New Future Internet approaches targeting Information Centric Networking, such as the Entity Title Architecture (ETArch), provide new services and optimizations for these scenarios, using novel mechanisms leveraging the Software Defined Networking (SDN) concept. However, ETArch approach is equivalent to the Best Effort capability of current Internet, which limits achieving reliable communications. In this work, ETArch was evolved with both quality-oriented mobility and resilience functions following the over-provisioning paradigm to achieve advanced network resource allocation integrated with OpenFlow. The resulting framework, called Support of Mobile Sessions with High Transport Network Resource Demand (SMART), allows the network to semantically define the quality requirements of each session to drive network Quality of Service control seeking to keep best Quality of Experience. The SMART evaluation in both data and control plane was carried out using a real testbed of the OFELIA Brazilian island, showing that its quality-oriented network functions allowed supporting bandwidth-intensive multimedia applications with high QoS and QoE over time through a signalling restricted scheme in comparison with the legacy ETArch

Multi-Criteria Optimization of Content Delivery within the Future Media Internet / Optimisation Multi-Critères pour la Diffusion Vidéo au sein de l’Internet Media du Futur

Bruneau-Queyreix, Joachim 21 November 2017 (has links)
Single-source HTTP Adaptive Streaming solutions (HAS) have become the de-facto solutions to deliver video over the Internet mostly due to their capabilities to increase end-user’s Quality of Experience (QoE) as well as their ease of deployment due to the usage of the HTTP protocol. Although HAS solutions can increase QoE by trading off the delivered video quality to minimize the number of video freezing events, they are limited by the bandwidth available on the considered communication channel between the client and the server. This thesis exposes our contributions in building lightweight pragmatic and evolving solutions advocating for the simultaneous usage of multiple sources with heterogeneous capacities so as to achieve high QoE content delivery at low cost. The first contribution of this work presents a streaming solution extending HAS capabilities to a pragmatic multi-server technique: MS-Stream. MS-Stream provides the means to exploit expanded bandwidth and link diversity in distributed heterogeneous network infrastructures. In our second contribution, we propose MATHIAS, a client-side two-phase consumption and adaptation algorithm implemented into MSStream. MATHIAS aims at increasing the end-user’s perceived streaming quality while utilizing the most of the heterogeneous capacities offered at the service and network environments. Finally, we further extend the QoE and scalability capabilities of MS-Stream and MATHIAS by leveraging on clients’ connectivity capacities and we expose our third contribution: a hybrid P2P/Multi-server live-Streaming system (PMS) incorporating distributed quality and scalability adaptation mechanisms.

The Impact of Waiting Time Distributions on QoE of Task-Based Web Browsing Sessions / Påverkan av väntetiden distributioner på QoE av Task-Based Web webbläsning

Islam, Nazrul, Elepe, Vijaya John David January 2014 (has links)
There has been an enormous growth in the Internet usage in recent years, fueled by the increasing number of multimedia applications and widespread availability of World Wide Web (WWW). The end-user generally accesses these applications through web browsing activities. These time-critical services often suffer from the delays ranging from small chunks to long peaks which can have severe implications on the Quality of Experience (QoE). Hence, it is worthwhile to identify the impact of different variations of delay on the end-user QoE. This research focused on the end-user QoE for three different distributions of delays occurring during an e-commerce shopping experiment. By keeping the overall waiting time of every sessions same, the study shows that the end-user QoE is different for different variety of delays. And the research also concludes that, the users prefer small frequently occurring delays as compared to the long rarely occurring delays within a task-driven web browsing session.

Smart Client-Server Protocol and Architecture for Adaptive Multimedia Streaming

Abdullah, Miran Taha 04 June 2018 (has links)
In recent years, multimedia services consumption has increased and it is expected that this trend will continue in the near future, becoming the evaluation of Quality of Experience (QoE) as a very important issue for assessing the quality of providers' services. In this sense, the optimization of the QoE is progressively receiving much attention considering that current solutions are not based on the adaptation, feasibility, cost-effectiveness, and reliability. The present dissertation is focused on the characterization, design, development and evaluation of different multimedia applications aimed to optimize the QoE. Therefore, this work investigates the influence that the networks infrastructure, the videos' characteristics and the users' terminals present on QoE of the current Internet multimedia services. The work is based on a comprehensive research of subjective and objective assessments in heterogeneous networks. Challenges and research questions related to the state of the art are discussed in this dissertation. In the first phase of this dissertation, we design a test methodology for assessing QoE of live video streaming and video on demand platforms to be transmitted over Wi-Fi and cellular networks. From this initial step, we will propound the related research issues and questions to solve this dissertation. Our methodology considers the use of subjective and objective metrics to evaluate the QoE perceived by end-users. A set of laboratory experiments is conducted where our proposed methodology is applied. The obtained results are gathered and analyzed to extract the relations between Quality of Service (QoS) and QoE. From the results, we propose a QoS-QoE mapping which allows predicting QoE. In the next phase of the research, we develop QoE-optimization algorithms based on network system management for Wi-Fi and cellular networks. The algorithms use the key parameters that were taken into account for QoE assessment. The goal of these algorithms is to provide a flexible management system for the networks in order to achieve the desirable trade-off between QoE maximization and resource usage efficiency. Lastly, the system testbed is designed in order to evaluate the performance of generic multimedia services applications for the different environments under test. The system testbed is based on virtualization approach; it uses the shared resources of a physical hardware to virtualize all components. The virtualized testbed provides virtualized network functions for the different scenarios such as the Internet (Content Delivery Networks - CDNs) and wireless networks. Therefore, lightweight protocols and agile mechanisms are adopted in the system to provide enhanced service to end-users. The QoE results are reported to the service providers according to the parameters defined in the evaluation process. As a result, we have obtained a cost-effective system, which is considered as a feasible way for test evaluation.

Kurze, Albrecht 03 June 2016 (has links)
The thesis is centered on the relationship of Quality of Service (QoS) and Quality of Experience (QoE) for mobile Internet services. While QoS covers the technical view on the telecommunications network characterized by performance-related parameter values (e.g. throughput and latency), QoE refers to the assessment of the user experience (e.g. satisfaction and acceptability) in the use of the services. In the thesis QoS and QoE are revealed as highly complex and related concepts in theoretical contemplation. Integrating both concepts requires a multidisciplinary or interdisciplinary approach between engineering and human sciences to consider both - technological aspects of the network as well the human user. The designed multilayered model appropriately integrates the technical network view as well as the user's perspective by considering all relevant factors of influence and all internal relationships between QoS and QoE. The conducted extensive psychophysical laboratory experiment with real users, devices and services quantifies the relationship between specific QoS values and specific QoE values. A testbed developed for network emulation allows combining typical mobile network situations with typical usage situations in a controlled and focused manner. The three elaborated principles to test for relevance, suitability and efficiency take into account the special features of the test setup and test design. Test results gained from more than 200 volunteers confirm the predicted QoS-QoE-characteristics of the six tested mobile services to be either elastic or non-elastic. It is possible to conclude from the desired degree of user satisfaction on the necessary values of the QoS network parameters, which results in a QoS-QoE-corridor between lower and upper threshold values. Findings prove that QoS-independent factors, e.g. the type of presentation of the stimuli in the app on the user’s device, can be as relevant for QoE as the evaluated QoS network parameters themselves.

Improvement of network-based QoE estimation for TCP based streaming services

Knoll, Thomas Martin, Eckert, Marcus 12 November 2015 (has links) (PDF)
Progressive download video services, such as YouTube and podcasts, are responsible for a major part of the transmitted data volume in the Internet and it is expected, that they will also strongly affect mobile networks. Streaming video quality mainly depends on the sustainable throughput achieved during transmission. To ensure acceptable video quality in mobile networks (with limited capacity resources) the perceived quality by the customer (QoE) needs to be monitored by estimation. For that, the streaming video quality needs to be measured and monitored permanently. For TCP based progressive download we propose to extract the the video timestamps which are encoded within the payload of the TCP segments by decoding the video within the payload. The actual estimation is then done by play out buffer fill level calculations based on the TCP segment timestamp and their internal play out timestamp. The perceived quality for the user is derived from the number and duration of video stalls. Algorithms for decoding Flash Video, MP4 and WebM Video have already been implemented. After deriving the play out time it is compared to the timestamp of the respective TCP segment. The result of this comparison is an estimate of the fill level of the play out buffer in terms of play out time within the client. This estimation is done without access to the end device. The same measurement procedure can be applied for any TCP based progressive download Internet service. Video was simply taken as an example because of its current large share in traffic volume in operator networks.

Demo on Network-based QoE measurement for Video streaming services

Knoll, Thomas Martin, Eckert, Marcus 12 November 2015 (has links) (PDF)
Progressive download video services, such as YouTube, are responsible for a major part of the transmitted data volume in the Internet and it is expected, that they also will strongly affect mobile networks. Streaming video quality mainly depends on the sustainable throughput achieved during transmission. In order to achieve an acceptable video quality in mobile networks (with limited capacity resources), traffic engineering mechanisms have to be applied. For that, the streaming video quality needs to be measured and monitored permanently. Therefore, the video timestamps which are encoded within the payload of the TCP segments have to be extracted. For that it is necessary to decode the video within the transported payload. Algorithms for decoding Flash Video, MP4 and WebM Video have already been implemented as a demonstration implementation in support of the network based measurement contribution to SG12 by Chemnitz University for TCP encoded progressive download Internet services. In the demonstration, the derived play out buffering from the monitored traffic is being output internally. A second application is then used to graphically display the estimation result. The measurement and estimation is solely done within a measurement point of an operator network without access to the client’s end device.

This thesis presents various contributions in display retargeting under the vast field of High Dynamic Range (HDR) imaging. The motivation towards this work is the conviction that by preserving artistic intent and considering insights from human visual system leads to aesthetic, comfortable and efficient display retargeting.

Improving quality of experience in multimedia streaming by leveraging Information-Centric Networking / Améliorer la qualité d'expérience du streaming multimédia en tirant parti des réseaux centrés sur l'information

Samain, Jacques 19 March 2019 (has links)
Information-Centric Networking (ICN) is a promising architecture to address today Internet multimedia traffic explosion and increasing user mobility: not only to enhance the user’s quality of experience, but also to naturally and seamlessly extend video sup- port deeper in the network functions. However, to the best of our knowledge, a thorough assessment of the benefits brought by ICN to multimedia delivery has not been done yet. In this thesis, we aim at reducing the gap to such assessment, by considering ICN in various multimedia delivery scenarios.First, we assess the benefits brought by an ICN-based Dynamic Adaptive Streaming (DAS) compared to TCP/IP based streaming, by means of an experimental campaign that includes multiple channels (e.g., emulated Wi-Fi and LTE, real 3G/4G traces), multiple clients (homogeneous vs heterogeneous mixture, synchronous vs asynchronous arrivals) and carefully selected DAS adaptation logics to cover the broad families of available adaptation algorithms. We also warn about potential pitfalls that are nonethelesseasily avoidable.Second, we show how network assistance helps im- proving the users’ quality of experience. To do so, we leverage the in-network caching feature of ICN and propose a simple periodical network signal from the cache (i.e., per-quality hit ratio) to be exploited by DAS adaptation logic to enhance further the user’s quality of experience by avoiding the known cache-induced quality oscillations. We confirm the soundness of our approach through experiments. Finally, as live multimedia delivery is gaining momentum, we propose hICN-RTC by integrating hICN (hybrid ICN), an ICN-in-IP solution, to WebRTC and we design RICTP (Realtime Information Centric Trans- port Protocol), a content-aware transport that minimizes the communication latency. Although still in development, the results we gathered from early experiments are promising as they show that hICN-RTC scales with the number of active speakers rather than the total number of participants.
