Toward A Local Model Of Teacher Professional Development For Social-emotional Learning For Elementary Teachers Of Urban Minority Youth

January 2015 (has links)
There are few teacher trainings that focus on the development of social and emotional competencies for teachers (SECT) despite a large research base showing its relevance to teaching, learning, and academic success. Research suggests a major reason many current professional development (PD) models are not effective nor show utility to the immediate context of teachers is that they are externally developed and driven without consideration of the teachers’ voice. Further, they are not created to be context-specific. This study employs a qualitative, participatory action research design (PAR) to use the teachers’ perspectives at an urban elementary charter school to create a local model of professional development with the goal of enhancing social and emotional competencies of teachers. Findings reveal a local definition of PD, indicate the importance of considering macrosystemic policies, systems level policies and practices, and interpersonal supports as potential influences on SECT. / acase@tulane.edu

An Exploration of Pathological Gambling Among Diverse Populations

Perkins, Ayana N. 14 December 2011 (has links)
This study used an ecological perspective to identify pathological gambling (PG) risk and protective factors, nonclinical resources, and prevention strategies based on the perceptions of Georgia stakeholders. With an ecological perspective, human behavior is perceived as an outcome of the interaction between the individual and various factors in their social environment. The ecological perspective is especially suitable for examining the higher PG prevalence among ethnic minority groups since these populations have been documented as encountering greater exposure to PG social and environmental risk factors (Smedley & Syme, 2000). To assess prevention needs, data were obtained from a 2008 needs assessment where diverse perspectives were collected through semi structured focus groups and interviews. A qualitative approach was used to address the study's aims. Grounded theory was used to guide the data analysis. Findings indicated that community perceptions of risk and protective factors, nonclinical resources, and prevention strategies were present at multiple levels of analyses. Furthermore, data trends also indicated that charitable gambling and other social norms should be considered in prevention.

Obsah a struktura sexuálních fantazií mužů a žen / The Content and Structure of Sexual Fantasies of Men and Women

Boudová, Kamila January 2018 (has links)
Several researches have studied sexual fantasies (SF), and many studies have described the gender differences in frequency, content and incidence. However, most of these studies work in a quantitative way of analysis. The data are obtained from questionnaires containing reductive statements that can be interpreted differently by respondents. The results are sometimes very different across studies. In the present work we have therefore decided to use qualitative and quantitative method of analysis to study the content of SF of men and women and to describe the gender differences. For our research, we obtained data describing the most popular SFs (using a questionnaire with closed-end and open-end questions and also from a freely written favourite SF in the form of a film script by respondents) from a total of 407 women and 159. The sample was based on quotas created according to the data of the Czech Statistical Office (2011). The quotas selected an age-representative sample of 100 women and 100 men whose fantasies were analysed. In terms of qualitative analyses, we have described the following interesting categories regarding female SF: sexual activity occurring in SF; the importance of a submissive role for women; high preference in group activities. In male SF, a large variability of explicit...

Obchod s mramorem v pozdně antické Ravenně: archeologický materiál z komplexu San Severo / Ravennate Marble Trade in the Late Antiquity: Material from the San Severo Complex

Tůmová, Helena January 2013 (has links)
This thesis aims to study the commercial mechanism of Ravenna in the Late Antiquity from the point of view of the amount, type and provenance of the imported stone artefacts (fragments of architectural decoration, revetments slabs, opus sectile, sarcophagi), based on the study of archaeological material from the site of the basilica and the monastery of San Severo in Classe (Ravenna). Ravenna represented an important administrative and cultural center in the 5th and 6th century, connecting western and eastern artistic influences and focusing herself on trade and production. Determination of the stone artefacts from the San Severo locality was principally based on the archaeometric methods and on the combination of archaeologic and geologic approach as well. Specific archaeometric methods (macroscopic, geochemical and mineralogical-petrographic analyses) together with a quantitative evaluation were applied. Many scientific works, dedicated till this time to the art history of late antique Ravenna and dealing also the argument of ravennate "marbles" presumed the prevailing provenance from Proconnesos and usual commercial relations between Ravenna and Constantinople as well. Constantinople played a role of a mediator of oriental localities and Ravenna. The hypothesis concerning the provenance of the...
