / The location of Mamelodi in close approximate to new developments of the eastern part of Tshwane makes Mamelodi a very attractive place for persons from rural areas seeking a better life. Although this area formally designated as a 'black townships', public infrastructure and community services do exists but access to certain civic and educational services are restricted. The proposed intervention aims to provide the community with access to the currently inaccessible civic and educational services by the introduction of a new Mamelodi East Thusong Service Centre and Information Resource Centre at the existing Pienaarspoort Railway Station in Mamelodi East. The proposed intervention acknowledges public space in an African context; the market street as public space typology and the informal trader as urban and architectural client by providing facilities required for a self-sustaining community. The activity driven intervention aims to evoke a sense of belonging to its user by establishing a dynamic, meaningful and unifying experience. A place where public space becomes the foreground and buildings serves as a mere backdrop for human activity.

The design of an agricultural market centre at Eerste Fabrieke Station, Mamelodi.

Jooste, Melanie. January 2011 (has links)
Thesis (MTech. degree in Architecture)--Tshwane University of Technology, 2011. / The brief calls for a building that will provide facilities for the local community to wash, pack, and trade fresh produce which has either been grown in their backyards or in community gardens. The development should also provide facilities where the public can be educated in agriculture, communication, and business skills. The programme should incorporate a community hall together with facilities for social workers and government officials. Additional office space should be included for small businesses. The development should also provide facilities to empower the local community through education, and the opportunity to convert fresh produce into an economical benefit.
